I do think MSU might miss Goins more than expected. He was the perfect fourth or fifth scorer at forward, capable of hitting for 15+ any game if the opponent was not guarding him closely, able to stretch the D from 3, and he stuffed the stat sheet. Really shined in some big moments as well. I am not saying I expect MSU to play poorly by any stretch, but they might not be quite as good this season as last year.

IT always takes some time to replace key cogs that have been in the rotation for 3-4 years. They are replacing Ward, Goins and McQuaid. Individually you might not think any one guy is that difficult to replace as they have guys that look capable of stepping in, but thats a lot of experience that is gone. On paper, they should be able to fill those departures with at least similar, if not better talent (returning Langford, improved Tillman and Brown), but they have to create their own style without those other 3 guys and its not going to be exactly the same and sometimes, the sum of the parts is more important that the total value of the part individually.

Don't get me wrong, I think MSU has a really good team that is the clear favorite to win the B1G, but I think they have to grow into that team and can't just roll the ball out there and win on talent alone.

Andre Curbelo is one of the best PGs in the whole 2020 class and he just committed to Illinois.

Hate to say it (not a fan of Illinois fans, heh) but I think Underwood has them on the path back to B1G contention.
definitely agree on both parts. underwood's recruiting has been quite good. give the program enough time to adapt to his system and they'll be a very tough out.

kofi should help a lot this year as being the interior force that won't allow opposing free looks at the basket once past the harassing perimeter defense, which is what plagued them last year. not sure how well kofi and giorgi will mesh on the court at the same time, though. good thing kaleb has worked so much on his mobility and outside shot. last year's kaleb would have a hard time facing kofi.

curbelo, zed key's high school teammate, is a very good point guard who should address the drop-off up top when ayo departs after this season. looks like a guy who can plug and play right off the bat as a true freshman.
