2019 tOSU Offense (Official Thread)

If you don’t mind could you clarify a bit as to what this means? Is this the percentage of our yards that is gained via passing? Team completion %? Yards passed is the 67th percentile in the country?

Just curious. I don’t think I have an issue with our completion percentage because we throw downfield quite a bit but I would need to see air yards per completion to say that more confidently. Probably for a PFF account.

My concern is holding onto the ball too long. Day has specifically said that this is largely by design but we don’t know how true that is albeit I can’t tjink of a reason he’d lie other than to avoid criticizing Fields publicly.

Furthermore, assuming that by design is true, I’d like to see us utilize aome underneath routes or checkdown routes more often to combat an aggressive pass rush. Downfield routes and poor protection against heavy blitzes typically don’t be mix well especially with a quarterback that has a slower release like Fields. M

I’ve digressed a bit because I type as I think. For this, I apologize.
NorthCoastKid cleared this up for me He is right when he says Ohio State ranks 67th in the nation. Sorry that my post was way off base

In conference games, two B1G backs have averaged > 7 ypc

They’re both Buckeyes

Its crazy to think that a kid as talented as Demarrio McCall is our 4th string RB! Think of how many teams he’d be starting for or one of their top skill players.
And the only reason he's not 5th string is that the staff is sitting Chambers to not burn his redshirt.

So, through ten games, this offense is putting up similar total YPG numbers as what last season's squad finished with but doing it in totally different ways.

2018 - 535.7 total YPG (2nd nationally), 358.7 passing YPG (2nd nationally), 177.0 rushing YPG (55th nationally)

2019 - 541.7 total YPG (4th nationally), 254.3 passing YPG (45th nationally), 287.4 rushing YPG (4th nationally)

I'd say the attempt at greater balance this season has been wildly successful thus far. Major credit to Day and the offensive staff.

110% agreed. And the first-team offense is playing a whole lot less this year than last year. I would be really curious to know how many snaps Haskins had taken through 10 games compared to Fields.

THE 1-YARD LINE STUFF
As ridiculous as it is to consider, Ohio State's 35-point win on Saturday was arguably its least impressive victory of the season. Sure, the Buckeyes beat the Scarlet Knights soundly. Yet, they didn't impose their will on every single play, including a drive midway through the second quarter that ended with a turnover on downs.

On first-and-goal from the 7-yard line, J.K. Dobbins lost a pair of yards. The next play, he carried the ball eight yards to the 1-yard line. Ohio State handed the ball off to Dobbins on third and fourth down from one yard out, but he couldn't score on either opportunity.

Against Rutgers, getting stuffed at the 1-yard line didn't ultimately matter. It could when facing a better opponent, though.

Maybe the coaches called the wrong play and/or somebody missed an assignment/block. Regardless, this was bad, wouldn't you think that our OL could blow Rutgers' DL back one yard (i.e. on 3rd or 4th down)?
