2018 Week 14 CFB Open Thread

I get it. I don't think you are wrong on the 8 team thing. I am just thinking (and hoping) they put in an out that would let them put in a Clemson over a Pitt for example.

maybe...Clemson would almost certainly be a wild card if they happen to lose....

the other thing you would see is home playoff games in the 1st round for the higher seeded team. The potential visual of Florida in Columbus in December is hilarious

Please no. Guarantee the highest ranked teams from X conferences, but no one wants another 4 or 5 loss team like we had a few times in BCS.

If Northwestern wins tonight you'll get that in the Rose Bowl this season. That had nothing to do with the BCS and everything to do with bowl tie-ins.

The BCS was just about picking the top 2 teams.

Not necessarily. Even with 8 teams you still have to win your conference. I'd bet they also guarantee the highest ranked Group of 5 conference champion a spot within the CFP too. My guess is they would almost certainly require a conference championship to get the automatic berth.

there is an easy way to deny, say, a 4-loss conference champion from receiving a playoff spot: just institute a qualifier.

for example, if you are a conference champion and are ranked at least nth place, you receive a playoff spot. however, if you are a conference champion but are ranked below nth place, your playoff spot instead goes to the highest ranked at-large team that qualifies.

Yeah, I wouldn't want conference champs to automatically get a playoff spot because with divisions you don't necessarily have the 2 best teams in the conference playing each other. But when you have 5 power conferences, and independents, and only 4 playoff spots you're going to have years where one or two conference champs go 12-1 and get left out. The hair-splitting required to make those choices is entirely subjective.

Ever see the attendance at a first round playoff game in the FCS?

Seriously, it's a really dumb idea. It will happen, and you won't be satisfied. You'll find yourself clamoring for a 16 team playoff the first time OSU is ranked 9-12 to end the season.
You said it is the FCS....their attendance is never going to match Division One anyway. If Two SEC teams get in again you will see 8 teams sooner than later.
