2018-2019 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

Gotta remember what Thad told CH after he asked for his blessing to become the coach - "if you take the job, get ready," as in, there needs to be yeoman's work done to get the program to the level Gene Smith and the fans want it to be at. Overall, it was clear that, at that time, recent recruiting classes were inadequate to keep OSU near the top of the B1G starting with this season. Holt dropped the ball a bit for this particular team by failing to land a strong PG with a brief window of opportunity. You could not have any missteps in rebuilding the roster if you were going to get this team to the tournament this season, and they just haven't added the kind of player that could bring this particular team to the next level. Thankfully, there are only a handful of games left before an influx of desperately needed talent.

This team plays hard and they play with grit and good effort, but they don't have any players who are among the best in the conference. No matter who is coaching, you need top talent to win big in the B1G. Even though these guys are on a collision course with the NIT, this team and coaching staff shouldn't be viewed as underachieving. They have just been thrown into the fire of a tough B1G with limited talent and a lot of youth.

With the win tonight that makes 7 in the Big 10. I think at 9-11 they go dancing. Do you guys see 2 more wins coming ?
let's say we beat northwestern at northwestern. the home games versus iowa and wisconsin will be massive. either game can be stolen. otherwise, i don't see us winning at maryland or purdue. beating nw and going 1-1 versus iowa and uw should put us in a decent spot on the bubble, especially if we win our first conference tournament game. the bubble is so weak this year and our conference is so strong that we should have the necessary wins for a bid.

and i don't care if we don't "deserve" a spot. "deserve" means nothing to me. the bubble is always full of teams with multiple question marks. everything is relative.

i said it elsewhere but if this team can find a way to get 3 more regular season wins, I will be more than happy for them to have earned that Tourney invite.

anything less than that, and I think it might be better for the young guys to learn the hard way that this is not nearly good enough.

I'd rather not be the team that lucks out just because the bubble sucks that bad. really want these guys to learn how much they need to step things up if they want to achieve the things they hope to achieve in the future.

i don't agree that this team would be in a better spot if they just tried harder. when i see muhammad miss shot after shot or jackson turn over the ball at a headache-inducing rate, i don't think they'd play better if they just stepped things up. i'm not even sure what that means.

Three wins is out of the question for this team. It will just depend if doing the bare minimum and beating NW is good enough to get in, or do we need one other win from either Iowa/Wisconsin. Will beating a weak team in the Big Ten Tournament be good enough? I don't know I haven't studied the bubble at all

my guess...

beating northwestern and northwestern alone means we'll end up with 4 (possibly 5) q1 wins but no great q1 wins. i wouldn't at all feel confident about a tournament bid.

winning 2 of our remaining games means we'll get at least 5 q1 wins. if those 2 wins don't include northwestern, i'll feel quite confident despite still nervously watching all the conference tournaments. if those 2 wins include northwestern, i think we'll be completely at the whim of the other conference tournaments unless we shock the dead and win at least 3 conference tournament games.

winning 3 of our remaining games means we're in like flynn and getting a 7/8/9 seed.

I understand why you're not sure what that means because I'm not sure how you got that out of what I was saying.

the first and foremost issue on this team is the inability to create and make shots. i'm not sure how "stepping things up" addresses our talent vacuum. perhaps i'd get your perspective if the root of our issues were planted in hunger and focus. i just don't think that's the case, though.

if our players have a winning attitude, i'm sure they'll use whatever happens over the next month to spur on their off-season work. if they miss out on the ncaa tournament, they'll work so that never happens again. if they make the tournament, they'll work so that they return. what i think will ultimately have the greatest impact, however, on off-season progress is the incoming talent breeding competition. iron sharpens iron.

speaking of happ in another thread, here are all of his games versus ohio state:

freshman: 12 points (6/11), 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 turnovers
sophomore: 6 points (3/10), 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 0 turnovers
sophomore: 4 points (2/5), 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 turnovers
junior: 7 points (2/6), 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 turnovers

average vs. osu: 7.3 points (41%), 7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.3 turnovers
career average: 15.3 points (55%), 8.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.5 turnovers

for whatever reason, osu has had happ's number regardless of the coaching staff and lineup. i say "for whatever reason," but i know a huge reason has been our execution of immediate double-teams with solid help defense. anyway, happ barely reaching double-digits only once in 4 tries is quite the feat for osu. i can't imagine that he has fared worse against any other opponent that he's played at least 3 times. let's hope we stifle him again in a couple weeks.
