Yeah idk I’m like others here and am on the fence with the defense. A lot of young players back there though so it’s hard to project where they’ll be. Is it shades of 2014 where they round into form after early season struggles or is it like years past where the defense is clearly flawed and will be so all year.

Also hard to know how good Gophers are on offense. My guess is they won’t be that good especially with Ibrahim out but who knows.

I guess preseason is poor term for me to use, as I was more trying to say that they were trying to see what they had from a bunch of young unproven players. Especially with Banks and Brown not playing. I wonder if you see a solid 3-4 man rotation at CB going forward, and 2-3 from the LBs.

And I can see what you're saying about personnel matchups, and trying to get guys who are better in coverage on clear passing downs and bigger guys when they knew it was a run. But it was easy to tell that the late subs were confused and out of sorts at times. But I chalked some of that up to that almost all of the guys were so young and/or inexperienced. So they're subbing an inexperienced Eichenburg for a young and inexperienced Simon, or they're subbing a young and inexperienced Burke for a young and inexperienced Watts.

But this was a team and defense that we all kind of knew wouldn't hit their stride until mid season.
IMO we have 4 CBs... Banks, Brown, Watts and Burke. Forget anyone else outside of garbage time...

At the game again I can tell you us trying to match personnel was a disaster. We have got to pick a base and pick a best 11. From there we have to sub in when players are tired.

I hear you, but Cavazos looked pretty good. And also where do you play Williamson who sat against Minny?

And fully agreed on that. But the team has a lot of talent. Do you not rotate LBs? Do we mainly stay with Simon, Mitchell and a Bullet and that's it? Do we rotate Bullets? There's still a lot of questions after game 1

Being at the game it felt like Cavazos and Ransom were picked on to be honest. I thought Watts and ESPECIALLY Burke were great. They tried picking on Burke but he had none of it.

IMO, no you don't rotate. Someone's the best option and they need to figure that out. IMO, Simon and Mitchell are the best LBs. For the secondary they need to figure that out

Eh early season you rotate end of the season you go good on good. Part of the reason we are here in the first place is because of the short season last year mixed with being unable to put teams away and get the young pups reps. I'm not sure rotating in Minnesota and Oregon are best for winning those games but they certainly help down the road.

Pass rush managed to flash here and there in the second half but I hope the coaching staff challenges them to become consistent. I don’t know how likely it is that defense drastically improves throughout the course of the season, but even gradual will go a long way.

Hopefully the CB grabbing will get cleaned up; the coverage is there though

We scored 4 TDs in 13 plays.

The Minnie D may have been frustrated, but they shouldn't have been tired.

I have to believe our D would love a nice 15 play drive now and then. But that isn't Day-Ball. We need depth.
Yeah Minnie's D being tired is the biggest laugher I've head. Of what sitting on the bench? Our D was probably tired but Minnie should have been fresh. They just got their asses kicked

I am good with rotating lots of players. In the end, we beat Minnie by having depth ... Minnie could not survive the loss of their running back, while we survived the loss of two corners. In the end, Coombs will succeed by outrecruiting.

I'm good with personnel packages/situational defensive substitutions. It's been a trend in CFB for a while because it works in the NFL. It needs to be done better but that is the kind of stuff I do expect to see improve as the season progresses.

What scares me about Coombs is the predictability of his "fastball", as he put it, (straight, press man to man defense). It works most of the time because he does have more talent than the opponent but he isn't outrecruiting Alabama and even some of the overmatched teams have good enough QB/WR combo's to hurt this defense (as we have seen over and over again).

The theory of press man is based on the jump ball being < a 50/50 probability while the QB is under heavy pressure. We're seeing press man with the QB's getting time and the WR's winning the jump balls or getting PI > 50%.

It's time to develop some offspeed pitches.

I'm willing to take a second look. Credit Fleck for coming up with a plan knowing he couldn't line up in a normal offense against the Buck's talent and win, so he went with a slow grind, run first, two receivers, max pass pro, and short/medium pass strategy. It took them into the middle of the third quarter and kept them within reasonable range until the final 7 minutes. Well thought out, well-coached plan across the board.

For the Bucks, it was kind of like playing Army or Navy, going against a defense and an offense you won't see the rest of the season. When will they see a consistent 6/7/8 man Oline?

My greatest concerns? 1. How do you keep the rest of the receivers, especially Wilson, happy? 2. How do you keep 3 QBs happy? 3. ESPN going full tilt to get two SEC teams into the playoffs. 4. Nobody on NDs schedule that I believe can beat them and no CCG game for them to get into the CFPs.

Just roll a die and on 2 run zone, 4 run a zone blitz, and on all the rest do your base man press with a blitz on certain numbers.

Keeping the offense/QB even a little bit uncertain would be a big improvement.

Haha you may be joking but I've always thought something similar would be interesting to see. Couldn't attack tendencies then at least.

Kerry seems fairly predictable as it's been said... going to play press man at one spot and a 5 yard cushion at the other spot. We are either going to blitz the A gaps with our inside guys or we are going to rush 4.
