2018-2019 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

Personally, of B1G teams I see people other than Katz rating above OSU, I do not expect Maryland, Purdue, PSU or Iowa to finish ahead of OSU this season. I would pick IU #1, then UW, then a cluster with MSU, Nebraska, OSU and UM. I expect all of those to be NCAA tournament teams. Northwestern is a wildcard team, could go either way. Everyone else I am pegging NIT or worse. So I think OSU being picked at 6 is reasonable but anything lower is probably at least a bit of a stretch.

One area OSU could see some improvement is perimeter D. They could not stop a guy like Tony Carr last year, but I think they may have some different options to shore that area up a bit. Depth of talent overall is a little better as well, which should help team defense.

I think I will wait for my eyeball test before doing any predicting of the Big Ten. I will say that I do not think that the pedsters will be that good this season without Carr. I think that Whisky will be pretty good along with MSU, ttun, and probably Nebraska and Maryland along with Indiana in no specific order. The last three are in no specific order.

That's a lot of faith you have in Holtmann there. After last season (and his whole resume, really) I can't say I blame you, but this season we don't really have any sort of talent or experience advantage over most of the rest of the B1G and I think the production/talent/experience void from KBD/Tate/Kam/Dakich (yes, even Dakich) is a slightly bigger hole than what most of the rest of the B1G is trying to replace (Purdue being the exception, they lost as much as we did). I do trust Holtmann and this staff to kind of maximize what they can get from this roster but for me, my expectation level is at a place where I'd be absolutely thrilled if we ended up 6th in the conference and made the Dance.

Sounds like CJ, Woods, and the Wesson Bros are our best players right now.

LeDee practicing almost exclusively in the post, as some of us figured might be the case. Despite his best-in-class physique, struggling a bit with the speed and physicality of the game at this level.

Doesn't sound like the talent level is real high this season. A lot may depend on how much this team can buy in on defense and what their chemistry on the court is like.

After about a half dozen practice/Spain trip reports and the stuff from media days, Jallow continues not to get any sort of positive mention. Some were hoping for big strides from him but it sounds like an injury-plagued off-season has really limited his ability to develop his game.

On the plus side it does sound like Young has improved and is starting to look more comfortable out there. Also, the practice report from Jardy praises Muhammad and Washington's defense, so it is increasingly sounding to me like our two main line-ups will be a forward-heavy line-up where the top 3 forwards are Young, Andre & Kaleb and a 3-guard line-up using CJ, Woods, and Muhammad or Washington.

I would rather go with the 3 guard lineup because I think we might be able to apply more defensive pressure with that type of lineup and hence maybe get some easier buckets. Kaleb is really going to have to contribute no matter what lineup we use. He is really our only proven score.

Well, and CJ Jackson.

Woods was a proven scorer at the ACC level but it's always hard to tell how that's gonna translate to a different program. Temple plays in a decent conference and Anthony Lee put up great numbers for them while doing very little as a Buckeye.

Nonetheless, given our extreme lack of experience and scoring, I do think Woods is gonna be one of our main guys.

He was the grad transfer PF we brought in for the 2014-2015 season, played with DRuss and them. Pretty highly sought-after xfer, average 13.6 and 8.6 a game for Temple during the 2013-2014 season. Ended up behind Amir when he got here (which may have been a questionable coaching decision but he didn't look great when he did get in, only ended up averaging 3.4 and 2.3). I will say that Lee was starting to come around and become a bit more of a factor but then he suffered a groin injury, which along with Loving's suspension managed to help derail our momentum for the last part of that season.
