2018 NCAA Basketball Tournament Discussion (Official Thread)

two great end-of-half calls from jay wright:

1. pulled (brunson?) at the end of the first half against kansas. nova was on defense. player only had one foul. but why invite risk of star player picking up his second? an early third at the start of the second half would change the game dynamic. most coaches would have kept the player in since he had only one foul.

2. going 2-for-1 at end of this half. sooooooo few coaches plan for that. in my opinion, getting the final shot is more important than bleeding the clock to find the "best" shot.

Totally agree with the 2 for 1. Makes no sense to limit your offensive possessions when you have a choice. College coaches are dumb sometimes.

Nova didn't play particularly well the first half, and they are up 9. If the game continues to go poorly for UM, they have a team feed on TNT which shows only UM fans in the crowd, and there have already been a couple shots of disappointed UM fans.

I'm watching the main feed but I'm hoping for the chance to flip over for a double helping of schadenfreude later.

from a pure math perspective, which the coaching ranks are grasping more and more, it makes little sense to go "conventional" by working the clock for the best shot possible.

a good-not-great college offense scores about 1.1 points per possession. that's a standard "work the clock" possession. let's say a "play fast but don't hurry" offense scores 0.75 points per possession. with 45 seconds to go, the so-called "work the clock" offense will result in 1.1 points on average. on other hand, two possessions of "play fast but don't hurry" offense will result in 1.5 points.

and perhaps more important than the point differential is the momentum. if possible, never let your opponent enter the half on a last-second positive note, especially when they're behind and/or the crowd is not yours.

May have been mentioned already, I didn't look back at the entire thread, but how does Spellman get out of Ohio? Did we even recruit him?

That dude plays like 2 feet above the rim, is explosive, is super athletic, can shoot, ect.....

His brother is going to Temple. Their parents both played at YSU. Go figure.
