2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

Indiana will go to a bowl game at seasons end. After Pryor entered the game Indiana scoed 6 points for the half. His play keeps improving and is now showing promise of solidifying the secondary. There is still a long way to go for this mostly young team. But jeebus! They are making things exciting in games against better teams. Also, I noted that even when Wint took another bad angle he ran down the runner and made a tackle.
Only reason he ran him down is the kid was like 230 and a slower back... if thats a speed back he's gone.

Couple of things...defense.
Borland has made plays the last 2 games and looks like he's moving much better.
Pryor looks like he's making progress and broke up a sure TD in the Indiana game. Made some nice tackles.
Very, maybe too, physical. Will still draw a lot of attention from the opposing offensive co-ordinators.
Those two will help solidify the defense and slow down the big plays.
Okudah is coming along and refining his skills. He looks like a safety. Wade looks better and more natural.
Arnett is hot and cold. I don't like him at corner. He might be a better safety.
Sheffield has some skills and is blazeing fast but he is still learning the position. Made a bad mistake on a touchdown in the second half Saturday. Or was he expecting inside help that never came? He let the receiver get inside him. Got beat bad.

Personal opinion, but I think we’re getting closer to narrowing down the defensive issues to a certain postion, and even more specific a positional battle- Wint and Pryor at Safety.

Not a knock on Wint but he was thrust into a spot he wasn’t ready for. Likely used to coming down and knocking high school kids out. Now it’s college and guys are running around that.

I think it’s instincts that may not improve but I’m not gonna throw the kid to the wolves. Hope he adapts, but until then Pryor and Fuller should give some stability.

Linebackers are questionable but I’m closer to give them the OK.

I see no need for Wint to be on the field at Safety unless the game is in hand. Arnette, Sheffield, Okudah, Fuller, Wade and Pryor would be my first 6 guys out there. I would even put Riep, who got a couple plays yesterday, in ahead of Wint.

I have been a staunch advocate for Reip at Safety since the day he committed. If things continue at this pace what do you have to lose by playing him? At the very least he’s two steps faster than Wint.

H&G, been rooting for Riep personally myself. To tie it back, he always looked like a Eugene Clifford that could make plays for the Bucks. Hope he works his way on to the field and takes over.

He was a LB in HS

Agree. Repeatedly in the first half of the Indiana game, IU threw over the top and Wint wasn't fast enough to get over to the receiver to break up the pass.

I'd like to see this and Pryor as the 5th DB. His struggles as a safety are much greater than in coverage. He is also much better equipped to stuff the run or disrupt a screen pass than Wade.

You didn't see Shaun take a bad angle, miss a tackle, and be a couple steps slow over the top against the pass?

I'm probably the biggest Shaun Wade fan there is outside of his family, but forcing him to be a safety is complete misuse. He's so much better in man coverage when he can use his length. Playing off man coverage for Shaun, who doesn't have the best hips, isn't putting him in the best position to succeed.

The real solution is for Josh Proctor to miraculously realize all of his potential in the next few weeks of his first few months as a Buckeye :)
