2022 Ohio High School Playoffs

D4
West Branch over Buchtel, 41-33
Jefferson Area over Canton South, 49-35
Glenville over Elyria Catholic, 54-7
Van Wert over Millersburg West Holmes, 40-35
Gnadenhutten Indian Valley over Bishop Ready, 34-10
Steubenville over Columbus East, 41-22
Wyoming over Clinton-Massie, 40-7
Taft over Bishop McNicholas, 44-14

One of the best divisions as you have multiple legitimate title contenders in Glenville, Steubenville, and Wyoming with Wyoming the favorite and Glenville close behind. But, teams like Taft are good enough to give them some stress while West Branch seemingly has an easy walk into the state semi's and get their by avoiding the 2-5 seeds.

Kirtland over Dalton, 33-0
Mogadore over Cuyahoga Heights, 41-10
Columbus Grove over North Robinson, 14-7 OT
Columbia Station over Crestview, 12-6
Fort Frye over Coal Grove, 27-14
Bellaire over Nelsonville York, 20-0
Marion Local over Versailles, 35-3
Harrod Allen East over New Madison Tri Village, 37-7

OK, a lot going on here with Kirtland vs Mogadore being maybe THE top matchup to watch next weekend. I'm also going to go out on a limb and say Harrod Allen East will lose by less than 32, which would make it the closest game Marion Local has had this playoff season and their closest since Sept. 23rd

Warren JFK over Salineville, 35-0
Danville over Lucas, 27-20
Lima Central Catholic over McComb, 30-26
Antwerp over Gibsonburg, 35-27
Newark Catholic over Waterford, 35-7
Hannibal River over Caldwell, 42-6
New Bremen over Ansonia, 26-22
Fort Laramie over Minster, 35-19

Lima Central Catholic with the 4 over 1 upset, their game vs Antwerp should be a close battle. Newark vs Hannibal River, teams had walkovers this weekend but next weekend should be much different as well. New Bremen upset the #1 Ansonia who had been cruising, so they get the 5 over 1 upset, Fort Laramie will await them.

OHSAA always provides this tidbit too which I always find interesting;

Which Seeds Have Advanced to the Regional Finals
Of the 28 regions, there are 21 No. 1 seeds in the regional finals and there are nine No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-ups. There are a total of 13 No. 2 seeds, 11 No. 3 seeds, three No. 4 seeds, three No. 5 seeds, two No. 6 seeds, one No. 8 seed and two No. 10 seeds that have advanced to the fourth round.

Bigdog's Game of the Division (BGD for short, of course)

D1
Moeller vs Lakota West
Easy choice - only about 15 minutes separate the two schools, Lakota West is trying to not only win their first state title but also push their way into the top echelon of SE OH programs. Give me Lakota West, they're peaking and Moeller's offense struggles against this elite Firebirds D. Lakota West has only given up more than 14 points once in 13 games...the only undefeated team in D1 rolls on.

D2
Hoban vs Hudson
I would not argue with any of the games being selected, but Hoban is the clear D2 favorite and this is by far their toughest matchup. In fact, outside of St Ed's, this is their second toughest game of the year....and St. Ed's beat Hoban 41-20, they haven't been in a one score game all year. Will that come back to haunt them? Hudson is 13-0 including 4-0 against D1 teams this year, I think this is closer than expected and Hoban gets a 7 point win on a late TD.

D3
Hamilton-Badin vs Tippecanoe
You know it's legit when the rivalry of Holy Name vs. Padua is third on this list, as Canfield vs Chardon is also guaranteed fire. I have a few rules in life, and one of them is never, ever bet against a team named the Red Devils...so give me Tippecanoe in an upset over the #1 and 13-0 Badin Rams.

D4
Wyoming vs Taft
A true no brainer for me, the Cinci area is going to be heated this weekend with all these great matchups....Wyoming has 9 shut outs in 13 games, 3 of the remaining 4 games they gave up 7...Mariemont somehow got 14 and still lost by 35. Taft is no slouch either, they have 7 shutouts including a stretch of 4 straight going into the playoffs. Give me the Wyoming Cowboys (the name never gets old to me), they are just too damn good and move to 14-0.

