It amuses me immensely that the same dumbasses in their fanbase who cry about college football being ruined and destroyed by cheating because they happen to have a dumpster fire program that can’t win big games, has abnormally high attrition every offseason, and is completely unable to recruit at an elite level—all phenomena easily attributable to their laughably flailing head coach who is on the spectrum and can’t even manage to put together a decent staff—are all in on their basketball team, a sport that is clearly documented to be significantly more corrupt and troublesome than football when it comes to impermissible benefits from top programs, simply because they manage to compete. And then they lose in basketball too.

Fuck them.

Nevermind the fact that their own basketball program was busted for infractions far more blatant than anything Ohio State football has been accused of anywhere but their own message boards.

I'm sure their response to that would be that it was a long time ago (a criterion they appear to be unable to think of when discussing football).

Yeah... It was so long ago that your current coach was in on it as a player. That makes it all ok, right?

Still, to my knowledge, the largest pay for play case in NCAA history.

Just sayin.

No, they take the even more ridiculous angle that it had nothing to do with the program and the university. Ed Martin (?) was merely some rogue guy who came out of nowhere and spoiled their pristine image. Yet out of the other side of their mouths, the non-alum from Dayton who gave TS 500 clams to pay his cellphone bill was the greatest scandal in college football history. Never mind that we self-reported our episode while they tried to cover theirs up for years.

Wasn't there a 30 for 30 show about that? There has to have been. I remember so many people validating their payments. That team was trend-setters and the evil university made kajillions of dollars off them. They should be allowed to make a couple of dollars, shouldn't they?

I'm not saying that they have no point, but they were caught breaking the rules. Don't cry about your team losing some banners and then insist that everyone else is a cheater.

and don't forget that on the football side, in 1997 Charles Woodson would have been ineligible had the NCAA looked into the benefits he received, and later admitted to, from an agent.

Today, with social media, he gets nailed.

Wasnt there also something about a booster or an agent buying him an insanely expensive suit for the Heisman ceremony? I seem to recall something like that, though I'm overloaded by their hypocrisy.

I never heard that he admitted to it. Though I can believe it. I thought it was all just speculation, so I didn't bring that up.

That was the only story I ever heard about him being paid - someone else paid for his suit.

He admitted it under oath during some lawsuit against an agent that defrauded him iirc.

It used to be an easy to find thing but I'll be damned if i can easily find it right now.

Here is a thread on it from MGOBLOW

https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/woodson-allegedly-took-while-playing-u-m

The original article is linked but it's now dead. Usual bullshit you'd expect..."FaX! & Evidents!" howls start..facts are given..."Freep hates us"/"We didn't really cheat"/"other teams are worse" rationalizations begin.

He took a plane trip in May 1997 and again before the Rose Bowl. If it had been discovered, their 1/2 a NC in the last 80 years is out the window. Not overly convenient for them to discuss but it's pretty cut and dried.
