Positive spin...this basically signals that Jim is staying, no?

Otherwise the whole staff would be going.

This means he’s made a move to “switch things up”, blame others and take responsibility for this next hire.

Or Brown’s contract contained a provision that scUM saved some money by canning him now? For example, Brown’s agent may have assumed scUM would always have a bowl game and got a renewal provision that was triggered by December 22 (to attempt to give Brown the leverage of walking during bowl prep).

The way signing day shook out for them, I get the feeling Simple Jim is coming back. I cannot imagine they held most of their class together without assurances that most of the staff would be returning.

Either that, or they're pulling a fast one on the kids that signed and Simple Jim and his staff are gone once they "mutually part ways" and he heads to the NFL.

Farewell, Dr. Blitz.

"Pulling a fast one" looking more like a real possibility.

Good point.

And I get to laugh at their failed assumption of a bowl game as foolish in this scenario.

He hired Brown, what makes you think he won't want another "mulligan" for his next DC hire too?......8D

Apparently there is NO retention bonus for 2021 in his contract nor was was there any "bowl game" bonuses/triggers; however, it does appear he'll be owed $1.7M for 2021:

Michigan’s Don Brown due $600K retention bonus next month
Mar 18, 2020

Defensive coordinator Don Brown is set to receive a $600,000 retention bonus if he remains employed by Michigan as of April 1, an amount that is more than half his $1.1 million salary in 2020, according to terms of his contract.

Retention bonuses are becoming common nowadays in college football, incentivizing coveted assistants to remain at their respective institutions during the coaching carousel in December, January and February. Brown signed a new three-year contract last February, one that increased his yearly base salary and added these bonuses.

“The Retention Bonus for the applicable Contract Year shall be paid to Coach in his April paycheck of that Contract Year if the Coach is employed as the Assistant Coach/ Defensive Coordinator for the Michigan Football Team on April 1 of the applicable Contract Year,” the terms of Brown’s contract reads.

Brown collected more than $1.6 million in compensation in 2019, a figure that included a $1 million salary and $500,000 retention bonus in April.

He is not under contract to receive such a bonus in 2021, when his base salary is expected to jump to $1.7 million.

I know we shouldn't bash high schoolers, but you're fucking stupid if this is a surprise to you.

They decided to go there in the first place. I think that establishes a fair baseline that they are poor decision makers. Continued demonstrations of that probably shouldn't surprise us.

And so it begins.

They can make all the changes they want this offseason. If it'll still be Simple Jim making the hires, his hires during his tenure of ranged from mediocre (Fisch, Pep) to catastrophic (most of their current staff). The old "rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic" metaphor springs to mind...
Do they have any staff he came in with still there besides his 'son'? And I don't see why he insists on keeping the crayon eater around as a coach.

We laugh at dr blitz but other than this year their defense has mostly been fine, with one notable exception at the end of the season. Hard to believe they get an upgrade, especially with harbaugh clearly needing a big year in 2021 with a very depleted roster. This seems like a move to appease the fans/boosters, when the offense is the real underperformer. In modern football, sometimes you have to outscore the other team and jimmy just can't do that. Ohhh well, should make #hang100 easier next year, if tsun doesn't come up with a new excuse to not play the Game.

His "son" is the only one left from his original staff. And they guys he's been bringing in have been progressively worse. Nobody on his current staff recruits worth a damn.

Don Brown's defenses have always done very well against teams that they could simply out-talent. Look back.at his track record; whenever he has played a team that was either equally/more talented or well coached/schemed, his defenses regularly got absolutely slaughtered. He was horrific at making adjustments...remember 2018 when tOSU ran slant after slant after slant and torched them every time? He was not a good DC.
