2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

Just heard on 97.1 that an anonymous coordinator in the Big Ten had some commentary on our Buckeyes.

They mentioned that our defensive backs are nowhere near what they have been in the past (which strangely I said this morning before hearing about this) and that our safeties are very stiff. Kind of insinuating that what we are asking them to do is out of their capabilities.

Also mentioned that our offense now compared to the first three games is completely different. That Urban Meyer has probably been inserting himself into the offense of game planning.

James Laurinaitis mentioned he doesn't think this is the case but I have to disagree. Our offense was much different in my opinion the first 3 weeks and I also think we don't have the horses to play the system we want to.

Possibly the worst tackling DBs and LBs I’ve ever witnessed. There may be some scheme issues, but watching the Purdue game, if the players were just average at tackling the outcome would have been different.
2012 and 2013 were worse, IMO. That was when the DBs went for the big hit on every play rather than tackle, and often just bounced off the ball carrier.

Well its really simple really... will we be stubborn or will we start tweeking the systems to suite our players needs?

I dont think it has anything to do with people not liking Ohio State... They readily admitt we have talent but its just not working.

More or less I take it that they think UFM is overrated because he lacks the ability to tailor our system to what we have.

The "Power 5 head coach" title thrown in there to give the article more weight. They (who, I'm sure are direct competitors for recruits) literally could've pulled these very basic, opinionated quotes from any message board.

Reminds me why I'm spending less and less time paying attention to the entire sports world. These articles, sources, contradictions, and hyperbole have become so tiresome.

The fact that these quotes are even making the rounds and fans take them as "scathing" or "damning" is crazy.

Well I'd love to know what specifically is different about our play calling since Urban got back because, to my untrained eye, it looks the same as it did the first three games. I think people forget that we didn't score an offensive TD in the TCU game until 3rd quarter.

Ding ding ding.

The issue isn't what's changed...it's actually NOT changing what hasn't worked.

And to think, that specific article is behind a paywall. People pay for that.

COACH'S SHOW RECAP: URBAN MEYER AND KEVIN WILSON TALK THE LOSS TO PURDUE, RED ZONE STRUGGLES AND TIGHT END DEVELOPMENT

ON YOUNG CORNERS READY TO STEP UP

  • Meyer said Cam Brown was coming before his injury.
  • Sevyn Banks and Tyreke Johnson are next up after Brown.
  • Meyer said Shaun Wade has a corner skillset, but we're trying to get him ready to play safety."
ON MALIK HARRISON
  • "You can't see the ceiling of his potential"
  • Meyer said he just has to play loose.
  • Wilson said he thinks all good offenses have good rhythm.
GREG SCHIANO

Defensive coordinator Greg Schiano made a brief appearance towards the end of the show, discussing how Ohio State's secondary played against Purdue.
  • Schiano said the Buckeyes tried to double-team Rondale Moore, "but he's a good player."
  • Shiano said Shaun Wade, who was matched up against Moore most of the game, actually did a good job even though Moore did beat him a few times.
  • "The competition at the safety spot alongside Jordan Fuller hasn't been settled yet. That isn't a good thing in Week 9," Schiano said.
