2021 NCAA Tournament, Brackets and games

What is the lowest seed to make Final Four in NCAA Tournament?

Unfortunately for the Bruins — or fortunately, considering they had to win their previous five tournament games — history is against Cronin and Co. No team lower than an 8 seed has ever advanced beyond the Final Four, and only one such team has ever won it all (Villanova's 1984-85 team, which beat Georgetown 66-64 in the final).

Several teams have tried it since 2000, but all have fallen — some harder than others — in the penultimate round of the NCAA Tournament. Can UCLA break that trend and become the greatest Cinderella story ever? Or will the Bruins succumb to history at the hand of Gonzaga's overpowered team?

Either way, we can't wait to watch their attempt.

Butler (2011) National championship loss (53-41 to UConn)
Kentucky (2014) National championship loss (60-54 to UConn)

9 Wichita State (2013) Final Four loss (72-68 to Louisville)

10 Syracuse (2016) Final Four loss (83-66 to North Carolina)

2021 Final Four: Transfer trend will be on full display during NCAA Tournament title chase

As the number of players in college basketball's transfer portal swells to record numbers amid the expectation that NCAA rules will change to allow all first-time transfers immediate eligibility next season, the sport is bracing for seismic change.

While the impact of widespread transferring on college basketball is set to accelerate considerably, it will merely be a continuation of a trend that has seen elite programs become increasingly reliant on transfer talent in recent years.

That trend will be on full display during the Final Four on Saturday, when eight transfers are expected to start between the four teams in action. Baylor, Gonzaga, Houston and UCLA each start at least one transfer, and two of them — Houston and UCLA — are led in scoring by a transfer.

By comparison, there were a total of five transfers who started in Final Four games during a decade's worth of Final Fours between 2006 and 2015. The total began creeping up slightly in 2016, when Oklahoma and Syracuse each started a transfer in a Final Four game. By 2018, the number had ballooned to five with Loyola Chicago using two transfers in its starting lineup during its historic Final Four run.

Just sayin': More transfers are the future of college sports.

Tough game for Paige Bueckers. 18-6-4 but struggled shooting. Aari McDonald for Arizona is fun to watch. She took over against IU in the Elight Eight and last night against the Huskies.

Stanford held on to win by a missed putback against South Carolina.

Excited for the men’s games even though I’m inclined to think blowouts in both. Maybe Houston makes it ugly enough but I don’t think they pull down 40% of their misses against Baylor.

Houston-Baylor could be a classic. That is gonna be a great game. Gonzaga should beat UCLA easily, but who knows.
