2017 tOSU Offense Discussion

Hadn't ever seen TE as HB and acting as fullback. Does he get a triple schollie or OT pay? Looks effective (is effective), as releasing after pause/block, and going to the open spot or dragging across line of scrimmage. Neither Burrow (verrrry limited duty) and Haskins showed the command required of an tOSU QB during Nebraska, but did against Rutgers. Meech did pretty well against Nebraska, thought Burrell was a slam dunk at RG, however. Shows what I know. Gotta love the way the WRs have stepped up their play, blocking and catching. JK doesn't get around the end w/o a WR block on the LB. Losing Jamarco, and Weber (?) to injuries will certainly hurt, and thanks to Coach Davis for turning the light on for the LBs. They flowed very naturally to the QB/ball, and filled gaps against the runs. It looks great to see this team grow in skill, teamwork, and doing their jobs. Hopefully the Oline will play well, going against the best Dline in the land has simply got to help them get better. Special teams is puzzling. The 'big legs' seem to be out to lunch, and now it's more of a head thing with them, I believe. Also, the B10 hype is wonderful, having so many teams crowding the top 10 is marvelous, although we know that the B10 will cannibalize itself in the second half of the season, here's to big bowls, and beating all comers. Go Bucks!

The Small Change That Brought the OSU Offense To Life

Binjimen-Victor-Nebraska-1170x780.jpg

Bench the quarterback! No, it’s the offensive line! Actually, the receivers are to blame! You’re all wrong – it’s just bad playcalling!

Everyone from Youngstown to Portsmouth had a theory about why Ohio State’s offense had been so lethargic in the Buckeyes’ 31-16 loss to Oklahoma.

At that point, the unit had looked somewhere between lethargic and non-existent for 4.5 of its previous five games stretching back to the previous November, and it wasn’t clear if an offseason overhaul of the coaching staff had improved things at all.

Since then, the Buckeyes have topped 500 yards of total offense in five consecutive games, the first time they’ve done that in school history. They have also scored more than 50 points in their last four games.

It’s certainly fair to point to the quality of competition; Army, UNLV, Rutgers, Maryland and Nebraska won’t be confused with Oklahoma, Michigan or Clemson any time soon.

However, the Buckeyes say the biggest change is that they’re keeping things simple.

“We’ve talked about just making sure guys aren’t thinking so much and just go play,” said senior center Billy Price. “Go play fast, put the ball down, snap the ball, let’s go. I think the biggest thing is just as soon as you start thinking and making sure, ‘I have to have this guy’ or ‘I have to have this guy’ or you’re trying to dissect things, that’s when players start to play slow. And that’s what our focus is: don’t play slow.”

Saw this from Bill Connelly over at SBNation today:
Oklahoma State’s offense is terrifying, but adjusting for opponent, the Cowboys currently only have the seventh-most explosive offense in the country. Using IsoPPP+ (an opponent-adjusted look at the magnitude of a team’s successful plays), here’s your top 10:

  1. Missouri
  2. Oklahoma
  3. Ole Miss
  4. Ohio State
  5. UCF
  6. Notre Dame
  7. Oklahoma State
  8. Miami
  9. Fresno State
  10. Texas Tech

Also some great stuff on J.T. Barrett in the piece.

I like using the TE in the backfield as a blocker..Vannett/Heuerman helped Zeke in 14. We have been using one TE ..would love to see some 2 TE sets now that Berry has emerged.
You just named two really good blockers. Berry's emergence has been big for the offense, giving them one pretty good blocker.

I'll be honest I thought Berry was going to be one of those players that played versus UNLV but went away for teams like Maryland or Nebraska. It's kind of funny though in that we hear about getting two backs on the field at the same time and then out of no where we go with two Tight Ends instead. What I love about this offense is they're becoming so difficult to game plan for because it's like we're putting a gun or a hammer in front of the opposing defenses and asking them how they want to die? We can kill defenses in many different ways right now and something tells me we haven't seen all of our personnel packages yet either as I do think the two back sets are coming.

Maybe a two TE and two RB formation? lol... god now that's a power set.

