2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

Not sure what the fuck you do with LB and Safety play.

I would go to using Harrison, Browning, and Booker as our starters and at least get some speed on the field. Tuf Borland and Pete Werner just seem slow. I just don't think Borland is full recovered and has gotten his speed back. I know Werner is a converted safety but he hasn't shows his speed yet. I think it's a lack of instinct as a linebacker.

I still don't understand how Booker went from starter last year to barely playing this year. This group could use someone with experience.

We are so aggressive that we no longer play sound defense. We look like a Madden game. At one point we lined up with nobody in either A gap, no safety in the middle of the field, and then gave up a long TD right up the middle on an inside zone. Who comes up with that?!

Michigan will kill us on that shit. They'll put in 3 tight ends and create more gaps for our LBs to worry about filling. Then they'll run delayed tight end routes and use throwbacks all day. With the LBs playing so aggressive and are so far up field they won't see anyone releasing.

I dunno if it's Davis, or this is just Schiano without Fickell and Combs, but it's ridiculous. Our D-line is still damn good, let them worry about rushing the passer, play sound defense behind them. They'll probably get more pressure just from our linebackers being in position to contest the easy slants and drag routes.

And what happened to our tackling? Our tackling technique was impeccable in 2014 and 2015. Now it's just garbage.
Such an emphasis on pressure and aggression that soundness in tackling/assignments have taken a clear back seat.

Don't even get me started with our wide splits that leave our A gaps unprotected... Its what lead to one of the long runs vs Oregon State too. Yet we continue to run it is the bigger issue?

Our stubbornness to continue doing things that hurt us is amazing.

Pressure and aggression as strategies work when you have a Bosa, who is able to get in the backfield regularly and with speed. He's gone. By all means, dial it up when you need to but not as a SOP. And, for goodness sakes, stop leaving the bloody middle of the field uncovered.

I seem to remember a 2014 team that couldn’t stop a power running team all year and then stuffed Wisky and their 2k back...and played lights out against Oregon.

These forums always sound like everyone here only lived through the Cooper era.

That was a young defense, and team, that improved on a weekly basis, this defense is also young, but you're not seeing the kind of improvement, you've seen in 2014, in fact that '14 team was at that time criminally underrated by everyone until we got to the Bama game.

The defense gave up 37, 24, 27, and 28 the final games that year...the last three to Indiana, Minn, and a 5-7 tsun.

Well Urban's defense have mainly been bend but don't break kind of defenses, you get some you lose some, but I really believe that in ´14 you could see some improvement in players, Darron became a beast by the end of the year, Bosa was beasting from day 1, and others really stepped up their game Doran Grant, Tyvis Powell, but that's my opinion.

Dont have the skill to run the full on nan all the time - at least not at every position. Play man on the outside and run some zone blitz schemes underneath and confuse the offense a little. Take the coverage pressure off the linebackers all the damn time. DO SOMETHING!

Status Quo and hoping it will change is a piss poor strategy.

We are too predictable on D, nothing new, nothing fresh, same shit that you can build you scheme against and be 100% certain that it is going to be exactly like you planned it would be. Seriously, no fucking imagination.

2013: "we're trying to be to cute, all these zone defenses. Just play press man so the athletes can play fast. Too much talent to play this bad. Coaches suck!"

2018: "we're too predictable with all this press man. Just play zone. Too much talent to play this bad. Coaches suck!"

Everything does indeed just repeat itself.

Got to play to the talent man. If they can't do something, try another strategy. Surely they knew when we were getting drilled by OrSU that something wasnt quite right. And, it never got better. Just asking to mix it up on occasion to give them a shot to improve.
