So while everyone has an opinion, nobody truly knows a team better than the players on its roster. With that in mind, The Dispatch is continuing its annual tradition of polling as many current Ohio State players as possible for their thoughts on this year’s team. In exchange for anonymity, players are asked to vote for the best shooter, dunker and dresser on the roster.
A reminder: Only players who have already suited up to play college basketball are permitted to speak with reporters, meaning the team’s four freshmen were not included in the poll. Also, multiple players split their votes in single categories. Due to that, plus rounding numbers, totals might not exactly add up to 100 percent. Also, players were permitted to vote for themselves.

not having antoine would be a substantial blow to villanova's chances against osu in columbus. he's good enough that he'd have a real shot at being nova's leading scorer this season. it should still be a good game even if antoine does not play us, but i'm definitely giving the odds to the buckeyes here. wright's team will have very little depth in the backcourt, though their 3/4/5 looks to be stout.
uc looks to be the flip side of nova. bearcats project to have solid backcourt depth and talent with very limited interior depth. after tre scott, there just isn't much inside that should be a concern for osu.Yeah, I really like OSU vs Nova. UC I think will prove to be the tougher matchup for early November.
And guess what? OSU plays their exhibition game exactly 2 weeks from today.
more about Walker and Carton and what they will do for team atIt only took a couple of practices this fall for Chris Holtmann to recognize the difference at point guard.
No longer did he have C.J. Jackson and Keyshawn Woods in the backcourt. Instead, he has DJ Carton and CJ Walker.
The hotshot freshman and the Florida State transfer. The top-35 overall recruit and the fourth-year junior with Elite Eight experience. The Iowan who picked the Buckeyes over other Big Ten powers and the veteran who already has a year of learning the Ohio State system under his belt.
“I think that position, it's exciting to us because we have some experience, obviously, in CJ Walker and in DJ Carton, a young guy who is really gifted,” Holtmann said last week at Big Ten media day. “We'll play those two together, as well. So we don't always look at it as an either-or situation. I think there will definitely be times when they play together.”
Walker ran with the scout team last year as he sat out following his transfer from Tallahassee to Columbus, so Holtmann’s coaching staff already has a grasp on what a team run by him would look like. Carton enrolled this summer and is currently going through his first college preseason camp.
Together, they’re a pair of prototypical point guards the Buckeyes didn't have a season ago.
“I think the pace of play with our point guards, they've provided some things for us that are just a little bit different in terms of their ability to get from zero to 60, and we need that,” Holtmann said last week at Big Ten media day. “I think we need to be able to touch the paint and threaten the paint more than what we did last year.”

Sophomore wing Justin Ahrens and freshman forward E.J. Liddell are both participating in practice, coach Chris Holtmann told The Dispatch on Sunday afternoon while making an appearance at the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Clinic at Grandview High School. Junior wing Musa Jallow, however, remains sidelined.
Ahrens missed most of the summer with a back injury suffered while weightlifting and is back but “he’s not at full strength,” Holtmann said.
Liddell, expected to assume a significant role as a scorer on this year’s team, is likewise working himself into better shape after missing a few weeks with an undisclosed lower-leg injury. Jallow, too, is dealing with an undisclosed lower-leg injury believed to be affecting his ankle. He is expected to take on more of a leadership role this season.
