I don't understand why people are discounting Haskins running ability compared to the amount of YAC yardage he gives the receivers by timely and in stride throws. While his running ability is not good, (probably 4.9) it is serviceable. Sam Bradford had horrible running ability and led one of the most prolific offenses in college football history. Great QBs elevate the play of the athletes around them by getting passes to them consistently and in stride. Urban said he was the most advanced passing QB he's ever seen at the HS stage. He's already made a couple throws that half of the pros can't make. Honestly the QBs he's compared to but far less advanced in the mental aspect of the game are Tom Brady and Brett Farve. He's not mobile and has crazy arm strength, and while he shows a lack of touch on some throws, he's shown the ability to make unbelievable throws and literally no throw is out of the question. A great west coast QB stresses defenses to the max and in turn makes the running backs better too. Anyway, the OL recruiting is getting interesting.

He is a below average runner. The concern is what happens when things break down and Urban is tempted to go back to his beloved wildcat running attack. He did it with a below average option QB in Cardale (and please don't confuse scrambling ability with agility and quickness when the entire D is watching you on the option ).

You are absolutely right that you can win big with a QB like Haskins, assuming he cleans up the turnovers. We've yet to see Urban move beyond the qb run as the feature of the offense. He's tried a few times and never succeeded. Naturally there were weaknesses of Cardale and JT that limited that but it's still a concern.

I don’t think his running ability is even the main problem- he seems utterly uninterested in actually making the read on the read option play and it looks like he treats the play as a straight hand off 80% of the time... which is an issue when defenders are purposefully left unblocked.

I don’t know if it is an attitude thing, or a recognitiom thing, or an inexperience thing, but the problem is that he is not good at/not interested in making a good read on the play, combined with being a below average runner.

If Haskins is the starter, read option needs to go way down on the list of run plays the offense relies on- it can still be a part of the offense, but less often, and please, please, please not on critical 3rd down plays.

Pure speculation, but if it is an attitude thing, and Urban is hellbent on keeping read option as a bread and butter play, I could see Burrow (or even Martell) having a key advantage there.

Edit: the running ability is a main problem if we go back to just QB draws, obviously. I strongly hope that won’t be the case.

That boy, Haskins looked damn good out there today! I wouldn't worry at all if he was the QB1 next year. He had enough athleticism to move chains and pockets

He's almost a carbon copy of Cardale. Very solid athleticism to scramble. Mediocre lateral quickness. Arm talent for days. If he can be more consistent than Cardale was, the sky is the limit, including at the next level.

He's already more consistent than Cardale! Honestly I've never really been impressed with Cardale, a lot of his deep balls were more Devin smith making plays than they were great throws by him. Don't get me wrong he put them close so Devin could make plays but he honestly never really showed consistency as a QB. Haskins has been in a system in HS where he was used to slinging it all over the field in a west coast system, and you can tell the confidence and the advanced skills he's developed because he's able to go in the game comfortable with ice in the veins and make clutch throws. The windows he's able to put the ball in are unbelievable but he does have a tendency to let a couple throws get away from him every now and then (Mack PI and Victor back shoulder). He needs some work when running the read option because you can see he makes quite a few of the wrong reads. His running is serviceable but his arm really opens up the run game.
