2020-2021 College Basketball Discussion (Official Thread)

Division I transfers for all sports get blanket waiver from NCAA, can play immediately

The NCAA Division I Council voted Wednesday to grant a blanket waiver allowing all Division I transfers to play immediately this year.

The waiver covers all Division I sports, and the most immediate impact will be felt in men's college basketball, in which a number of notable players will be able to suit up immediately -- as soon as Wednesday night.

"We are thrilled at the passing of the blanket waiver, as we believe it is in line with D1 SAAC, ensuring that all of our student-athletes have the best opportunity to thrive both academically and athletically," said Caroline Lee, vice chair of the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. "In a time of great uncertainty amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, we feel it is in our best interest to grant immediate eligibility for those who have transferred in order to best support their mental health and well-being."

The NCAA was more lenient this cycle in granting waivers to traditional sit-out transfers in men's basketball, but several waiver requests were denied or were still in limbo.

Some of the top players who are now eligible include Memphis' DeAndre Williams, Butler's Bo Hodges, Xavier's Ben Stanley, Notre Dame's Trey Wertz and Creighton's Alex O'Connell. Miami and Pittsburgh face each other on Wednesday night, and both teams will get a boost from this news, as the Hurricanes' Elijah Olaniyi and the Panthers' Nike Sibande are now cleared to make their debuts.

MSU looks bad atm but I am not holding my breath on NW pulling this one out. I still think about how they massively choked away that game against MSU Holtmann's first year in the B1G that would have given OSU a share of the title. My least favorite memory from that season other than any of the 3 times we played PSU, lol.

Rutgers looked very legit against Illinois today, scored 1.24 PPP. That's gonna be a real tough one coming up.

Izzo always seems to have (allow?) a clunker.

But yeah, Wildcats have been known to blow these.

It's getting bad at UK. They are 1-5. Highly touted freshmen sitting the bench are getting upset. Their pets' heads are falling off.

Florida player just collapsed on the court of the UF/FSU game. Pre season SEC player of the year - Keyontae Johnson.

4 minutes into the game. They cut to commerical and came back.

why are they playing this game? Players visibly shaken.

Keyontae Johnson update: medically induced coma today. Gut-wrenching to think about.

Preseason conference player of the year. He had just finished an ally-oop. Awful for someone so young. Hope the doctors and kid pull through.

Florida Gators' Keyontae Johnson being released from hospital

Florida Gators forward Keyontae Johnson is being released from the hospital, his family said in a statement Tuesday.

In the statement, the Johnsons said they are looking "forward to spending Christmas together as a family."

Johnson collapsed and fell face-first while heading back onto the court after a first-half timeout during a game at Florida State on Dec. 12. He was given emergency medical attention and taken off the court on a stretcher before being rushed to Tallahassee Memorial.

While Johnson's recovery seems to be progressing, it still has not been said publicly what happened to him, something the Johnson family addressed Tuesday.
