Two-Minute Drill: Ryan Day Announces Quarterback, Captains

The 2019 Ohio State football team now has its leaders.

Monday, head coach Ryan Day announced that Justin Fields would be the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback.

He also introduced the 2019 OSU football captains.

Here are the highlights.

+ Seven captains were selected. Tuf Borland, Jordan Fuller, Jonathon Cooper, JK Dobbins, Chase Young, CJ Saunders, and KJ Hill.

+ Justin Fields has been named the starting quarterback “for the first game against Florida Atlantic.” All that really means is that Fields will be taking the first snap on Saturday and we’ll see where that goes.

+ Coming out of the first week, Fields wasn’t where he needed to be, but the days since he has really separated himself.

+ Going and getting Justin Fields wasn’t necessarily “the plan” for this year. Once Dwayne Haskins left, they had to get moving. They had a relationship with Fields and when he became available, they talked to him and there was a good fit. They’ve done a lot to piece that room together in a small amount of time. It’s hard to fix a room when you lose a guy like Haskins after his sophomore season.

+ Gunnar Hoak and Chris Chugunov are both accurate passers and have a good feel for the defense. They are more athletic than people think. If they play, they will tailor the offense more to what they do. Hoak right now is where Fields was coming out of the spring. There is no decision made on the backup quarterback right now.

+ When Day was named a starting quarterback it gave him a lot of confidence as a player.

+ Day will tell Fields that he can’t try to be Dwayne Haskins in game one or JT Barrett. He can only be himself.

+ The offense this year will be “very, very similar” to last year’s offense. Fields is stronger and faster and a better runner than Haskins, so some different packages will be emphasized.

+ A lot more than just throwing the ball goes into being the starting quarterback. They have to be in control of the offense and move the ball down the field. Fields graded out as a champion in the last scrimmage on Saturday.

+ Fields took the news in stride. He doesn’t get too high or too low. He envisioned himself as the starter.

+ Fields has been much better with his reads and his eyes and where he is going with the football. They have cleaned up his mechanics. He has gotten more accurate over the last two weeks.

+ There is still a battle going on at right tackle. Branden Bowen and Nick Petit-Frere will both play. They deserve it.

+It’s hard to say what the expectations should be for Fields. They’re “almost ridiculous.” But it’s a lot like being the head coach at Ohio State. “This is what you signed up for.”

+ The good news for Justin Fields is he has played in big-time college football, but that’s a lot different than running a team.

+ Day doesn’t want Fields taking a bunch of hits in a game, so his number of carries will be calculated. You have to be smart with him. He runs with the ball very well, but you can pick and choose the kind of runs he can manage. Kyler Murray did a great job of that last year.

+ There were 10-12 champions on both sides of the ball during Saturday’s scrimmage. JK Dobbins has really run hard in this camp. He is playing with speed. Defense is running to the ball and creating turnovers. The defensive line is penetrating. “We’re still working to get tough. That’s a daily process.”

+ Day met with the QBs individually last week and then met with them as a group today to tell them who the starter was.

+ Not sure who the No. 2 RB is right now. Demario McCall has had a good camp. When Master Teague practices, he looks good, but he’s been limited. The two freshmen are running hard. McCall might have the leg up right now. All of them could play.

+ You could see a lot of offensive linemen play this season. They are going to try to play depth at a lot of positions. If they deserve to play, we’re going to play them.

+ Why seven captains? The votes were strong for these seven and then there was a gap for 8, 9, and 10.

+ It’s an unbelievable example to have CJ Saunders begin his career as a walk-on and become a scholarship captain who hasn’t played a whole bunch. It says a lot about the team that they voted him a captain.

+ Captains were announced this morning and he called all seven guys up to the front of the room.

+ Fields does have leadership skills. You can’t just bang the door down on day one. He has earned the respect of his teammates and will be a good leader as the season goes on.

+ During games Kevin Wilson and Mike Yurcich will be upstairs. Matt Barnes will probably be upstairs. Jeff Hafley wants to be upstairs. They are still working on where the rest of the defensive staff will be during games.

+ Penalties have been a huge focus this camp. Players have to run a lap when they commit a penalty. The pre-snap stuff has to get better. Penalties due to effort is one thing. Penalties like false starts are unacceptable.

+ Day is pleased with the health of his team.

Easily one of the best hype videos I've ever seen.
the best hype video is the one below for ttun's 2017 season. what better way to get psyched up than to watch a slow, painstaking dissection of 2016's season-ending failures. it really was the most fitting video, though, since ttun started 2017 at #11 (and #9 in the coaches) before finishing unranked.

2019 SEASON PREVIEW: THE 10 BIGGEST QUESTIONS SURROUNDING OHIO STATE

106076_h.jpg

Ohio State no longer has Urban Meyer, one of the most successful head coaches in college football history, and it doesn't have Dwayne Haskins, who produced the most prolific passing season in program history last year.

Yet, the expectations at Ohio State remain as high as ever.

With less than a week until the Buckeyes kick off their game against Florida Atlantic at noon on Saturday, we wrap up the Eleven Warriors Season Preview with a look at the 10 biggest remaining questions that will determine the fate of the 2019 season.

IS JUSTIN FIELDS A CHAMPIONSHIP-LEVEL QUARTERBACK AS A FIRST-YEAR STARTER?
It would be difficult to doubt Fields' long-term potential.

