2022 Ohio High School Playoffs

I found this article a bit amusing, complaining that a couple of locals lost out on the award. Basically complaining that once again the rest of the state has ignored the southwest corner of the state. Reminded me of the attitude I detected during my two years of grad school at UC.

Despite a pair of top-notch finalists from Ohio Division I and Division IV, the 2022 Mr. Football Award went north on Thursday to Akron Hoban running back and University of Buffalo commit Lamar Sperling.

Ohio Mr. Football goes to Hoban RB Lamar Sperling; why not Cincinnati

Some real shockers boys....

Last night
D2
Toledo Central Catholic 28 - Hoban 21
Wow.....wow. TCC roared to a 28-7 lead at half, Hoban made it 28-21 in the 3rd and that's where it stayed. All Mr. Ohio Lamar Sperling could do was get 40 carries for 356 yards and 3 TD's. Unfortunately their QB went 2-8 for -3 yards and gave up a pick 6.

Today
D5
Canfield South Range 53 - Ironton 27
Canfield South Range completes their 16-0 season....Ironton's QB went 21/36 for 325 and 4 TD's and South Range's was 13/25 for 331 and 3 TD's, so a much different vibe from yesterdays opener.

D3
Canfield 35 - Bloom-Carroll 21
Almost 7800 in attendance, great crowd...never was a close game as Canfield was always in control. More of your traditional smash mouth style game. Canfield taking home 2 state titles today!

Remaining schedule

Division I – Friday, 7:30 p.m.
No. 1 Lakewood St. Edward (14-1) vs. No. 4 Springfield (13-1)

Division VI – Saturday, 10:30 a.m.
No. 1 Maria Stein Marion Local (15-0) vs. No. 2 Kirtland (15-0)

Division VII – Saturday, 3 p.m.
No. 7 New Bremen (12-3) vs. No. 1 Warren John F. Kennedy (13-1)

Division IV – Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
No. 2 Cincinnati Wyoming (15-0) vs. No. 1 Cleveland Glenville (14-0)

Kinda bummed Kirtland and Marion Local don't get the spotlight tonight but I get it, D1 game gets the love.

St. Edward's 28 - Springfield 14

A valiant effort by Springfield, was a one score game going into the 4th before St. Ed's defense was able to suffocate the Wildcats. St. Ed's held Springfield to 1.3 YPC while getting 6.3 themselves, so a pretty lopsided game on the lines......Springfield was sacked 9 times. Honestly, they were lucky to only lose by 14.

A helluva job by Maurice Douglass though.....St. Ed's on the other hand defended their D1 title and 6th title since 2010.

Marion Local 14 - Kirtland 6

A very appropriate one score game between two teams coming in at 15-0....the Flyers gave up 9 points in their last 10 games, what more could you possibly say about that defense? Kirtland won every game before now by at least 3 scores.

This was a hard hitting game, this hit hurts to watch -

New Bremen 38 - Warren JFK 6

Well, not a hotly contested game but an incredible run by a 7 seed in New Bremen, that turned a 7-3 regular season into a 6-0 post season. New Bremen's RB had 243 yards on 25 carries for 4 TD's....amazing dominance in the whacky D7.

Glenville 26 - Wyoming 6

In my happiest update I've had since doing these for some years, Cleveland Glenville High School has not just won their first state title, but the first state title for any Cleveland public school. Ted Ginn Sr finally gets his title, the legendary coach and pipeline program near and dear to Ohio State's heart beat an absolutely fantastic Wyoming program that came in 15-0 and hadn't given up more than 20 all year. Glenville dominated this game, and players like Arvell Reese, Bryce West, Damarion Witten, D'Shawntae Jones, etc. finally bring it home!!
