2021 Spring Practices, Game, and Tidbits

I forgot to mention McCord's day which was pretty impressive. I was less impressed with how Miller looked. Stroud was making throws that were the most pro like and has separated from the other two. He looked confident in what he was doing. Miller looked shakey. McCord was letting it rip and it cost him an interception. CBSSports article says it was Miller who threw an interception?

Miller threw an interception on the first drive.

One thing the James Laurinaitis noticed calling the game was that Miller hitched on a few balls and I have to say go back and watch some highlights from spring because he does it there too. Miller seems to hold onto the ball and takes a lot of check downs.

Would seem the two most confident are CJ and then McCord.

1. Overall I thought Stroud looked a little better than McCord today. Stroud hit the field running and McCord might have been a little nervous and fumbled on his first drive. Miller comes in third. CJ Stroud (11-15, 127 yds, 2 TD), Kyle McCord (9-13, 130 yds, 1 TD), and then Jack Miller (12-23, 100 yds, 1 INT).

2. This season it is Olave/Wilson as the 1-2 punch at WR. But in a year or 2 it will be Egbuka/Harrison, those 2 guys are the "real deal".

3. He was out of bounds, but Stover made a great one handed catch. I'll go out on a limb here and say will be very good at TE.

4. Seibert needs to work on his field goal kicking.

5. It may not be in 2021 due to the depth at DE, but Sawyer is a future "sack machine" at DE.

As much as I agree, we can't forget about the talent of JSN, who will arguably be the #3 in the slot and sometimes outside this year. But those 2 are for real, and will be tough to keep off the field. And are the main reason why I see Williams make a free fall down the depth chart. The WRs are so freaking deep. The rotation I predict is:
1st String: Olave, Wilson, JSN
2nd: Harrison Jr, Egbuka, Williams OR Fleming

That's a ton of talent in one room.

3. The defense is going to be much better than they showed today. They'll get Johnson and Hancock in the Fall, probably will get the kid from Tennessee and have good odds of landing JTT. The DL is already elite and if we can sure up LB we can be a very good defense. Adding JTT though takes this DL to a true force though with the amount of depth we would have of actual impact players.

The offense is going to be much better than they showed today too. You'll have:
a. the consistency of the "one guy" at QB.
b. a real running game, that involves no being don until they are actually tackled.
c. the best 5 guys on the OL at one time (including the ones that were held out of the Spring Game).
d. the benefit of the fall camp practices.

Now I just hope Special Teams is better:
a. missed 2 field goals.
b. at least one of the 2 kickoffs went out of bounds.
c. punting distance was just "meh".

HENDERSON FLASHES AS A RUNNER AND RECEIVER

Henderson led all Ohio State running backs with six carries for 26 yards, including a 14-yard carry for the game’s longest run, while he also caught five passes for 29 yards. While he wasn’t able to demonstrate his ability to break tackles in the spring game, his explosive burst was evident as well as his ability to catch passes out of the backfield.

FROM LONG SNAPPER TO LINEBACKER

With several linebackers sidelined by injuries, Ohio State had just five healthy linebackers available for Saturday’s spring game – Teradja Mitchell, K’Vaughan Pope, Tommy Eichenberg, Cody Simon and Reid Carrico – and as a result, the Buckeyes had to get creative.

Roen McCullough, Ohio State’s backup long snapper, became a temporary linebacker for the spring game – and made some plays in the process. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound redshirt junior, who has never played a snap in an actual game for the Buckeyes, recorded four tackles and a pass breakup in Saturday’s scrimmage.

Just sayin': I believe last year that some of the O-Zone writers had quit and moved over to Buckeye Scoop. The O-Zone hasn't died, it is still in business. They have at least 2 writers (i.e. John Porentas and Caroline Rice) left.

Finally got to see the spring game tonight on the DVR. Brief thoughts:

1. Jack Sawyer is one bad mamajamma.
2. Emeka Egbuka is going to be hard to keep off the field. So will Marvin Jr. The receiver room in the WHAC is truly ridiculous.
3. All the QBs looked OK; we would win the B1G with any of them. I think it's still a very wide-open competition. None of them is going to make us forget Justin Fields, though.
4. The OL has some highly talented blockers that nonetheless are overwhelmed by a pass rusher as talented as Jack Sawyer.

I won’t offer a repeat of what’s already been said, but I’m wondering: Did Burke just completely whiff on on MHJ at the LOS or did MHJ just vanish like a genie with his footwork? Was it a combination? I’m just asking because it’s funny to see Harrison create that much separation within such a close proximity/short route

Jack's pressure came against backups of backups. Which isn't to take away from what he did.....he was in the backfield all day, which is more than can be said of anybody else by a lot. But concerns over the OL for this season shouldn't be made based on Jack Sawyer getting sacks against Grant Toutant, Zen Michalski, and Enokk Vimahi.

Yeah, I doubt Sawyer has the same success again NPF and Munford...
But the fact that he did have success at all against OL who have been in college for multiple years is a positive sign
