2022 Ohio High School Playoffs

bigdog3300

The G.O.A.T.
The best time of year (other than the start of the high school season....when hope springs eternal) is officially underway.

This year, more than other years, feels like we have some clear cut favorites that have separated from the pack more so than the last few years.

Feel free to chime in with any predictions or game updates and any games you all plan on visiting!

I'll go more into the matchups for next week later in the week with some fun ones to keep an eye on, upset alerts, etc.

D1
Nothing registering more than a teeny tiny surprise came up this first weekend. Since nearly everyone in D1 gets in, week 1 of the playoffs is typically dull and this was no exception.

I think St. Ed's is the clear cut favorite, Moeller would be 2nd. Dark horse is Lakota West...they have some really high high's where they look like the best team and other weeks where they play down. Interestingly enough, they find themselves as the #3 seed in Region 4 while also being the only undefeated D1 team in the state. Weird.

D2
Much like D1, it was more ho hum than usual....until....Region 8 showed up (I can hear Region 8 yelling 'wild card bitches!' from afar). We had a 15 over a 2 with 3-7 Little Miami shocking 10-0 Xenia 27-24 in 2OT. Wow! Just last week Little Miami beat 0-10 Walnut Hills by 3 and now this week they beat 10-0 Xenia by 3. Unreal. Anderson as a 10 crushed Troy so we'll have a 10 seed hosting and we'll have a double digit in the regional semi's. Pretty dope.

This will be a very competitive division, especially Region 5, but Massillon and Hoban are the current favorites. That said - Hoban seems to be trending down, Massillon up....interesting side plot, Massillon....has never won a state title in the playoff area. 24 state titles before the playoffs, 9 AP titles, and in the playoff era they've had 3 runner-ups. Would be pretty cool to see such a storied program finally win one.

D3
The land where upsets are more common, and we saw them early with Kenston over University School for a 13 over a 4. In all fairness, Kenston is a fantastic team to be a 13, so it's not as cray cray as it seems. Then another 13 over a 4 with Defiance absolutely destroying Cloverleaf, 63-28. Also, Trotwood as an 11 took down a 6 in Chaminade Julienne.

Region 11/12 are both pretty loaded, if you had to pick a team though Badin has probably earned that right to be the D3 favorite right now.

D4
Oh there's that 13 over a 4 again, this time with Buchtel getting a 3 point win over Woodridge. Cambridge cruised as the 11 over the 6 Logan Elm, 31-13. Oh hey, look, another 13 over a 4! Is this the equivalent of 12/5 in March Madness? Clearly yes. Clinton-Massie goes over Unioto, 38-0....and that was a 9-1 Unioto. We also had Eaton, a 14, over a 3 in Bishop Fenwick, 31-28.

Glenville looks very tough this year, a throwback to some of their teams ten or so years prior. Wyoming will be right there too, and honestly I'd love to see those two defenses go at each other....low scoring, hard hitting type of high school title game we've all come to love.

D5
Goddamit another 13 over a 4, WHAT IS HAPPENING. Mooney with a 45-14 win over Edison. JESUS CHRIST IT'S JASON BOURNE or another 13 over a 4, now with Columbus Academy over Centerburg. Otherwise not much chaos.

I have no idea with D5. Ironton? Who knows.

D6
WHY LORD, WHY....13 West Jefferson 49, 4 Newcomerstown 14....Had a 12/5 upset with Twin Valley South over Williamsburg, 70-38....108 points, that seems like a lot.

I feel bad for Fort Frye, they are a legit title contender any other year, but this should be Kirtland vs. Marion Local, this should be THE prime time game slot. Marion Local has 8 shut outs in 11 games...including 5 in a row. They beat previously undefeated Coldwater 35-0 in the season finale. Kirtland plays up constantly, in fact they played D5 and up all year. First D6 game was this week...they are more ready than some will think.

D7
Always fun with chaos, we had a 12/5 upset with Delphos St. Johns over Arlington, 55-24. Oh, that was all the chaos. Wtf D7.

McComb should be pesky, but the top two to me are Newark Catholic and Ansonia and give me the more battle prepped Newark Catholic this year, one of the larger favorites IMO.

There were constant 10/7 upsets, which isn't much of an upset to me so I did not include.

There weren't many close calls with #1 seeds....Dublin Jerome only won 24-14 in their 1/16, they might have another win in them but I don't see anything more than that in R2 of D1.

