2021 CFB Playoff Discussion

And what do you, me, and most of the posters on BP except Gator and Big Woof bitch about? Wah, wah, Auburn isn't shit, why do they always get rated in the top 25 pre-season? Wah, wah, Florida State isn't shit, why do they always get rated early in the season? Wah, wah, those sheep humpers at aTm lose a game and they stay right where they were, Purdue loses and they drop 11? Wah, wah, Texas blows a 20 point lead to Okie and they only drop 2.

Conference perception helps. And let's take the other POV - look at what is going to happen to the public's perception of the Big 12 when Oklahoma is replaced by Cincinnati and Texas by Houston.
Wait a minute, are you trying to lump in the ACC & B12 with the SEC, as though people don't largely disrespect the ACC/B12?

Oklahoma was not respected before they lost any games.
The ACC hasn't had a second team in years, and their only team was bad this year.

Yeah, if Ohio State takes care of business they'll get in the CFP. And why is that? Because the Big Ten brand has been established over a long period of time. Because public opinion believes that beating a Big Ten team takes effort (except Northwestern and Indiana). Because The Game draws eyes like few other college games can - and if Michigan were shit, those eyes would not be there because no one would care except Ohio State fans.
In no world has the B1G been getting the benefit of the doubt for the past decade. It's been disliked more often than it's been liked. There have been a few exceptions to that (like earlier this year), and usually that was followed by almost all of those teams cratering.

OSU gets respect for being good.
USC will get respect quickly if they're good. The rest of the league being terrible will not matter.
Oklahoma would have had respect if they were actually good and not just 1/3 of a football team.
Clemson kept respect despite the rest of the league turning into the new big east.
Clemson lost respect when they were no longer good.

One, I think you’re mixing opinions here on BP with reality. And 2, your argument basically comes down to thinking that dUMb winning the title somehow benefits OSU or the B1G in the eyes of the people it matters to…the selection committee. Now you’re welcome to that opinion, but I don’t think it matters one way or the other. And that’s because ESPN has a direct financial stake in the SEC that it doesn’t have in any other conference. And considering they control >95% of the media noise (no one gives a fuck about Fox), the SEC will be king where it matters until that changes. And that’s not going to change. I watched the first 5 minutes of the “selection show” and almost vomited listening to the SEC will be king where it matters until that changes. And that’s not going to change.and all the other bullshit they were spewing.

So go ahead and root for Michigan…but as long as the SEC controls the media and the committee keeps picking 2 SEC teams any chance it gets, the results of the next 10 playoffs won’t matter.

And how does the SEC control the media? And why does the committee pick two SEC teams? 1. Because SEC teams have played extremely well in the CFBs. 2 Because the two Big Ten teams that have been in the playoffs have frequently been blown out. 3. Tell me that Notre Dame didn't benefit from being in a conference with Clemson. Tell me that Clemson's string of good teams and success in the CFPs hasn't resulted in better rankings for ND, FSU, UNC, NC State, Pitt, and Miami, especially pre-season and the early weeks of the season.

"The SEC will be king where it matters until that changes. And that’s not going to change..." It's not going to change until Big Ten teams start winning more CFP games.
"what about the narrative that G5’s will never get in” and “what about the narrative that the committee was trying to avoid SEC matchups in the final” OK, is this not the first time a G5 team got in? That's news. It's also news driven by public opinion. And, given how the final two weeks of the season worked out, how else could the committee have placed the 4 teams? They had a choice between an undefeated Cincinnati, a two loss Ohio State, a one loss Michigan State, a one loss ND that lost by 14 to Cincinnati - at home. There was nobody in the Big 12 that didn't have two losses. And there was nobody in the PAC 12 or ACC that moved the needle.

ESPN has a contract with the SEC.

ESPN makes more money, the better the SEC brand is.

See how little public opinion has to do with anything yet?

Would it make a difference if the last 24 years didn't look like this?
2020 Alabama CFP
2019 LSU CFP
2018 Clemson CFP
2017 Alabama CFP
2016 Clemson CFP
2015 Alabama CFP
2014 Ohio State CFP
2013 Florida State BCS
2012 Alabama BCS
2011 Alabama BCS
2010 Auburn BCS
2009 Alabama BCS
2008 Florida BCS
2007 LSU BCS
2006 Florida BCS
2005 Texas BCS
2004 Southern California BCS
2003 LSU, Southern California BCS, AP, FWAA
2002 Ohio State BCS
2001 Miami (Fla.) BCS
2000 Oklahoma BCS
1999 Florida State BCS
1998 Tennessee BCS
1997 Michigan, Nebraska AP, FWAA, NFF, USA/ESPN

Notre Dame gets help from NBC and the national media. If Notre Dame had won five of those NCs, would public opinion of Notre Dame's program be different? The Big Ten has won 3 NCs in this time frame. If they'd won ten would public opinion of the Big Ten be different? Four SEC teams have won an NC. Two big Ten teams have won and BPers like to claim that Nebraska should have won the 97 NC.

ESPN promotes the SEC, but it's what the SEC has done in the last 25 years that pushes the public perception and thus the media's perception of the SEC.

Lest I be accused of loving the SEC I'll reiterate my original statement. I won't be rooting for ANY SEC team in any game of the CFPs.

Problem is that shouldn't matter.

They shouldn't be giving out lifetime achievement selections based on prior years. Probably because they are mostly lazy and don't want to actually watch games and have to actually evaluate teams, and also that whole ratings and money thing

Alabama and Georgia will meet up in the NC game again, Bama has the better QB again, so does anyone outside of Alabama want to watch that?

I'll be playing bocce with Woody, Bo, and Joe Pa that night, while getting drunk. Y'all have fun. See you next season.
