With Banks and Brown out, I am going to wait on passing judgement.
Just throwing this question out there to anyone, but do we really even know how much better Banks and Brown are over young guys like Watts and Burke? Like are we expecting more from the former 2 based on a suspect 2020 from Banks, and we barely saw much of Brown? I'd like a solid rotation from the 4, but Brown essentially only has name recognition over the younger guys. I wouldn't be surprised if Banks and Burke start against Oregon
We were in single high all game too.. we couldn't line up with 2 deep just to confuse them a few times? Could always motion into single high once the ball is snapped but we didn't do a ton different. Will work vs not great teams but in order to take on an elite offense we will need to be more diverse.I haven't re-watched the Minny game yet but I'm almost positive I saw the MLB walked out to cover a guy on the first or second defensive series. Given that this would have been the first or second defensive series after the shitshow we witnessed against Bama, I became immediately uncomfortable.
Point being, the names of the corners are one thing. The predictability of the defensive scheme is something else.
Banks is not a first round talent at the moment. Unless you meant the old day period of rounds for the draft. For Banks, yes I think there's a significant drop...potential Day 1 draft pick and I think has performed well overall here. Brown is a little more unknown given his injury problems. But the difference I think is more pronounced in my eyes because we had two young CBs starting the opener on the road instead of two guys with plenty of starting experience. Over time, I think Watts and Burke will be right there with experience though, they showed some promise.
Oh boy... get em' @BuckeyeNation27Just stopping by to once again say that Kerry Coombs is out of his depth.
I think the question that needs to be asked: does Ryan Day have the Saban like ice water in the veins to whack him after this season when his unit once again under performs given the talent?
The defense certainly lacks creativity/diversity. I would expect Day to demand the same creativity from his defense that he demands from his offense.Just stopping by to once again say that Kerry Coombs is out of his depth.

I’m all in the disguise think..make the QB hesitate and the rush and coverage gets better.Ive seen this from Coombs for a decade at Colerain. He can motivate and gets kids to buy in with the best of them. But his defense will never change. ‘This is what we do and we aren’t changing’. I had hoped being in the NFL had taught him zone principals and zone blitz schemes and how to disguise looks and fronts. Clearly that has not happened or he just won’t do it. The man can’t change who he is.
Shockingly, you don't get it. Even after I explained it to you in a previous post. You can call out bad coaching. What you can't do is call it out when you are saying something dumb. "Coombs is out of his depth" after a year of bad defense is fair. "Ryan Day should be fired" after what he's done....or something equally stupid like "the coaches fucked up by letting Jameson get away" with the WRs we have....is not fair or smart.Oh boy... get em' @BuckeyeNation27
Yeah saying we made an error letting Williams get away is so much worse than saying our defensive coordinator is out of his league.Shockingly, you don't get it. But you can keep it up and be a martyr if you want.
Keep digging.Yeah saying we made an error letting Williams get away is so much worse than saying our defensive coordinator is out of his league.
I pointed out a single error (which I think it will prove to be) hardly saying our staff sucks etc.
