2019-2020 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

yeah. seems pretty fair overall. the only thing i'd really want to change is the home-only game versus msu.
You mean road only, but yes if OSU was having thoughts of competing for the B1G title, having only one game and the one game a road game being the only chance vs MSU is a big negative.

I also renew my amusement that the B1G schedule makers find a way to get OSU in Bloomington again, in spite of having only a road game with them last year and by my count road games there every season since 2008 except for 2017, missing them in Columbus in 3 of those years 2014, 16 and 19.

johnny juzang (5*) has reclassified to 2019. commitment to kentucky is impending. so it looks like we'll play in december a team that lost a lot but also gains a lot of talent, as is always the case with the wildcats.

hagans (returning 5* starter)
quickley (returning 5* back-up)
maxey (5*)
juzang (5*)
allen (4*)
whitney (5*)
brooks (5*)
sestina (one of top transfers)

players who will stay in draft: johnson, washington, and herro
players possibly/likely to return - richards (5* back-up) and montgomery (5* back-up)
transfer to watch: blackshear (6* stud)

initially posted this in the recruiting forum, but since the players are no longer recruits...

-

fwiw, not the composite ranking:

carton -7
liddell +6
gaffney -14
diallo -44

seems fair, though i'd have liddell inside 50th. if carton had a better outside game (or at least a better mid-range game) and if gaffney were more consistent along with more heft, both would be ranked higher. diallo is a pure project, so his ranking is whatever.

btw, watched the laughable ballislife all-american game that was held on saturday. much worse than the jordan brand classic, which was actually somewhat decent in the second half -- at least as all-star games go.

not much to say about carton and liddell other than i'll be pleased if either shoots over 30% from behind the arc next season. also, liddell loves to compete no matter the setting. pretty much the only guy out there who looked like he wanted to play some real basketball. most guys were given free lanes to the basket once past the first level. ej wasn't having any of that in the first half, though. he swatted 3 shots by halftime (including the first attempt of the game) when players thought they had opportunities for the highlight reel.

i hope liddell makes it through next season without anything more than a minor injury. he'll be selling out his body every game as our interior enforcer. the guy doesn't know how to downshift.

edit: and carton's top two weapons next year are going to be 1) the drive-and-finish and 2) the kick-out. really like how the pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop project with him and kaleb/gaffney/liddell. just need for our shooting guards and small forwards to be competent 3-point shooters. this is where ahrens and washington can shine.

uc's nysier brooks just announced that he's made the final decision that he's not going to return (sit one, play one). so if cumberland stays gone as expected, the bearcats will be in for quite a challenging season. they'll have lost 4 of the top 6 scorers, which includes 3 players who started every game. and on top of all of that, they just lost their only 2019 commitment in samari curtis and they currently don't have any incoming transfers. they need to add more players, and they need to do that yesterday.

good luck, john brannen. hope you enjoy your opening game in columbus.

kentucky it is for juzang. just a huge game for osu in december.

edit: uk's also assumed to get 5* jaden mcdaniels, which would mean their recruiting class would consist of 5 players in the top 35 and another 4*.

https://www.buckeyextra.com/sports/...is-holtmann-talks-kyle-young-in-canton-speech
Holtmann indicated that the Buckeyes would be hosting a Big East school as part of the Gavitt Games and that they will play on the road as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge but said he’s not yet sure about the opponents. Otherwise, he said, the schedule is mostly complete. It includes a game in Cleveland against West Virginia and coach Bob Huggins, who spoke to the same group the week prior.

“I love Bob,” Holtmann said. “I don’t know coach Huggins great, but man, what a tremendous coach. It’s another game we talked about would be fun to play, and it’s up in Cleveland. It’s just another one of those games we’re trying to do to continue to generate enthusiasm and excitement. They’ll be very good this year. I know that with him. He’s too good a coach.”

osu will probably play in the gavitt games (b1g versus big east). though there are only 8 games, osu has played in the challenge only twice while 6 b1g teams have played in it 3 of 4 times. msu has never played in it and probably won't this year. if we do play in the gavitt games, i'm sure the administration will push for a home game. facing villanova, marquette, or seton hall in columbus will be pretty sweet since those teams will almost certainly start the season ranked. butler or xavier in columbus would also be cool for obvious reasons, but neither will be ranked going into the season.
I see no reason to conclude a Gavitt game is probable. It is 50-50 every year based on ratio of games to teams. Of course, MSU is out of it every year, but there are 4 years of the event left, and most likely OSU will play one of the games in 2 of the 4 years. Based on OSU participating in the event last season, I feel the odds are the Buckeyes will not be participating this season.
like i said, it's probable because osu has played in only two games while 6 b1g teams have played in three games. i'm not saying osu will absolutely 100% play in the challenge, but i'd still put the odds at over 50-50... which is another way of saying "probably."
