The G.O.A.T.
The best time of year (other than the start of the high school season....when hope springs eternal) is officially underway.
This year, more than other years, feels like we have some clear cut favorites that have separated from the pack more so than the last few years.
Feel free to chime in with any predictions or game updates and any games you all plan on visiting!
I'll go more into the matchups for next week later in the week with some fun ones to keep an eye on, upset alerts, etc.
D1
Nothing registering more than a teeny tiny surprise came up this first weekend. Since nearly everyone in D1 gets in, week 1 of the playoffs is typically dull and this was no exception.
I think St. Ed's is the clear cut favorite, Moeller would be 2nd. Dark horse is Lakota West...they have some really high high's where they look like the best team and other weeks where they play down. Interestingly enough, they find themselves as the #3 seed in Region 4 while also being the only undefeated D1 team in the state. Weird.
D2
Much like D1, it was more ho hum than usual....until....Region 8 showed up (I can hear Region 8 yelling 'wild card bitches!' from afar). We had a 15 over a 2 with 3-7 Little Miami shocking 10-0 Xenia 27-24 in 2OT. Wow! Just last week Little Miami beat 0-10 Walnut Hills by 3 and now this week they beat 10-0 Xenia by 3. Unreal. Anderson as a 10 crushed Troy so we'll have a 10 seed hosting and we'll have a double digit in the regional semi's. Pretty dope.
This will be a very competitive division, especially Region 5, but Massillon and Hoban are the current favorites. That said - Hoban seems to be trending down, Massillon up....interesting side plot, Massillon....has never won a state title in the playoff area. 24 state titles before the playoffs, 9 AP titles, and in the playoff era they've had 3 runner-ups. Would be pretty cool to see such a storied program finally win one.
D3
The land where upsets are more common, and we saw them early with Kenston over University School for a 13 over a 4. In all fairness, Kenston is a fantastic team to be a 13, so it's not as cray cray as it seems. Then another 13 over a 4 with Defiance absolutely destroying Cloverleaf, 63-28. Also, Trotwood as an 11 took down a 6 in Chaminade Julienne.
Region 11/12 are both pretty loaded, if you had to pick a team though Badin has probably earned that right to be the D3 favorite right now.
D4
Oh there's that 13 over a 4 again, this time with Buchtel getting a 3 point win over Woodridge. Cambridge cruised as the 11 over the 6 Logan Elm, 31-13. Oh hey, look, another 13 over a 4! Is this the equivalent of 12/5 in March Madness? Clearly yes. Clinton-Massie goes over Unioto, 38-0....and that was a 9-1 Unioto. We also had Eaton, a 14, over a 3 in Bishop Fenwick, 31-28.
Glenville looks very tough this year, a throwback to some of their teams ten or so years prior. Wyoming will be right there too, and honestly I'd love to see those two defenses go at each other....low scoring, hard hitting type of high school title game we've all come to love.
D5
Goddamit another 13 over a 4, WHAT IS HAPPENING. Mooney with a 45-14 win over Edison. JESUS CHRIST IT'S JASON BOURNE or another 13 over a 4, now with Columbus Academy over Centerburg. Otherwise not much chaos.
I have no idea with D5. Ironton? Who knows.
D6
WHY LORD, WHY....13 West Jefferson 49, 4 Newcomerstown 14....Had a 12/5 upset with Twin Valley South over Williamsburg, 70-38....108 points, that seems like a lot.
I feel bad for Fort Frye, they are a legit title contender any other year, but this should be Kirtland vs. Marion Local, this should be THE prime time game slot. Marion Local has 8 shut outs in 11 games...including 5 in a row. They beat previously undefeated Coldwater 35-0 in the season finale. Kirtland plays up constantly, in fact they played D5 and up all year. First D6 game was this week...they are more ready than some will think.
D7
Always fun with chaos, we had a 12/5 upset with Delphos St. Johns over Arlington, 55-24. Oh, that was all the chaos. Wtf D7.
McComb should be pesky, but the top two to me are Newark Catholic and Ansonia and give me the more battle prepped Newark Catholic this year, one of the larger favorites IMO.
There were constant 10/7 upsets, which isn't much of an upset to me so I did not include.
There weren't many close calls with #1 seeds....Dublin Jerome only won 24-14 in their 1/16, they might have another win in them but I don't see anything more than that in R2 of D1.