Probably the first and only time Richmond Edison has ever been mentioned on BP. And it's for being 10-0 and losing to a 4-6 team.

Super tough draw for them, when you have schools like Mooney, Kenston, Clinton-Massie, it'll happen. But I love that those schools know they're gonna schedule to get ready for the playoffs and fall wherever they fall in the playoffs.

Are you a Richmond Edison grad?

I got to watch my North Royalton Bears hold onto a 42-41 road win and earn the right to be slaughtered at the hands of Avon next week.......oh well, still fun! I think...

My wife is an Edison grad, so I check in them every once in a while. I was shocked when I looked last week and saw they went undefeated this year!

D1
A lot of matchups sound better than they will likely be, i.e. Moeller vs St. X, Pickerington North vs Central, but I'm going to go St. Ignatius vs. Cleveland Heights in what will be a very evenly matched up but what could potentially be the final game for Coach Chuck Kyle of St Iggy's, one of the greatest coaches in not just Ohio history, but the country.

D2
Region 5 is where it's at for me, and I'll go with Hudson vs. Walsh Jesuit, give me the uber rich public kids over the uber rich private school kids. Everyone drives home in their Tesla after.

D3
This was the easiest pick so far - Tippecanoe vs Trotwood Madison. Bellbrook vs Wapakoneta would have made a very good choice also, but there is no doubt it's Red Devils vs. Rams night baby!

D4
Van Wert vs Sandusky Perkins looks great, but the winner is Steubenville vs. Bishop Hartley. A matchup we would usually see in the Regional Finals and we're getting it in the quarters, buckle up.

D5
I'm going slightly off the beaten path and going #2 Elmwood vs #10 Tinora because this has upset watch alert written on it for me. Tinora is starting to peak, giddy up Rams.

D6
Two Region 21 matchups jump out and they're same side of the bracket, so winners will square up...for me, it's Mogadore vs Canton Central Catholic, and runner up is Cuyahoga Hts vs Youngstown Valley Christian.

D7
Lots of fun matchups, especially Waynesfield-Goshen vs Gibsonburg, #1 McComb vs #9 Pandora-Gilboa (gimme the 9 over the 1 upset), but matchup of the week is going to Minster vs Mechanicsburg, two battle tested teams that should make noise no matter who advances.

Looks like a picture perfect weekend, it'll be a high of 73* up here in Northern Ohio Friday night and I'm not sure nights get any better than bands playing, popcorn wafting, pads whacking on a beautiful November night....living the dream!

Updates

D1
As predicted by my big brain - Cleveland Hts vs St. Ignatius was the game of the night, Coach Kyle survives 50-49 in what was an instant classic. They were down 42-14 at half, but clutched up in order to get the legend one more chance at St. Ed's next week. Woo baby! Mentor vs Medina next week ensures a private vs public D1 R1 final. Olentangy Liberty gets the 28-14 win to upset #1 seeded Dublin Jerome. Pickerington Central beats North 28-20, and keep an eye on Lakota West as they shut out Princeton. Elder vs Lakota West next week, hot sauce.

D2
Riverside goes for 63 and 62 their first two playoff games, they're looking nasty and beat a very solid Nordonia. Hudson beat Walsh Jesuit in the battle of boat shoes. Cincinnati Anderson beat Little Miami in the double digit battle so we have a 10 seed in the regional semi's, and Edgewood beats Piqua in OT. A pretty ho hum round again in D2.

D3
Kenston, a 13, crushes Chaney 31-7, to have our first 13 seed advancing. Chardon vs Kenston and Ursuline vs Canfield, what a set up. Padua upsets Tiffin Columbian so we have another 10 advancing, and Norton upsets Clyde so only one top 4 seed advances on in that region. Wapakoneta shut out Bellbrook 29-0 and Tippecanoe waltzed over Trotwood Madison, 43-14.

D4
Beloit West Branch advances for @Bill Lucas, Buchtel beats Canal Fulton NW 31-14 for our 2nd #13 seed advancing. Canton South with the 7/2 upset over Lisbon Beaver, 56-48. Jefferson Area upset Girard so we have a 7/6 matchup. Van Wert gets a 6/3 upset over Sandusky Perkins. Another 1 seed goes down with Bishop Hartley as a 9 upsetting St. Clairsville 24-21. Steubenville blanks Bishop Hartley, 31-0. Cbus East survives over Cambridge, 40-39 in 2OT. Wyoming crushed Shawnee 35-0. Clinton Massie upsets Urbana 56-42 for our 3rd #13 seed advancing.

