Yes it was; but the Buckeyes need to tackle better, he still got too many yards after contact (YAC).

My retort to Mr Williams, or anyone trying to feel good about the defense, would be this;
When we knew Minny was going to run they were able to run.
When Ibrahim went out and they were down by 2 scores we knew they were going to pass and they were able to do that.

A more accomplished offense picks right back up where Bama left off last night. Top 5 recruiting class after top 5 recruiting class and we can't keep a team under 30. Something is very wrong.

Bobby Carpenter just opined on the defense on his radio show.
  • Cam Brown and Sevyn Banks being out had a lot to do with it
  • Thought the run-defense was ok apart from the 4th and 1 play
  • People who constantly harp on "they need to get their heads turned" need to calm down
His explanation on the last point was weak; essentially he means "yes, it's something they should do, but give them time, they're young"

Well the thing is Bobby, turned head or no, our DB's lose what seems like 80+% of contested balls if they aren't getting away with flagrant PI.

I know there aren't many good offensive teams on the schedule but an entire two deep of 4 and 5 star defensive guys just got their shit pushed in for 31 points against a one man offense when the one man only played about 3 quarters.

Offense wins these days and defenses aren't going to shut anyone out but jesus-tittyfucking-christ, it's groundhog day with this side of the ball.

There needs to be a galactic leap forward or Coombs needs to go.

The way I put it last night was, "I remain unimpressed..." with Coombs. But that's the self-editing that I build in on gameday. The less diplomatic but perhaps more accurate way of describing my position would be to say that "I would be pleasantly surprised if I am not holding a pitchfork and/or a torch outside of the Woody at season's end, demanding his ouster."

There are concerns, but Hickman, Ransom, Watts, Burke, Cavazos, and Shaw all showed positives to build from. Two starters, Banks and Brown, didn't play at all. Also appeared as if the staff was treating this like an NFL pre-season game.

There were two missed tackles on the 4th and 1 and the TD on a complete bust because six guys lined up wrong on a play immediately after a mass-substitution. These are easily correctable mistakes. A bunch of young guys that have not played a meaningful snap of football in at least two years made a couple unforced errors on the road in bad weather that turned a 10-0 game into a 10-14 game in five minutes.

To me, it's very reminiscent of the 2014 opener against Navy. That didn't look like a national title winning defense en route to giving up 400 yards to a team everybody knew wouldn't attempt five passes all game, but they figured it out.

…and if Grinch actually does lead OU to an improved defense this year?

This board will be in full meltdown.

I’m still in wait and see mode but certainly concerned

Last year was very hard to gauge from considering a depleted secondary, and the weirdness from COVID and how much that impacted a normal development year.

Coombs is on a fairly short leash with me but there’s still some slack in that leash.

As a positive…..I saw way WAY more young guys flash last night than I did the first last year when it basically didn’t happen.

I’m probably more a Jimmy and Joe’s guy than an X’s and O’s kinda guy and so that is extremely encouraging.

I literally didn’t see any young defenders flash last year. Let’s see how they develop.

My main concern from last night is scheme. That RPO slant is still wide open whenever the opponent wants. There’s 11+ guys that are good enough to field an elite defense. Banks, Brown, Burke/Watts, Proctor, & Hickman should be an elite group. But the scheme puts them at a disadvantage. If they’re committed to the 4-2-5, Mitchell & Simon should never leave the field unless you’re taking off Mitchell for an obvious pass. Tommy E just doesn’t look like he has it. Gant was pushed around. Hopefully Gaoteote is granted his waiver.

My thing is if they are committed to a 4-2-5 run a 4-2-5 don't run a 4-3 and put a safety in a LB spot. That hurts us against the run and doesn't really help all that much in the pass.
