2019-2020 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

Cumberland is returning to UC for his senior season. Big news for the Bearcats, as they were going to be trash without him. Now they are at least going to be a semi-decent nonconference opponent for OSU.
this is triply big because 1) uc returns their top player, 2) uc probably gets jarron's cousin, jaevin, to join as a transfer, and 3) ttun does not get jaevin, which they were hoping/expecting to. at 17 points, 83% from the line, and 40% from three, jaevin was a big-time scorer at oakland and would probably walk right in to a starting spot as ttun's 2-guard.

OHIO STATE TO HOST VILLANOVA FOR 2019 GAVITT GAMES, PER REPORT

Ohio State's non-conference slate just got a little more loaded.

The Buckeyes will host Villanova as part of the 2019 Gavitt Games in an early-season test, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.

The Gavitt Games are an annual early-season showdown between the Big Ten and the Big East. Each year, eight games are played on teams' home courts, with each conference hosting four games.

Villanova is a big name, the biggest in the Big East. They were on the short list of 4 Big East teams that I was hoping for OSU to draw, but they have the most question-marks, probably the lowest floor of the top-4 projected Big East teams. Nova could end up the best of the Big East if the recruits pan out in a big way. I am gonna guess NIT for Nova, and hope they prove me wrong.

I am gonna guess NIT for Nova...
booth and paschall are solid losses, but nova returns and certainly gains enough that they should definitely be a tournament team. one thing to consider here is that the big east does not project to be terribly strong. look at last season. nova's non-conference performance was unexceptional, but their league was weak. they racked up enough wins sufficient for a 6-seed. while the big east should be better next season, which isn't asking all that much, no other team looks demonstrably better than nova... especially if seton hall's powell doesn't return.

in addition to all of that, nova's recruiting class is crazy good. only duke's class is higher per average player ranking. not too many 4-player classes averaging 98.5+ have been added to a team that ultimately didn't make the tournament. the talent will be too strong for wright to have only his 2nd team in the last 16 seasons miss the tournament. history is no doubt on wright's side.

Ho hum, Kentucky will be good at basketball again next year.

at least montgomery's return should diminish uk's chances of getting blackshear, whom most would consider a (much) better post player. had montgomery stayed in the draft and had blackshear pulled his name (decision still impending) with the intent to transfer, i can't imagine that blackshear would go anywhere else but uk.

I think that opener against UC is going to be fairly tough now. They've upgraded both their coach and their roster.
jarron, jaevin, williams, and mcneal should present a solid backcourt. after scott, though, there are some major question marks in the frontcourt. and it's not as though scott is big enough to body up kaleb. i think kaleb, liddell, and gaffney will have big games. the latter two should be able to feast as kaleb draws attention.