D5
Liberty Center vs Elmwood
Another loaded set up, it was a tough call between this and Ironton/Harvest Prep. I didn't consider Valley View/West Milton since that is a rematch. The way Liberty Center easily dispatched Coldwater last weekend, and Elmwood got revenge on Eastwood who they lost to in the regular season by 1 and then beat by 21 last weekend, the Elmwood Royals are going to be coming in with a lot of confidence. Unfortunately, the Tigers are too well balanced and I think in any weather they have the goods to adjust and deliver and advance.

D6
Kirtland vs Mogadore
Bigdog's Game of the Weekend (BGW, duh), this game has the potential to be that good. They come in 13-0 and 12-0 respectively, and while just glancing at the numbers Kirtland will look more impressive, Mogadore has the "it" factor. I know you could say Marion Local vs Allen East, but we all know how that game is going to end. This will be an old fashioned shlobber knocker, I've personally made the call to Jim Ross to announce this game, and in the end only one team will move on and stay undefeated and that will be..........the KIrtland Hornets, as they attempt to win their 4th state title in 5 years.

D7
Newark Catholic vs Hannibal River
The Green Wave vs the River Pilots (love the name) have the best and most balanced battle in the division. The winner of this game is likely the favorite to win it all....give me Newark Catholic. They've only given up 14 in the last 5 weeks, and are more battle tested as they've even gone up against D2 earlier this year and held their own.

Last side note: St. Edwards, Chardon, and Marion Local are the remaining state champs from 2021 still in contention to defend their titles (or in Marion Local's case, claim another as they bumped from D7 to D6 this year).

Hoban vs Hudson
St Eds was the largest team Hoban faced by a ton (pun intended)
Iggy was bigger than Hoban but Hoban's run game was the difference.
Hoban will be the fastest team Hudson has seen this year.. on both sides
Two high scoring offenses
Two really good defenses.. whoever controls the other run game wins..
Game being in Twinsburg is dang near homefield for Hudson

I was disappointed, but certainly not shocked, that Coldwater lost. They were pretty beat-up the last few weeks. I'm glad they made it as far as they did. On a sad note, my nephew finished his senior year and will be last of my family to play for a few years. He's the youngest of that generation and the oldest had kids that are toddlers. First time in a long time that I'll have no relatives on the field for the Cavs.

I'm rooting for Kirkland vs Marion Local, that might be the Flyers best test. I would expect them to win by 2 tds, though.

Their fans will probably travel as it gives them the chance to say "I'm from Hudson."

Hoban's Sperling has 3 more TDs in the 1st half.. up 20-0 over Hudson...
that's 14 TDs for him in the last 15 days.. so far
now up 27-0 at half.. but wasn't Sperlings 4th.. YET

Hudson (12-0) has never seen speed like Hoban brings...

Reminds me of a lesson many years ago... good buddy was head coach of a Div 1 team with a really good record
facing a team with one of the top 2 backs in all Ohio... and they got peeled
We're walking off and a fan screams at my buddy for not having his team ready for this RB
He turns to me and says "ya know I wanted to have the fastest RB in the state on my scout team so my defense would get to experience that speed... I just didn't have one.. dumb f*@ker" ..
speed is like Mike Tyson's line "everybody has a plan until they get punched in the nose"...
it's that "holy shit" moment .. and especially when you're undefeated

and there it is.. Sperling with his 4th & 5th TDs.. 41-0
Hudson is stunned... when you know you have no answer for the speed.. feel for ya Explorers
another problem is... Sperling is most likely done for the night but next 2 RBs are burners too

This weekend's games/schedule
Region 3
1 Gahanna-Lincoln (12-1) vs. 3 New Albany (10-3) at Historic Crew Stadium
I saw this post and decided to see how Gahanna is doing....

Fh2vdhjX0AIT4zR

I just live a couple blocks from the Gahanna High School and had no idea that they were this (i.e. 12-1) good this year.

Re: Celebrating 25 years of Gahanna hockey.

In addition, since there are no ice rinks in Gahanna, I had no idea they even had an ice hockey team:

Anyway: GO LIONS!!!
