2018-2019 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

It's simple. Promoting from within does not give us a better staff. Netti and Penn have not been out their recruiting 2020, 2021 guys. Schrage was. We lose his relationships. I'd rather we hire a guy (and maybe a guy with some real offensive coaching ability, I am not totally sold on Pedon on that front) who has already started building recruiting relationships with guys in the next couple cycles. Netti and Penn can start off as assistants at smaller schools, gain some recruiting and coaching experience, and maybe come back to OSU someday. But losing Schrage and immediately replacing him with someone like Scoonie or Netti... almost certainly a downgrade to our overall staff.

Yeah, hard to say who at this point considering how young Holtmann is in his career. Would not be surprised if Michael Lewis, former Nebraska assistant, gets a call considering their relationship at Butler. Lewis has had his name floated for HC jobs in the past year.

With all that said, Netti is the heavy favorite. Is your argument that we will have Netti on staff either way so why not hire for the more senior position? If so I do not think that creates a healthy workplace culture. If you think Netti is undeserving for merit reasons that would be logical, but how are you making evaluations of coaches who are behind the scenes?

Netti has no track record as a recruiter, that's how I am making evaluations. Could he turn out to be a good recruiter? Yes. Are the odds good that he will immediately bring comparable recruiting value to what Schrage brought? Very doubtful. Because Netti and Penn have not been assistants in recruiting capacities, they have not been building relationships with recruits in the next couple cycles. I think that's important, especially at this juncture for the program where we are still trying to rebuild this thing. If we were already rolling full steam ahead and could be recruiting off established recent success or whatever, it might be different. But because Holtmann is still very much in the thick of trying to bring the talent level of OSU back up and showing recruits multiple seasons in a row of real success at OSU, I think the smarter move would be to hire a good, established assistant who has already been recruiting these 2020 and 2021 guys. It's nothing against Netti or Penn, but I think it might be beneficial not just for OSU but for them if they start off in AC positions at smaller schools where they won't be expected to recruit, develop, or coach at an elite level yet... and then maybe someday they come back to OSU once they've built up their experience and skills and recruiting relationships.

Wait. 4 teams in the top 10 without Michigan State winning it all? Don't they know the ACC collectively just won the title last night?
