On one hand it's annoying because all the legitimate backups left and there really is no other option, but on the other it's good to see him still motivating Fields as much as possible. Just hope Day is being really critical because he sees Fields' incredibly high ceiling, and not that Fields is really struggling.

The thing for me though is Fields seems like the type that would be even better once he realizes he has ownership of the position.

If I'm being 100% frank?

This is being done because Ryan wants to establish for the future how things will go. For example, if this was a dog fight between two 5 stars the last thing he'd want is a transfer in fall camp.

It's much worse than 'isn't Haskins' if Gunnar just got to OSU and is already outperforming Fields.

Either there's more to the story, or alarm bells are going off in the WHAC cause they're not competing for a B10 title, much less a NC, without above average QB play.

If we’re listening they have been telling us all spring and summer that the defense and running game will have to carry the new QB for the first half of the year.

That’s what I hope OSU fans will remember before they freak out.


But they won’t.

Or perhaps one of Fields’ biggest strengths, running the ball, is limited or completely taken away during practice and scrimmages and it brings him back to a more comparable level with guys who are decent QBs in a 7 on 7 setting but aren’t 1/3rd the athletes.

I also think Day is exaggerating to keep the guy working hard who literally had all of his competition transfer out before he stepped foot on the practice field.

Take it for what little it's worth right now. Day talk. Gotta motivate guys any way you can. I did read somewhere that Fields was hitting the WRs in stride and looked "smooth'. This is Day's "process".

Yeah the defense knows they can't touch Justin right now so it's essentially 11 on 10.

Yep. Which is how once Justin is able to run everything should open up. It's still a little off putting that Hoak could come in with little work and out perform him but then again Hoak is older and has more practice time in college.

Either way, I expect fields to start. I think we will run him a lot early along with the backs, we will focus on short routes like screen/swing routes and the crossing routes, and then as the year goes we will start going down field.

As much as folks think I overreact I would never boo a player so I hope for all our QB there's some patience. Especially coming from a player like Haskins.

That should be taken with the biggest grain of salt. I would hope that Hoak performs as good if not better, in a setting where they can't fully hit the QB, as he has been in a college system longer than Fields, who is still admittedly very raw, and still reminiscent of a young TP, who's still trying to learn to lead an offense more with his arm than his legs.
