Got some preseason magazines today. Lindy's picks OSU as 6th in the B1G and making the NCAA tourney. Athlon has them 8th and in the NIT. I feel like Athlon typically tends to err on the pessimistic side when it comes to OSU while Lindy's is more accurate.

I feel like projecting OSU to make the NIT is dicey. The prediction could be right, but I think it is clearly more likely that OSU makes the NCAA tourney. If CJ, Key, Luther and Kaleb stay healthy and able to play, I would be surprised if they miss. I think the reality is the talent overall at OSU is very similar to the best teams in the B1G, the only difference is teams like Nebraska, Purdue, and UW have a better star player.

We don't return much "in game" experience besides Kaleb and CJ... Andre and Potter were spot rotation guys, I love the talent we have but inexperience scares me

It's college basketball, my man, where almost nobody returns a lot of good, experienced players. Keyshawn Woods is a huge addition because he is a proven producer at the high major level, and really gives them 3 solid offensive options. Of course Luther will bring great effort and energy. I wouldn't be surprised if a guy like Duane Washington is able to come in and be productive as well. And you have a host of other players to help fill in the gaps. While I am not sure they will match last season's #5 seed, if they are able to keep their best players on the court, I would be surprised if they were not at least a 9 seed.

For me the most probable range for this team is squeaking into the Dance as a ceiling and barely missing the NIT as a floor.

It would be foolish to underestimate our coaches after last season, so I'm actually trying to account for that. But we return sooo little proven production at the 2-4, and none of our recruits project an instant impact except for maybe Luther's defense (though I do think Jaedon has good potential as a rebounder and Duane might have some games this season where he goes off).

Keyshawn Woods was a vital add, no doubt, because I think he can be a double digit scorer here like he was at Wake and that should help give us a semi-functional offense, but the down-side is that he is not the most versatile player and has never been a plus defender, rebounder, or distributor. We're probably gonna have to play him a lot, but minutes he plays will take minutes from guys who might improve our defense or rebounding.

That said, Holtmann and Johnson are very good defensive coaches and Luther is an automatic boost to our perimeter D, so I do think we will field a strong defensive team. Offense, on the other hand, will probably be more inconsistent; 1 or 2 guys being off their games is likely all it will take for us to struggle terribly on that end of the court. How well we do this coming season might depend a lot on our offense being hot when it matters most (plus a fair bit of luck).

Holtmann on coach's media day is kind of affirming this whole viewpoint for me. He sounds like he's expecting a pretty tough season.

I had thought that 4 of the probable starters would be CJ, Woods, Andre, and Kaleb. Based on some of Holtmann's comments, sounds like probably Jallow or Young will be the fifth starter.

This is the first I've heard of it, but OSU is offering now a "Scarlet & Gray Pass" for $99 that will get you into all 19 home OSU men's basketball games for the season -- that's a heck of a deal even if you only go to half of the games. Seats are variable and will be assigned shortly before game day, but you are guaranteed a seat and at least 4 of the games will be in the lower level.

They are also offering the same deal for $199 that also includes men's bball + baseball, women's bball, women's gymnastics, men's hockey, men's lacrosse, women's volleyball, and wrestling.

Those are both really tempting....

I have tempered expectations for this season...getting into the NCAA's would be a win. That said, Chris Holtmann is a big time coach, and though this team doesn't have a KBD, if Wesson can make a leap, and some of the youngsters can contribute, this team could surprise a lot of people. Muhammed and Kyle Young are the wildcards for me. If Young can develop into the player he looked like he could be in HS and Muhammed hits his potential early, they will be formidable.
