Downtown is getting a little deeper.

The Division I men's college three-point arc will be extended to the international basketball distance beginning this 2019-20 hoops season, the NCAA announced on Wednesday.

The new three-point stripe will be about a foot-and-a-half further, moving from 20 feet, 9 inches to 22 feet, 1¾ inches this season. The move comes after the NCAA's Men's Basketball Rules Committee received positive feedback from coaches participating in last year's NIT, which used the international line fo the first time.

The committee outlined three reasons for the change:

  • Making the lane more available for dribble/drive plays from the perimeter.
  • Slowing the trend of the 3-point shot becoming too prevalent in men’s college basketball by making the shot a bit more challenging, while at the same time keeping the shot an integral part of the game.
  • Assisting in offensive spacing by requiring the defense to cover more of the court.
Last month, Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann told Joe Scalzo of the Canton Rep that he "would be shocked" if the three-point line was not moved back to the international distance for the upcoming season and that the Buckeyes were already preparing for the longer shooting distance.

“If they moved it back to half-court, our guys would think they could make it,” Holtmann joked to Scalzo, “so I think we’re gonna be in good shape.”

The changes in shooting percentages figure to be slight. Participants in this year's NIT shot 33 percent from beyond the arc compared to the 35.8 percent season average. The last time the three-point line was moved ahead of the 2008-09 season, three-point percentages fell from 35.2 percent to 34.4 percent.

The NCAA also approved resetting the shot clock to 20 seconds after an offensive rebound of a shot that hits the rim instead of the full 30 seconds.

listening to ho1tmann's presser...

1. coach hinted at the wesson camp knowing what the end result of the nba tryouts would be.

2. the b1g-acc lineup should be announced thursday or friday.

3. major takeaway from wesson's tryouts: improve strength/conditioning/explosiveness/feet.

4. beyond athleticism issues, kaleb was advised to be a better outside shooter and finisher.

5. coaches have free rein over scheduling.

6. before gavitt games announced, expectation was that it would be villanova. otherwise creighton or providence. didn't sound like not being included was a consideration

7. beilein told ho1tmann not too long ago that he would have taken pistons job last year had it been offered.

8. coaches still don't know what they have with diallo.

9. safe to say, ho1tmann is not a fan of twitter, instagram, facebook, etc. negative impact on player psyche.

10. expect osu to have at least one sit-one transfer most seasons. appreciates the stabilizing effect that counters the volatility of attrition.

11. preseason scrimmage opponent yet to be determined. sounds like they want a really good opponent due to schedule strength.

Ohio State will head on the road this fall to take on North Carolina on Dec. 4 as part of the annual ACC-Big Ten challenge, which pits every team in each conference up for an early season game.

In the non-conference portion of the Buckeyes' 2019-20 schedule, Chris Holtmann has put together a tough test for a young team that will feature seven underclassmen, including four freshmen.

Ohio State will open the season at home against Cincinnati in the second year of the home-and-home series, and it also will host Villanova as part of the Gavitt Games. It'll travel to Las Vegas to take on Kentucky, and it'll face West Virginia in Cleveland on Dec. 29.

It is a tough nonconference schedule.

These guys are definitely going to have opportunities to make noise between playing UK and UNC. I would say from a talent standpoint UK is going to be the toughest opponent for OSU on the season as a whole. UNC might be 3rd behind MSU.
nova will be up there, too, from an on-paper talent standpoint. they add two 5-stars and two upper 4-stars to a roster that returns a handful of 4-stars. their 4-player 2019 class is second only to duke per average player ranking. of course, the big difference is that uk's returning roster is already chock full of 5-star after 5-star. calipari's top 10 players might have the highest collective recruiting ranking of any opponent that osu has ever faced, especially if you label sestina a high 4-star.

probably goes something like...

1. uk
(sizable gap)
2. unc
3. msu
4. nova
5. md

iu/ui/purdue/ttun/wvu/etc.
