2018-2019 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

I see Bob Hunter on Twitter criticizing people for claiming this OSU team overachieved when they finished 8th and were picked 8th by the media in the preseason. Well gee, Bob, maybe having only one of the 33 players that were at least Honorable Mention all-B1G might have a lot to do with it. These guys weren't the most talented players in the conference, but they achieved some things in spite of that. Maybe when the season is over it's OK to use the all available information to judge as opposed to relying solely on preseason expectations.

I'm guessing he also overlooked Kaleb's suspension which almost assuredly cost the Bucks one win, if not two (probably lose at Purdue regardless). Winning a first round tourney game as an 11 seed didn't hurt either - did the almighty media predict that, too?

Then again, I made the mistake of checking Facebook, where people want to fire Holtmann after last night. :roll1:

i think anyone who looked at this roster rationally before the season recognized the limits on talent. as i stated many times before, plenty of fans didn't give kbd, tate, and williams the credit they deserved and assumed that continuing success in the the top half of the conference would be more or less a given. and unless you're returning pretty much every key player, it's just so darn hard to predict a season.

the above is why i think any overall summation of this team and this season should key in on how the team progressed as the season went along. did we get better and did we stay cohesive? was the team still "buying in" in february and march? these are things not necessarily reflected by wins, losses, and conference position.

perhaps the biggest positive takeaway from this season is not that we made the tournament or won a game in the tournament. for me, by far the biggest positive takeaway is that during a rebuilding/transition season where there were multiple question marks in october, where great doubts formed in january, where everything felt uneasy from mid-january on, and where we faced a major test upon losing our star player for a stretch in march, the team remained bonded and focused. in my opinion, the season had little to do with record and much, much more to do with chemistry between the players as well as between the players and the staff. this season wasn't about the dog in the fight but instead the fight in the dog.

anyway, as far as records go, understand that we were 2 games out of 6th... but also 2 games out of 12th. this game is just too fickle to hinge success and failure on what often comes down to a possession or two over 35 games. take the 2006-07 squad, for example. great team and great season, right? well, just imagine if xavier's justin cage had made the second free throw. instead of a team that's known for a thrilling run to the title game, that osu team becomes an uber-talented punchline that choked in the second round.

this season? a couple bounces here, a couple shots there, and we finish ahead of only northwestern. i'd rather not declare this season a success or failure based on an indiana game where we trailed with under 2 go, trailed psu with under 2 to go, and depended on bucknell missing a last-second shot.

In my opinion, this team exceeded expectations. Early in the season, this team overachieved and it showed as the season moved along. Lacking size in the post, a true point guard, and consistent scoring options started to show itself and teams began to exploit that. Ultimately our freshmen started playing like freshmen. Some players immaturity started to show, Kaleb is one example (not a cheap shot just stating fact by his behavior on the court with the unnecessary fouls). Also and most importantly, just because you are a 4* recruit coming out of high school doesn't mean you are going to be world beater in college and it showed this year. Give these kids a year to work on their game and I think with at least two of them, we'll see their game go leaps and bounds.

My expectations aren't much higher next year until I see this team get some length and athleticism inside. The lack of a true PG has been addressed. Some additional size in the front court has been addressed but are they athletic enough and will they contribute? Most of us thought LeDee would play more and even with the lack of size, he played sparingly.

This year's team played well and have the foundation. The big question is, "How will the this year's freshmen grow from season 1 to the next?" It will also be interesting to see the growth of both Wessons and Young.

The Ohio State roster that departed the BOK Center on Sunday night featured eight scholarship players slated to return next season to be coached by Holtmann and assistants Terry Johnson, Ryan Pedon and Mike Schrage.

However, given the nature of life in college basketball, it’s unlikely there won’t be at least one or two changes before next year’s team opens the season at home against Cincinnati.

“I think you always experience some change across the board in your program in an offseason,” Holtmann said. “That’s expected now in college basketball, right? We anticipate that there will be some of that. What it looks like, I’m not sure and haven’t put a ton of thought into, but it’s an expectation now in college basketball.”

Pedon and Johnson both interviewed for the Butler job after Holtmann was hired at Ohio State, and Schrage is well-respected among coaching circles. Any or all of them could be future head coaches, possibly as soon as next season.

“We’ll see with our staff,” Holtmann said. “I have an incredible staff and I wouldn’t be surprised if someone does reach out to them.”

Currently constructed, Ohio State is slated to return 70.9 percent of its scoring, 79.6 percent of its rebounding, 70.9 percent of its minutes played and 57.3 percent of its assists.

Keeping in mind that I think we had a good season for the current players here goes.

These percents are ok as far as they go but keep in mind that they are only percents of a team that finished in the lower half of the B10. I think half of next years team could be supplanted by incoming talent. We had no one player on the team who was consistent the whole year. So for next year I have to ask 1. will we have a proven ball handler? 2. Will we have a center who can play the position? ( It isn't Kaleb if he can't stay in the game), and 3.
Will we have anyone who will be a continuously good scorer at the 2,3,or 4 position?
