From that list (BOLD indicates (subjectively lived up to hype):

  1. 2016- Rashan Gary, DT (1.0000) Came nowhere near ranking. Had decent SO season, but disappeared as a JR and entered the draft. Mid-1st Rd pick, did very little as a rookie.
  2. 2014- Jabrill Peppers, ATH (0.9992) One of the most wildly overhyped players in recent CFB history. Maybe most overhyped since Paul Hornung. One career college interception, which was a gift tipped to him. Disappeared against top competition. Biggest impact was in return game where he was good, not great. Late 1st Rd pick, spent 2 years as a below average S for the Clowns and now 1 season of average play for NYG.
  3. 2007- Ryan Mallett, QB (0.9978) Played poorly as a FR and transferred to Arkansas after DickRod was hired. Became a pretty good QB at Arkansas, but fell to 3rd round because of work ethic questions. Made 8 NFL starts and was out of the league after 6 years.
  4. 2003- LaMarr Woodley, LB (0.9972) Lived up to ranking, playing at TSUN from 2003-05. B1G DPOY and 1st team AA in 2006. 2nd Rd pick of Stillers, had a few good years for them, making 1 Pro Bowl, then bounced around a bit before retiring after 2015 with 58 career sacks over 9 seasons.
  5. 2003- Prescott Burgess, S (0.9970) Had a decent 2 seasons as a starting LB at TSUN, but did not approach hype. Best remembered for getting trucked by Antonio Pittman in the endzone on game-winning score of 2005 edition of The Game. 6th Rd pick, spent 4 years as reserve LB in Baltimore making no real impact.
  6. 2001- Kelly Baraka, RB (0.9944) Flamed out before ever playing a game (Drugs).
  7. 2006- Brandon Graham, LB (0.9930) 3 excellent years at TSUN as starting DE from 2007-09, living up to his ranking. Mid-1st Rd pick of Iggles, has had a very solid pro career.
  8. 2019- Daxton Hill, S (0.9927) TBD, had 36 tackles and 1 Int in 12 games as a FR.
  9. 2017- Donovan Peoples-Jones, WR (0.9925) #1 receiver in his class wildly underachieved at TTUN, totaling 103 catches for 1327 yards and 14 TD in 3 seasons. 6th Rd pick of Clowns, who will try to tap the potential scUM failed miserably to develop.
  10. 2004- Chad Henne, QB (0.9924) 4 Year starter had excellent FR season tossing jump balls to Braylon Edwards. Numbers dropped each season. Bleh pro career making 53 starts for Dolphins and Jags, going 18-35.
  11. 2001- Ernest Shazor, S (0.9922) 2 year starter for TSUN was somehow a consensus All-American in 2004 as a JR, entered the draft and went undrafted. Recorded 1 tackle for Arizona Cardinals in 2005. That was it. That was his pro career.
  12. 2005- Kevin Grady, RB (0.9914) Most notable for logging a blind-drunk DUI at TSUN. Totalled 783 yards (3.9 ypc) and 10 TD in 4 seasons at scUM.
  13. 2017- Aubrey Solomon, DT (0.9879) Totalled 19 tackles in 10 games over 2 seasons at TSUN before transferring to Tennessee where he was a rotational DT in 2019 totalling 28 tackles, 4 tfl and 2 sacks. Back for SR year in 2020.
  14. 2013- Derrick Green, RB (0.9874) Fat guy RB totaled 898 yards and 3 TD in 3 seasons at TSUN. Transferred to TCU for SR year and logged 141 yards and 2 TD there.
  15. 2019- Chris Hinton, DT (0.9867) TBD. Managed 10 tackles in 4 games as a FR in 2019.
  16. 2001- Marlin Jackson, CB (0.9857) 3 year starter ('02-'04) had a pretty good career, capped by Consensus All-America selection as a SR in 2004. Late 1st Rd pick of Colts in 2005, Spent 5 "meh" seasons in the NFL, only 1 as a full-time starter.
  17. 2005- Marques Slocum, OG (0.9853) Fuck Lion has zero on-field impact.
  18. 2007- Donovan Warren, (0.9845) So-so 3 year starter from 2007-09. Entered draft after JR year and went undrafted. Never made an NFL roster.
  19. 2002- Gabe Watson (0.9839) Okay interior DL at TSUN, was a 4th Rd pick of Cardinals in 2006. Spent 5 years in the NFL, mostly as a reserve DT making little impact.
That makes a 4/17 "hit rate" on 5* kids over the past 2 decades (you can argue maybe Shazor since he was a "Consensus AA" in 2004, but I do not remember him being that good) and 2 TBD. That is astounding incompetence.

Ernest Shazor was Josh Metellus version 1.0. I have no idea how that guy was a consensus All American.

You could argue that Shazor was the real turning point in the Rivalry.

2001 - a pretty bad Ohio State team won a highly emotional contest to preserve The Guarantee

2002 - a loaded Ohio State team barely beat a really good but not great Michigan team at home

2003 - Ohio State lost in near blow-out fashion

2004 - Ohio State enters The Game unranked with a 6-4 record, in the midst of a QB controversy, and coming off a really bad loss to Purdue. Michigan enters The Game with a 9-1 record, ranked #7 in the country, and has already clinched the Big Ten title and Rose Bowl berth. Michigan is heavily favored. Ohio State is a program on the verge of collapsing back into mediocrity. This is a game that Coop loses 38-13....

Fifth play of The Game. Buckeyes facing 3rd-and-12. No energy in The Shoe. Troy Smith drops back, scrambles. Anthony Gonzalez beats Ernest Shazor in single coverage. Smith connects with Gonzalez for a 68-yard touchdown (Gonzo's first career TD). And the rout is on in The Game, as Ohio State wins 37-21.

And the rout is on in The Rivalry, as Ohio State wins 15 out of 16, outscoring Michigan 583 to 360 (or 36.5 to 22.5 on a per game basis).

I tip my hat to you, Mr. Ernest Shazor, wherever you are. You were the start of it all.
