2020 Team Discussion Thread

My only concern with the offense next year is simply the letters "K" and "J" .

How much of the productivity lost from JK Dobbins and KJ Hill is effectively replaced? It isn't going to be 100% so how close can they come? Everything else is there offensively.

Not a knock on KJ, as his record breaking stats speak for him, but I think that’s a relatively minor worry when we have the talent we do in the WR room, on top of an insane WR class coming in.

JK Dobbins is a worry. Especially after seeing how ineffective and more importantly, how little trust OSU had in Teague. When Teague took field, it looked like Fields was given orders to “keep” on zone read. It wasn’t until it was clear Dobbins needed some time out of the game, that Teague got real touches.

The upside to me, is we saw what Master was capabale of in regular season, and I think Teague just wasn’t supposed to be a part of the gameplan in Fiesta Bowl.

Once he’s the featured back, I think we can expect much better productivity, especially against elite competition.

Not sure many people caught it, but something I was told after game was Dobbins was hurt prior to the ankle twist they referenced in telecast. On Teague’s first PT, in that drive, Teague was RB all the way into red zone. Day tends to let RB’s play entire drives, but there was a TO, plenty of time to rest, and Dobbins still didn’t get into game. They finally put Dobbins in, inside redzone, but it had been a prolonged absence. It sounds like the ankle injury happened prior to when most assume it did, and that particular play increased the pain/injury.

I know at the game I was wondering where the hell he was, for what felt like a very long stretch, and it was before he went back to the locker room for the re-taping. No idea how that coincided with telecast. I was at least spared the torture of listening to those two cocksmacks.

Agreed that the talent would seem to be there to more easily replace KJ than JK. I'm not sure about all this record setting 2020 offense talk if it turns out to be a more one dimensional team that relies on the QB to be the run threat. There are just all kinds of things not to like about that.

He had busted two long runs on back to back drives, and then he sat an entire drive essentially.

Certainly, he needed a breather, but the way they left him on bench for probably 10-12 mins of real time was odd. Especially when Teague was not utilized at all on that drive. Something happened......

But I think Teague can be very good in our scheme. Definitely more of a sledgehammer than a homerun threat. I’ll be honest, at a certain point this year, I actually liked Teague a bit more than Dobbins because of how physical he was running downhill. I like the Carlos Hyde comparison.

I think we will be fine at RB next year.....not a knock on Day or the coaching staff, but I do believe we had specific plays and an open playbook with Dobbins that shrank A LOT when Teague was RB. It “is what it is”. Just a very weird night.....

I think we will be fine at RB next year too. We also have to think our throw game will be even more lethal next year with a seasoned QB. You add that with a mobile QB and a road grating offensive line and we should have a ton of success on the ground.

We will just need to split the carries a bit more evenly next year.

Obviously the big concern is replacing our secondary. I think more importantly is replacing the guy coaching the guys replacing the guys in the secondary. I can't say enough about Hafley and what he did this year. Our DBs made Clemsons incredible wide outs look mediocre, especially before the Wade departure. That is no small task. LSU's DBs will not have the success our guys did. They made them look slow and made Lawrence look like a mediocre thrower. I didn't think that was possible, but Hafley had his boys ready and they did just that.

I hope Day can hit a second home run like Hafley who appeared to also recruit at a high level.

Going into the game, I was scared to death of Clemson's WRs but the boys put a hurtin' on them last Saturday.

I'd be ecstatic with 90%.

On Teague; It wasn't just Clemson. His last 4 games were underwhelming to say the least.

Not sure if there was an undisclosed injury or what the deal was but I don't think we're being honest with ourselves if we just write it off as a one game aberration.

Yeah, after I posted that I thought..."Well, 90% is quite a lot". We'll see. Already excited for the spring game.

I really don't see that being the case next year. A step back in the run game just takes them from the best power 5 rushing team to merely top 10. You can win a natty with that when you have one of the top 2 QB's in the country, possibly the best WR corps, and a top 5 OL. The offense will be outstanding. That defense though...? We'll see.

I'm frankly expecting a few losses next year. We have no one on the roster at RB who is remotely as talented as Dobbins. And a running threat is required for Fields to be optimally effective.
