2017 tOSU Offense Discussion

Obviously we're all waiting to see how they perform against PSU and then a top-notch OOC foe (hopefully in the playoffs), but it's obvious that they've improved leaps and bounds above where they started this season. JT is playing as well as he ever has and the WRs have gone from being a liability to being a good unit that provides multiple skill sets and threats to a defense.

As far as Dobbins/Zeke goes and how that could impact defenses come post season play; Zeke is a special talent obviously, but I don't think Dobbins is very far behind.

Buckeye Offense Hitting Its Stride

17-10-14-FB-0042-DH-1170x780.jpg

Another week, another record-breaking performance by Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett and the Buckeye offense.

Ohio State tied a school record in its 56-14 win by hitting 50 points for the fourth game in a row, and set a new OSU mark by topping 500 yards in total offense for the fifth consecutive game. It was the most points Nebraska has ever allowed at Memorial Stadium in a conference game. However, those numbers only hint at how dominating the Buckeye attack was.

OSU scored touchdowns on each of its first eight possessions and never punted. They averaged 5.9 yards per rush and 9.1 yards per pass attempt. It was as thorough a beatdown as the Buckeyes have dished out all season, and came against a Nebraska defense that came into the game well-regarded by a lot of advanced metrics.

This is going to sound stupid but I almost wish the Oline wasnt playing so well so we could see JT working it under a lot of pressure.

That is the biggest thing that is happening right now, he has all damn day to throw and its beautiful. PSU, Mich and Bama or another elite, probably wont afford that much time. The measuring stick is going to be how much he's improved when the rush is in his face.

The tough thing right now for teams is they can't afford to go one on one with us or we will eat them alive. However if they try to pressure with just 4 then we have all day to throw which is what we've been seeing lately.

I think we will see alot more run calls against the high caliber d-lines. Seems like we are right around 50/50 right now, but we've been using the blowouts to get passing reps.
See I'm not so sure about that to be honest. This production is where UFM has wanted our offense and the balance we are showing is making our run game that much more effective. I wouldn't be shocked to see the balanced approach continue until someone can take one of our components away.

Edited to say we're now #2 in offense and we are #1 in touchdowns scored with 43. Next closest? Alabama with 36

Oline played really well, i feel like that's what we've been missing most. We'll find out soon if they are legit.
This is an old argument that goes back to the Bollman days. Why is the OL underperforming? Coaching is easy to blame, but in reality, it's easy to make an OL operating in a predictable scheme look bad. I'm not sure the OL's the past couple years suffered from poor coaching/talent as much as being handicapped by predictable playcalling/scheming. That's changing now, and the OL suddenly looks a lot better.

Crazy, right? Was thinking about this during the NU game too.

Line has been providing JT with several seconds many times. I have to believe that would be different when the Bucks play top 10 opponents, but hopefully not.

On the flip side, it seems our run blocking has been hit or miss. I see several run plays for no gain or loss in backfield. Then other times when we hit a big one.

It ain't perfect, no. And I would expect it to regress a bit against better defenses, but it's much, much better than 2015-16. If the measuring stick is the 2013-14 slobs, it'll be tough to reach that. I'm convinced Ed Warriner is the best OL coach in the business, and Herman's playcalling was masterful at times those two years.

JT has gotten good at shaking guys after him off and making plays.
I was hoping to see that for years!

Haskins. My wife said today that you can bet we will have Haskins for just one year if he is the starter. That's probably a good bet.

Antonio Williams has made himself into a Big Ten running back. Runs with a low pad level and is our "power" back. Can catch the ball well also!

Berry as an H back leading running plays has looked very good.