Only way I was going to be impressed with this past 5 week run was if we just toyed with teams and that's what we did. We hit teams deep (drew a bunch of PI calls too), continued crushing teams running the ball, got our screen game going, started attacking the middle of the field with the TE's, and started hitting those killer intermediate passes. As I said before, we started off shakey against Army even though we moved the ball well the throws were kind of poorly placed etc but then every game JT threw more aggressively and with more authority then the week prior. So impressed with the game plans from the past 5 weeks as they continuously built off the week prior until the point now where everything is available.

OHIO STATE CREDITS IMPROVED COMMUNICATION, COACHING FOR OFFENSIVE SURGE

86708_h.jpg

Ohio State’s offense has never had a more statistically productive stretch than it has had over the past five games.

Having never previously had five straight games with 500 or more total yards in school history, Ohio State has had more than 580 yards of total offense in each of its last five games. Ohio State has also scored more than 50 points in each of its last four games, matching a school record set by the 2014 national championship team for consecutive 50-point games.

Ohio State has posted those numbers all the while taking starting quarterback J.T. Barrett and many of its other offensive starters out of all five of those games early, forgoing the potential to likely put up even bigger numbers in order to give second-string quarterback Dwayne Haskins and other backups playing time.

Agreed, bring back the two TE set counter with a TE pulling, and run the shit out of it with Dobbins. That play was pure gold.

OSU Passing Game Already Has Record Number of Playmakers

Parris-Campbell.jpg

Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day were brought to Ohio State to fix a passing game that spent the past two years struggling at every turn.

In the offseason, receivers coach Zach Smith presciently told his players that the new passing game was going to fit them better than it ever had before.

Being provided with a fifth-year senior starting quarterback and a batch of Urban Meyer recruits at the skill positions gave Wilson and Day a head start. Despite slow beginnings, however, the offense has been on full blast since the third week of the season.

Meyer has said at every turn that we must keep these performances in perspective given the opponents that they came against, but when compared to what the Buckeyes have done in the past, things are clearly better.

The Ohio State offense came into this season with question marks at receiver and tight end and almost no statistical production returning at either position.

Growing pains were expected, and they happened. Over the last month or so, however, those pains led to an offensive growth spurt, and specifically in the big-play area.

The Buckeyes no longer have to fight and scrap for every yard because they are hitting big shots like never before. Ever.

After just seven weeks, Ohio State has done something with their passing game that has never happened previously.

A whopping 10 Buckeyes have caught passes of at least 30 yards this season, which is more than any other season in school history. Only twice before (2012, 2006) has an OSU team even had eight players with receptions of at least 30 yards.

OHIO STATE TIGHT ENDS STARTING TO EMERGE IN PASSING GAME BUT STILL WORKS IN PROGRESS

86743_h.jpg

When Kevin Wilson was hired before this season as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, one expectation was that the tight end position would play a bigger role in the passing game than in Ohio State's previous offenses with Urban Meyer as head coach.

Seven games into Wilson’s tenure, the Buckeyes are gradually starting to show signs of having a passing offense that uses the tight ends more frequently.

In the Buckeyes’ seventh game of the season against Nebraska, which Ohio State won 56-14, starting tight end Marcus Baugh caught three passes for 43 yards and a touchdown, while second-string tight end Rashod Berry caught two passes for 29 yards and a touchdown.

That marked only the second time in Meyer’s 74 games at Ohio State that two different tight ends have caught touchdown passes in a single game. Their combined 72 receiving yards was the most Ohio State had from the position in a single game since 2014.

Baugh, Berry and third-string tight end Luke Farrell have combined for 21 catches for 260 yards and four touchdowns this season, which has the Buckeyes well on their way to having a more productive season at the tight end position than last year, when Baugh and A.J. Alexander combined for just 28 catches for 296 yards and two touchdowns over 13 games.

I'm looking forward to the new wrinkles as well and like the idea of two TE's or two RB's in certain situations. But I hope that we don't get away from what has been working the past 5 weeks.
The great thing is those sets are change ups to our fast ball. I'd imagine we will see a bit this week, against scum state, and scum to give JT the extra time to throw. Plus establishing the run game against those teams I just listed is a MUST, and having heavy packages can help accomplish that when teams gear up to stop the run.
