2018 tOSU Offense Discussion

I said before the season that the unit I was most worried about was the O Line. Considering that, I am VERY pleased with what I have seen so far. But I realize the competition level. Saturday will be a big test.

A lot has been said about the '14 season and how shocking the improvement was from the V Tech loss. That's very true.

If the O Line (and the 2nd and 3rd levels of the defense) can make that kind of progress this team will be hard to beat. From what I have seen so far from the O Line they have some dog in them. Saturday will be a chance to see what kind of bite they have. I'm really hoping to see them take the game over. As long as we win the game, that's more important to me than the final score. Big wins are nice but I want to see the O Line just control the game start to finish.

Wouldn’t a big win mean that the OL controlled the game?

They'd be right... now Im just hoping we don't lose a few Juniors next season.
Hill and Mack are serious possibilities, but imo Victor gets lost in the shuffle this year and comes back. Him, and Hartline coaching up guys like Harris, Olave, And Babb certainly helps(and the wildcard is 5star Garrett Wilson who could be a pleasant surprise). Not to mention having yet another year of Ruckert to go with Farrell and Hausman(if they stick and stay). I’m actually feeling quite confident in the WRs now with Hartline at the helm.

That is the battle I am most anxious to see, as TCU's front 7 will definitely be a huge test and the OL's first real challenge. They have looked great thus far, but the competition level appeared pretty poor. That being said, I am glad the OL got the chance to have a couple games to mesh against Oregon State and Rutgers before having to face TCU. To me, the OL's pass blocking is the biggest key on Saturday. I think we will open up running lanes just fine, but they need to give Haskins a little time. If he has time, I have no doubt that he and the Zone 6 will light it up as they have been.

QB's were a combined 30-33 and the WR's, TE's and Backs were all making sure handed "hands" catches.....all this in a steady rain.....me like

The bolded is exactly what I was thinking on Saturday. Seemed like every time it rained in the last 3-4 years, JT's performance would dip substantially. And having played in the rain a number of times myself, I have to admit it would definitely effect my performance. For those groups to put up those types of numbers in those conditions is nothing short of remarkable.

Rutgers' front seven had flashes of brilliance Saturday...I don't think they're as bad as many think they are and may be provided a better preparation for TCU than we might think.

All game long I was thinking that Rutgers' defense has been improved substantially by Ash, but the results did not show on the field because the Ohio State offense has gone from very good to extremely ridiculous.

Ohio State Football Notebook: ‘If you go at lunchtime it’s not expensive’

An Impressive Debut

In two games as Ohio State’s acting head coach, Ryan Day has produced a record-breaking Buckeye offense thanks in large part to a dynamic quarterback, talented running backs, a deep group of receivers, and a big ol’ talented offensive line.

The numbers are ridiculous — 350 yards passing per game and 300 yards rushing per game, and the 64.5 points per game the Buckeyes are scoring this season aren’t bad either.

The Ohio State quarterbacks are completing over 80% of their passes and the running backs are averaging over six yards per carry.

Also, 10 different Buckeyes have reached the end zone on offense.

In other words, the Ohio State offense has been very impressive so far. But what has been the most impressive aspect for Day?

“Probably our depth and just talent overall,” he said. “You know, you look all across the board, we’re pretty deep. A lot of playmakers. So when you get the ball to those guys in space and you can stretch the ball vertically and horizontally, you can really be explosive.

“That matched with the tempo and our ability to protect right now is good. Dwayne and Tate [Martell], they have a lot of time and can set their feet, so their rhythm has been good.”

That very well may be. Always tough to tell at the beginning of the year. I know Rutgers had a much better defensive front than Oregon State, that's for sure.
