2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

He was watching the Nebraska game with Kevin Kugler on Saturday. The question is - WHAT defensive coaches were texting him?!?

You guys have other issues other than defense, though. I can't put my finger on it, but the D was doing well until that 99 yard drive.

Where in the hell did your special teams go? ST hurt you in that game. Two penalties on punts?!? A fake field goal? Hill fielding a punt at the six???

Never seen that in all the years I've been watching the Buckeyes. That was kind of the dam breaking and it got worse after that.

EDIT: Rewatching highlights. It was 14 - 6 until that roughing the punter penalty. They got the ball back, scored. Wheels fell off at that point.

Also - THREE DROPPED TDs by receivers. Ouch.
That's just the typical special teams fuckery that happens once a year. STs has actually been the lone consistent bright spot until that game.

2016 Penn State is still the worst STs I've ever seen though. Never seen an OSU Special Team give away the game like they did that year.

Hey, i'm scared. You guys have a bye, then it's us coming to the Shoe.
That's like kicking a hornet's nest multiple times, walking away, then pushing a relative into the nest.
Take heart, you could be the N-W on this list!

Margin of victory after a loss:

#12 MSU 45
N-R Army 31
N-R Ind. 28
N-R NW 4
#10 U-M 29
N-R KSU 66

Which averages out to 5 TDs per game, and that average is pretty similar if you remove the two outliers.

When you have a lineman ripped out of the LOS to lower the chances of an identical leaping penalty (like the last OSU @ PSU ending), things go sideways.

It's obviously not breaking news considering we've watched this defense all year but it's pretty alarming when you see someone like Chad Peltier list how every week we let a player have a career game against us
Used to think this was just selection bias having watched more Buckeye games than any other team, obviously. Interesting to see a stat on it this year.

Type of stuff that makes you wonder what exactly the coaches are doing during the week. But, it's pretty clear OSU's philosophy and scheme stays 90% the same week-to-week, while opposing coaches know exactly what to expect and exploit.

They did do a nice job switching it up with exactly what I thought they would do- shading Shaun Wade on Moore...except for all the times they didn't. Seemed like every time they went away from that and let Moore release inside against a LB was a predictable disaster.

I really like Schiano's man-press coverage, despite some PI's or great catches, I will take lining up the Buckeye CB's against 99% of teams. The rest of what this defense does up the middle is a disaster.

I seem to remember a 2014 team that couldn’t stop a power running team all year and then stuffed Wisky and their 2k back...and played lights out against Oregon.

These forums always sound like everyone here only lived through the Cooper era.

I’m honestly bewildered by the entire mess. It’s a comfortable place since I did live through the Cooper era.

I’m keeping my trap shut and crossing my fingers we somehow finish strong.

I’m not suggesting that the discussion should stop, but I think that most of the issues and potential solutions are documented far better than I could.

I just want to beat both *ichigan schools and win in Indy in December and will be happy with that. Oh, and whatever assistants not named Johnson or Hartline or Day who get axed... I’m ok with that too.

Like I said in another thread, (Schiano I think) this is the worst buckeye defense I can remember. Bosa May have covered up some mistakes but he isn’t single handily fixing the back seven issues.

Tackling, along with filling gaps and pursuit angles are atrocious this year. I really don’t get where the creativity is at. On either side of the ball tbh.

I don’t think there will be any first team all conference defenders this year. I just don’t get it with all the “talent” the team boasts. How is this super staff with 2 former NFL coaches not getting more out of this roster?

Just my $.02 but the scheme is not sound and neither is the tackling and getting boat raced in the fourth quarter by FUCKING PURDUE screams for adjustments. Give Hilliard a look in the middle and Booker a look outside with Harrison. Maybe guys need to see more of the game from the sidelines to get more out of them on the field.

2013: "we're trying to be to cute, all these zone defenses. Just play press man so the athletes can play fast. Too much talent to play this bad. Coaches suck!"

2018: "we're too predictable with all this press man. Just play zone. Too much talent to play this bad. Coaches suck!"

Everything does indeed just repeat itself.

I think we'd be fine if our LBs played better. And firmly believe that falls on coaching at this point. The entire unit is lost 2nd year in a row with different guys.

I also think you can gameplan for certain players within the scheme. We started putting Ward on Penn State's TE last year to finish the game out. We gameplanned for Melvin Gordon, Amari Cooper, and Mariota in 2014. Why were there so many plays with LBs and S covering Moore ? That's just hubris and egotism.
Every play should have been Sheffield, Okudah, or Wade with Safety help.

Yeah. It's miserable worrying about 'NC or bust' every year to catch up with Bama. Makes it impossible to enjoy any games. Even if it's not the ultimate prize, I'll take last year's ending every chance I can.

Running one or the other exclusively is never the answer and, more often than not, a recipe for disaster. In 2013, the Buckeyes had Brad Roby, Doran Grant, and I believe Armani Reeves were the main Nickel Corners. Roby was capable of shutting anyone down, week to week. Grant and Reeves probably would’ve handled man coverage pretty smoothly. That being said, a mix of both man (I’m not a fan of press man exclusively at all) and zone is best to confuse the offenses.

When the offense knows the defense will ONLY run man or press man, they’ll make you pay with slants and passes underneath all day. Mixing in zone every now and then should create enough confusion to cause some turnovers, so long as the guys running their zones are in position and not selling the zone prior to the snap. I think Okudah could be a monster in zone looks with his speed, and I also think Wade playing opposite Fuller could be huge in a zone look. Would take some of the pressure off the back 7 as a whole, and possibly confuse the offense enough to force a pass rush here and there (which has been non existent since teams have figured out all they need to do is run slants).

Venabals has said he has over 30 variations of zones he deploys. Some are simple and just slightly different, but god dang it they are different. We play the same damn coverage 90% of the time. And WTF is this walking the LBs up in the damn LOS so much. Once in a blue moon on 3rd and long is one thing, but we do it too often in run situations and the LBs are Fucked before the snap. How can you play downhill when you have to step backwards first. Fuck that. How do you take on a blocker that out weighs you 70 lbs taking a fucking step back? Stupid shit.
