They are playing in the #1 league in college basketball, and have no one who is among the top players in the league. Did you say they got worse as the season progressed two games ago after they beat Iowa?
They just lost to the last place team by 18 points. Muhammad has had the biggest regression of any player I have ever seen. CJ has had an incredibly disappointing senior season. Woods got worse in the middle of the season. No one has gotten any better. LeDee and Jallow are just as much of nonfactors as they are as were when the season started. Andre will have a good game once in awhile but then do nothing. Young improved a little from last year but is basically a guy who gives Kaleb a breather. Kaleb is the one good player who evidently has no discipline. What exactly has been promising about this season?

The Iowa game was essentially Ahrens having a once in a lifetime performance which he hasn't gotten close to repeating

This is a mediocre team suffering through a plethora of injuries and a major suspension. As more talented teams have improved you have taken the middle out of a team that runs it's offense through the middle. It is what it is and while you can't give Holtman an award for his efforts it isn't time to change the thread title to "Everybody point and laugh at the OSU basketball program ".

BTN essentially summed it up nicely for me- Ohio State needs to beat 1 more team that is IN the tournament. They're currently only guaranteed an opportunity against Wisconsin Sunday.

If Kaleb is back Sunday the team has a chance. If he's out the next two games the Bucks will finish 18-14.

That may happen with him, but without him it's virtual certainty.

Yeah, it's weird, college basketball is so unpredictable and teams can be so up and down that I usually don't try to form too firm conclusions about what will happen, but this team looks so utterly hopeless without Kaleb factoring in, I just can't muster any sort of hope for another win as long as he is out.

There is absolutely no structure or dynamic to this team offense without him, and they don't have playmakers (though Duane could get there in a season or two). We wouldn't be able to beat a lot of mid-majors right now, we're not going to beat anyone in the B1G playing like this.

The B1G is very deep and very good top to bottom this year, but I have a hard time putting them ahead of a conference that has 3 teams in the top 5 and 2 more in the top 15.

To your second point though, we were just singing their praise 3 games ago after handling Iowa pretty convincingly, so they are in the position they are in bc they are so inconsistent. They don't have that reliable "go-to guy" they can count on each and every night to go get buckets and carry them. It's just not a very talented roster with a lot of obvious holes.

The one thing that has been consistent is their inability to score. It's been a struggle for much of the conference season.

Is it a respectable effort where a team that was predicted to be what Northwestern is record-wise right now still has some glimmer of hope at the NCAAs?

Holtmann won't get coach of the year or anything for this season, but you can't polish a turd either.
Except we weren't projected to be where Northwestern is. We were projected to be 8th in the B1G and it looks like the best case scenario is finishing tied for 8th with Illinois and Indiana. Illinois was projected to finish 13th but actually improved to the point where they are better than us, I know some people don't think it's possible for teams to improve but it happens with good coaching

We were 7th and coming off our best conference win of the season two games ago. The arrow was pointing upward.

I'm not sure why you're acting like Kaleb's suspension didn't happen or is somehow irrelevant. He's only the leading scorer and rebounder on a team that was good (not great) at best. Suddenly that makes Coach H a bad coach?

If we lost without Kaleb that's one thing. It's another to getting completely destroyed by Northwestern. The concerning thing to me is that every single player was notably better on the first game of the season against Cincinnati then they are now. Would anyone contest that?
