2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

I say demote Schiano and let Grinch take over from here on out. Not sure what the fuck you do with LB and Safety play.

Can't see anyone demoting a guy like Schiano. Either he takes another job or gets flat out fired. I can't believe he's the one who's coming up with these terrible defensive schemes with the LBs. It's so goddamn easy for even moderate coaches to scheme against. I don't know if the players are just that unable to learn, or the coaches are so obsessed with playing man v man that they refuse to get out of their own way.

There are so many ways to run a talented defense that aren't complete shit, and somehow the coaches are beating the odds and taking potential and turning it into trash.

We are so aggressive that we no longer play sound defense. We look like a Madden game. At one point we lined up with nobody in either A gap, no safety in the middle of the field, and then gave up a long TD right up the middle on an inside zone. Who comes up with that?!

Michigan will kill us on that shit. They'll put in 3 tight ends and create more gaps for our LBs to worry about filling. Then they'll run delayed tight end routes and use throwbacks all day. With the LBs playing so aggressive and are so far up field they won't see anyone releasing.

I dunno if it's Davis, or this is just Schiano without Fickell and Combs, but it's ridiculous. Our D-line is still damn good, let them worry about rushing the passer, play sound defense behind them. They'll probably get more pressure just from our linebackers being in position to contest the easy slants and drag routes.

And what happened to our tackling? Our tackling technique was impeccable in 2014 and 2015. Now it's just garbage.

Yep. So damn worried about being aggressive and going man that it turns any mistake (and there are many) and magnifies it x10. They would have to have top tier execution and even better talent to make this system work, and they have neither.

Our secondary last year was questionable, this year exposed. It's hard to identify just how much from stats alone since LBs are allowing dink and dunks to turn into massive gains and throwing off the yards per completion. In years prior to this and the last one we ranked around 15th... this year #116 in YPC allowed and #80 in total passing yards allowed. This D is just so bad as entire unit it's the type of drastic thing you see when you a new DC comes in it, implements an entire different scheme that doesn't work and/or doesn't have the right players for it, and essentially makes a D 10X worse than it was. Unless Schiano drastically changed up the scheme (my memory isn't that good to recall how different it was from 16 and 17) it doesn't make sense. Either way I think he should be at least on the hot seat from this year since it's been trending in the wrong direction since he got here.

Honestly, the first half defense was great. A lot of my disappointment belongs in the Offense thread. D fell apart in the 2nd half some, then it really fell apart late when everyone was checked out (which is a problem), but that was after the offense refused to punch it in and set any tone all night- which they have to do this year. That said...

Credit to the CB’s. They played their assignments well. Okudah is a stud, Sheffield was great against a lot of attack- drew 2 OPI’s. Wade (as I expected) shadowed Moore and when given the opportunity did pretty well.

Safety play from Pryor was bad.

LB’s are awful and the scheme they’re in makes them even worse. Completely lost and I have no clue what they are trying to accomplish. Werner is still too light, Tuf is too slow and the rest do not react like they’ve ever been on a football field.

DLine was non existent and Chase is not exactly who we thought he was. This is a beat up position and we knew that going in.

Coaching- F+. There is a lot to say about the overall vanilla scheme that is getting torched by OC’s, but some particularly bad moments are Wade NOT shadowing Moore on a 3rd and 8(?), shading a LB (Harrison) on him, who proceeds to give up inside leverage and an easy slant. Baffling and it’s like these coaches are taking plays off. The other was the draw on 3rd down in the 4th Q. I have no clue how you aren’t prepared for that. Brohm had Schiano schooled all game. That hurts.

No energy, no big plays. They just sort of were out there. They need health and some life/“juice” on that side.

I predicted this and prayed I'd be wrong. This D just looks bad all around and it's quite surprising, since it's been a long time since the D was bad. It probably won't be the last loss this season and that team up North could pounce. Ugh... Hope things get better but it may take a couple years.