He'll be the top-rated recruit to ever play for Ohio State and was the No. 2 overall prospect in the class of 2018. Fields beat Trevor Lawrence, among other quarterbacks, to win the Elite 11 MVP two years ago, and he pairs that throwing ability with a 6-foot-3, 223-pound frame and speed to run the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds or less.

Still, expectations have been kept in check because he has never started a game and transferred to Ohio State in January, giving him less than a year to learn Ryan Day's offensive system.

Though Fields' natural gifts are obvious when watching him, he might need time to become the quarterback Day envisioned when he landed him. How quickly he develops could determine whether or not the Buckeyes reach their potential in 2019.

CAN J.K. DOBBINS HAVE HIS DESIRED REBOUND SEASON?
The numbers tell the story of Dobbins' two years.
  • 2017: 194 carries, 1,403 rushing yards, 7.2 yards per carry, 7 rushing touchdowns
  • 2018: 230 carries, 1,053 rushing yards, 4.6 yards per carry, 10 rushing touchdowns
Dobbins characterized his sophomore season as a "failure," which is a harsh way to describe a year in which he cracked 1,000 rushing yards for the second time. But he undoubtedly didn't produce at the level he did as a true freshman.

Now leading a backfield without a true No. 2 running back, Dobbins has to perform at the level he did in 2018. He seems to have taken the right steps, dropping from 12 percent to 8 percent body fat and showing enough leadership to become a team captain. But now he'll have to translate that into results on a team that needs him at his best, especially in the early portion of the season as Fields eases into his first year as a starting quarterback.

He has high goals, too.

“I just feel like I'm the best running back in the nation and I want to prove that, and I didn't last year,” Dobbins said. “And I have a chip on my shoulder because I know I can do better.”

DOES OHIO STATE HAVE ENOUGH DEPTH AT QUARTERBACK AND RUNNING BACK TO GET BY?

When Day finally announced what everybody already knew, that Fields will start at quarterback, he didn't name a backup quarterback. Why? Because the battle between Gunnar Hoak and Chris Chugunov was closer than the supposed competition featuring Fields and Hoak.

That could be taken as a sign that Fields has ingratiated himself as part of the offense quicker than possible. But more than likely it also means Hoak didn't blow everybody away with his performance in camp. Chugunov, who transferred from West Virginia last offseason, wasn't brought in with an expectation of playing a meaningful snap for the Buckeyes. Yet he might find himself second on the depth chart next week.

Without sugarcoating anything, that's a serious problem.

The Buckeyes also spent the entirety of preseason camp searching for a backup running back. It appears Demario McCall likely won the job, but he did so in part because Master Teague got injured and the only other candidates are true freshmen who have never played a snap. He might have performed well in practice, but he didn't face a particularly staunch field.

If Ohio State has its way, the team will never have to play its backup quarterback in non-blowout snaps and it won't need to rely heavily on a non-Dobbins running back. But unexpected scenarios tend to pop up, which could test the Buckeyes.

SKULL SESSION: URBAN MEYER NOT A FAN OF THE TRANSFER PORTAL, WHAT HISTORY SAYS ABOUT THE BUCKEYES THIS SEASON, AND LANE KIFFIN PRAISES JUSTIN FIELDS

NOT UNCHARTED.
Replacing a hall of fame head coach and a starting quarterback quarterback in the same offseason and is still starting the season as a top-five team sounds seems like a pretty rare situation.

It's not entirely unique, but the youngest person on Earth alive that was alive to see it last time is now old enough to legally consume alcohol.

That was also Frank Solich's debut season as a head coach. He was promoted from an assistant coach – like Ryan Day – after Nebraska became the one-true 1997 national champion and Tom Osborne rode off into the sunset.

That's not exactly a great omen.

That team went 9-4. If Ryan Day goes 9-4 this season, folks will be burning him in effigy in front of Gene Smith's office. If you don't believe me, you clearly don't spend enough time online.

Nebraska also used three quarterbacks that season (again, the WHAC would be razed), but one of them went on to win the Heisman Trophy three season's later. So I guess if – God forbid – this is history completely repeating itself, congrats on the 2022 Heisman Trophy, Justin Fields!

FRESHWATER FIELDS. As if Florida Atlantic's revolving door defense weren't welcoming enough for Justin Fields, Lane Kiffin is actually quite practiced at breaking in five-star dual-threat quarterbacks in their first start – he graciously gave Heisman winner Kyler Murray his first W last season.

From Jake Elman of the Palm Beach Post:

... At this time a year ago, Kiffin needed to prepare his team for Murray, a former top recruit who began his career at Texas A&M but entered 2018 with only 21 throws in a Sooners uniform.

Now, Kiffin is preparing his team for Fields, a sophomore who threw 39 passes at Georgia last year and then joined Ohio State in the offseason.

“They’re like that as far as being from another school without a ton of film, but very different players, obviously, just based off of size,” Kiffin said Sunday.

...

He can do it all,” Kiffin said of Fields. “He can throw and he can run; he can give you a lot of issues.”

Fields threw for 328 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions at Georgia last year. He also ran for 266 yards and four touchdowns on 42 carries.

Kyler Murray went 9-for-11 for 209 yards and two touchdowns before handing the sticks over to Ohio State fan-favorite Austin Kendall to cap off the 63-14 massacre.

It's crazy that Kiffin has to start the season against the eventual Heisman Trophy winner for the second-straight year. But the good news is FAU opens at Minnesota next year, so he'll get a little respite there, unless that boat gets rowing real quick.
