2017 tOSU Offense Discussion

Who thinks it's a coincidence that JT finished fifth in the heisman his frost year, played like a turd for two years, now suddenly is back in the heisman talk? Same with zone 6 and the oline "suddenly" becoming very good. Piss poor coaching, shidt scheme, and predictable play calling can make great players look like turds.

Tim Beck says, thanks for the love!

I hate to be that guy, but I'll be more confident in the offense once we establish some consistency against quality opponents/defenses. If we sustain drives and score points against the rest of our opposition, I'll start getting more excited.

That isn't to say this past week wasn't super encouraging.

Barrett really started to look confident throwing downfield though and I haven't seen that type of presence from him in quite some time.

Well even our production last game should not be common against elite defenses. Hopefully you don't expect 550 yards of offense and 40 points against every elite defense.

I'll say this though JT is at least going to get drafted now and given a shot. I'd love to see the Pats pick him up in the 4th round (i hope for as high as he can get but being realistic) and for JT to sit under Brady for 3-4 years

Too much read option. Teams have figured out you overplay the RB, make the "read" be QB keeper, then beat the hell out of the QB. The result is the QB ends up with more carries than anyone else - sound familiar?

Sometimes, you just have to line up, hand the ball to your best runner and impose your will on a defense. We don't seem to even try that anymore.

Completely agree. The option should be a complementary piece to the running game with screens and sweeps mixed in, the main attack should be handoffs. It's not like you can't be creative with handing the ball off. Two back sets and hybrids taking handoffs while flexing in and out of the backfield can be utilized. We have gone too much away from the run this year. Arguably our two best playmakers are RBs especially with Parris Campbell out, they need to be the focus of the offense.

Lots of learning for coaches and players watching that film. To me, the biggest failure was that of the coaches, who failed to settle down their team after that opening. Meyer should have called time out when that series of downs saw two OL go down. He should have called time out before that silly trick play. It was arrogance and panic. It happens to leaders of the best teams and companies. Learn from it and move on.

I'm serious they should have gamecast from ESPN running... this way they can see who has been it ignored.

No way is JK Dobbins ever supposed to not have more then 5 carries in one quarter let alone a game.

Also the coaches need to answer the questions. They play hot potato every time someone asks "why didn't JK get the ball?". Urban says ask Kevin and then Kevin says ask the running backs coach.

Just answer the question Urban is it your team or not? WHY do we do this in every big loss.

The mentality of the offensive playcalling has changed so much ever since Herman left. Herman set up plays with other plays. He had no problem running plays over and over till the defense stopped it then he would hit them with the counter punch to that play. It wasn't about taking what the defense gave him, which I think this coaching staff is all about. Its about forcing the defense to react and taking advantage of it.

We see it with how JT drops back and is asked to scan the field. It's hoping one of the 4-5 receivers will beat his guy and JT recognizes it and passes to him. Its hoping our talent wins out over theirs.

I would much rather see a clear plan of attack and using the scheme and playcalling to get guys into position to beat their man. Allow JT to use timing and anticipation to go with the receivers route running and athleticism to win matchups. Allow JT to look off receivers and just not scan the field from left to right.

Herman made his playcalling an art. He couldn't abandon the run because it was used to set up the pass and other run plays. Everything was down to timing and alignment.

Posted in another thread:

The play calling was just fine through the first half of the game, give or take.

Barrett threw his second INT in the two minute drill and they tightened up to start the second half and proceeded to put together three straight three-and-outs.

By then they were playing from behind and Barrett threw some more INTs for good measure when the play calling opened up again because they needed to score points quickly.

Gotta put blame on the OL as well, they were getting toasted and a lot of the killer drive ending holding calls were because they didn’t come to play.

This team was still exhausted from last weeks tough emotional win. It showed from the very start. But we are still in a position to win the Big! Sparty doesn't have much of a pass rush and will allow the offense to pick up big chunks of yardage in the pass game next week. Ped State had 400yards passing on them.
We will win next week!
