2018-2019 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

OSU will be going to the NIT. And they won't win it.

Can still make NCAA tournament the bubble is bad I mean like real real bad but they really are going to need to at least get to 9 conf wins I think which means they are going to need to win at least 1 against the big 5 games left sweep Northwestern and win the other one.

Really crushing loss no doubt tonight with such a brutal schedule left.

This team with KBD would been something.

With KBD this team still would have been lucky to get to the second round of the NCAA's. That's where they got last year and they had Tate and Kam

after that loss, pretty much the least osu can do to receive a tournament bid is beat northwestern twice and go no worse than 2-3 versus msu, md, iowa, pu, and uw. fortunately, each of the latter 5 teams would make for notable wins.

according to the current net rankings, beating nw twice and going 2-3 otherwise would give us a 20-11 (9-11) record with 7 q1 wins, which is a lot. we'd be dancing even with a conference tournament loss.

the problem, though, is that we play like shit and will continue to play like shit until shit changes its molecular structure and no longer smells like shit.

I'm holding out hope to play a First Four in Dayton as an 11 seed. We might actually have a home crowd advantage there.
if we're fortunate enough to be a tournament team, i hope we don't play in dayton. i think we play better on the road. the "neutral" dayton site isn't far enough away for my liking. if we're lucky, we play in san jose or salt lake.

Make it an early start and maybe it’s ugly enough to win.

(I understand the team is not good, but making the tournament, practicing and preparing for a March Madness game/weekend mean a lot to me and I’d think the program. I want to make it.)

edit: above math is wrong. at 6-7, we have 7 regular seasons games left. beating nw x2 and going 2-3 otherwise is a guaranteed bid (at 10-10, not 9-11). beating nw x2 and going 1-4 otherwise would probably put us in, but it would depend on the other bubble teams. heck, i'd rather see us go 1-1 and 2-3 than 2-0 and 1-4.

Couple of things after the latest shit sandwich:

- Until Kaleb learns how to control himself on defense and stop committing dumb fouls, or putting himself in a position to have ticky-tack fouls called on him, he's not a good player. He can get hot offensively, and certainly has potential, but his defensive issues negate all of it. I've never seen a player foul with such reckless abandon.
- Woods is a bad basketball player. Like I said last week, I wasn't expecting a star, but somebody who is at least capable of helping out on offense semi-consistently and can provide something off the bench. Outside of the rare good-game, he has been an enormous liability. If he and Washington are "splitting" minutes, 66% should go to Washington, 33% to Woods. If not 75/25.
- We need consistent shooters. Badly.
- This really just isn't a very talented team. KWesson has All-Conference potential offensively, but has a lot of warts. Jackson is miscast in his role. AWesson is best as a role player. Jallow is a black hole on offense and should probably get 6-10 mpg at most if we had more bodies. Muhammed is probably our best player right now, but he's just a frosh and prone to doing "frosh things" that non-one-and-done freshmen often do. Washington has flashed potential, but counting on him heavily this year was always a risky proposition. I'm a little disappointed we haven't got more from Young so far, but there's still time.
- The good news; this should hopefully be the low-point of Holtmann's career here. He inherited a mess that did have some untapped talent. Slapped some band-aids on it and got the most out of KBD last year. This year he's still digging out of the mess with the loss of his best player from year one. Lot of talent coming in next year, and hopefully he keeps up the strong recruiting. All in all, this year is what a lot of people expected it to be. It's just been clouded by a hot start that has faded.