D5
Mooney upsets Norwayne for now our 4th #13 seed....good heavens. Wheelersburg upsets previously unbeaten Barnesville 55-31 for the 6/3 upset. Nothing else exciting to see here yet.

D6
Cuyahoga Heights survives 10-6 over Valley Christian in another 6/3 upset. Another surprise, #1 Carey loses 21-14 to North Robinson. Fort Frye scores 71...wow. Marion wins 56-0 to go to 101-0 now in the playoffs....they will face Versailles next week who has only won by a combined 105-7 so far. Meanwhile Harrod Allen East has only won by 94-0 so far. And New Madison Tri Village bringing up the rear at 82-13. All in the same region.

D7
Lucas shocks Lowellville, wow...35-25. Lucas came into the playoffs at 4-6, Lowellville was 11-0, playoffs baby! They'll get Danville who won 42-41 over Jeromesville Hillsdale. McComb survives 26-21 over Pandora-Gilboa. Antwerp also gets a one point win, 35-34, over Delphos Jefferson. Gibsonburg upsets Waynesfield-Goshen in yet another 6/3. Good call bigdog. And we have to end it with another 6/3, Minster beats Mechanicsburg 45-21.

More matchups later next week!

Table Setting - Regional Semi's

We have now hit the stage where we revert back to Fri/Sat and neutral sites
Weather is cooling off considerably and Friday will be wet for most of the day for most of the state....field conditions will impact some of these games, no doubt.

Divisions 1, 2, 3, and 5 will play on Friday's and 4, 6, and 7 will be on Saturday's

Four #13 seeds remain...will any keep the mojo going? Oh....I think so....

I will post the total game schedule in the next post, just highlighting my top games below

D1
St. Ed's vs St. Iggy's...come on...what else could it be? Holy War 2.0 and the chance for Ed's to put the nail in the coffin on Coach Kyle's career.
I'll give runner up to Elder vs. Lakota West...if they keep peaking they can upset Ed's for it all, or they could flame out....they are the Dajuan Wagner of this division. I'm still not sure if that's a compliment or not.

D2
Highland vs. Toledo Central Catholic....Highland rolls in at 12-0, TCC's only loss was a 3 pointer to St. Ed's opening weekend.
Winton Woods vs Kings Mills would be second, which is also 12-0 vs. 11-1, Kings only loss being a 5 pointer to the same WW

D3
Hamilton Badin vs Wapakoneta....oh this is going to be a doozy....is the winner the D3 favorite?

D4
Cinci Wyoming vs Clinton-Massie....#1 vs. #13 but don't let the seeds fool you, CM is peaking at the right time...but not sure anyone is stopping Wyoming

D5
I'll give it to Liberty Benton (#1) vs. Coldwater (#4), but Germantown Valley View vs. Cinci Madeira is close behind. Lots of evenly matched games in this division, I expect some close low scoring games.

D6
Mogadore vs. Cuyahoga Heights....should be a very tight one and the better weather should make it a higher scoring affair
Harrod Allen East vs Tri Village gets an honorable mention, but winner gets to lose to Marion Local next week so congrats?

D7
New Bremen (5) vs Ansonia (1)......this is a good test to see how real Ansonia is
Antwerp (2) vs Gibsonburg (6)....Gibsonburg has just felt like an "it" team this year, I see another upset in their future.

Last night updates

D1
St. Ed's over St. Ignatius, 28-7
Mentor over Medina, 42-21
Olentangy Liberty over Perrysburg, 14-3
Springfield over Centerville, 42-14
Gahanna Lincoln over Pickerington Central, 38-14
New Albany over Upper Arlington, 20-7
Moeller over Mason, 24-16
Lakota West over Elder, 30-10

Olentangy Liberty, starting the playoffs at 5-5 and as an #8, will get a chance to make it to the state semi's...gotta love it!
Ed's easily ends Ignatius and Chuck Kyle's career, that has to sting
New Albany's sports in general are on fire right now
Lakota West...13-0 and peaking, they've beaten every Cinci traditional power with one left in their way....I still have my fingers crossed for a St. Ed's vs Lakota West title game

I'll recap the others later today

No surprise, no surprise, no surprise....and R8 for the save! Kings Mills gets their revenge on their only loss of the season amazing fashion, and then Anderson....another 5-5 to start the playoffs, #10 seed now one win away from the Final Four. Not often you get a regional final with a #4 vs. #10
