I think it's hugely telling that two coaches in two games have said that they know exactly how to beat Barrett. State Penn and michigan Lite know how, too, but have just been nice enough not to say it. There's definitely a book on him. JTB is a (the?) great leader, but he maxes out as a QB. He can be effective (2014) when allowed to run and when he has the support of a running game. His record against overmatched teams is incredible but against relative peers - not so much. None of this should be a surprise. We have to give him what he needs to be effective. I see us repeatedly go away from the run and then run around and throw the ball away. We, clearly, have to establish a punishing rushing attack before our passing game can be effective. Instead of just owning this and making it happen (because we have the horses to do it) we seem to want to prove the opposite, repeatedly to our detriment.

Not questioning this part but actually building upon it. SportsCenter had a graphic showing that against ranked/winning teams he was something like 8-1 in 2014 with a great QBR and TD/INT ratio but significantly worse in 2015 and 2016. Losing Zeke, Devin Smith, and Michael Thomas has been a huge kick in the nuts to the offense, when with the talent we have on board it should not be.
For JT to be effective, he needs three things:
1.) A solid running RB and OL to keep the defense from focusing solely on him.
2.) A genuine down-field threat to keep the safeties away from the box and keep the LBs back off the line.
3.) Not having to run the same damn 8-10 plays every possession.

I am calling Bullshit again on "blame Zone 6". They are ALLL in the fucking NFL. Look at Fultons analysis, watch as WRs get wide ass open to only not be seen, be missed entirely, thrown to behind them, or JT holds it too long and the d recovers. It is all right there, in slow motion to watch. JT does not let the ball go.
All it takes is 5 or 6 of these kinds of plays to kill drives on 3rd down conversions and you get your ass handed to you like we have. We get behind the chains because we either run on 1st down into a loaded box, or we throw unsuccessfully on 1st down. We seem to always get behind the chains and we cannot convert passes on 3rd down to sustain drives because JT cannot make the throws. Period.
And if these guys think Haskins is so far behind, then Lord help us if JT goes down because evidently no one has coached Haskins for the past year and a half and we will be destined to lose out for the remainder of the season. I am willing to make another testicle wager that our record would be the same if not better with Haskins or Burrow running the show from here on out.

If anyone cares to rewatch the game, not that any of us want to, the contrast between how fast Mayfield got the ball out of his hands versus how long Barrett was holding the ball was extreme.
The plays aren't that dissimilar. One is a swing pass off an RPO, and the other is a bubble screen off an RPO. one was executed much better, however. JT was in the mesh for so long he nearly took a sack.
Also, I would love to see more two back sets. The H has been in the slot nearly exclusively so far. Get that guy motioning into the backfield. And for the love of all that is good, snap the dang ball right as he gets there. Don't give the defense time to shift.

Agreed. I just don't think his QB upside was as high as anyone thought. The signs were there during the whole Cardale/JT back and forth and we should have seen it then, but maybe we didn't want to. Not really his fault. It's just something to work around. He had a great record and QBR when he was new. Defenses adjusted and he hasn't gotten better. Not on purpose, of course, and I'm not really blaming him. He's one of the greatest ever Buckeyes, BUT he's limited. Paradox? Yes. Reality? Also, yes.

People say the same thing up north regarding their backups. Yes, it can be worse.
Haskins is magnitudes worse as a runner.
Haskins is magnitudes worse at operating the offense, which is to be expected as 3rd string, redshirt frosh.
Haskins is not a consistent passer. His ceiling as a passer is much higher, but his floor is not.
JT Barrett, for all of his faults, rarely turns it over, and frequently negates negative plays with his vision and scrambles. There's a lot of room to go backwards.
Many people feel like this season is over and they'll live with the bumps. I get that, and I understand it. But there's a lot of room to go down from a probable 10-11 win season with Barrett.

Well in the last three games against ranked opponents, he has 4 picks and zero touchdown passes, so I'm REALLY hoping he doesn't (continue to) go backwards. If his trend continues, we're looking at four more losses.
JT isn't operating the offense very well at all right now. If he's "magnitudes" better than Haskins, we're in big trouble.

With zero improvement from JT and a proper scheme, I think they beat OU as is, or get pretty close. No improvement or replacements at WR. No improvement as a passer. That's why there's a lot of room to go backwards, and as a staff I think they know they're not far off from succeeding with the existing personnel.
I agree that the recent regression is troubling.
I also don't think this team can compete with Alabama as it stands now, and I'm concerned whether Urban can get out of the offense's way in time to rescue JT. I think that's some of where the backup infatuation comes from. A guy like Haskins might be able to be the flamethrower they need to elevate the passing game and make Alabama or Clemson pay downfield when they take away the running game. I think someone like Dwayne represents the extremes of what the offense could be.

My point was that he should not be betting on Burrows being as good "here on out" when Joe's currently hurt and thus unable to even play. Now, once he's healed and thus available to play, then that's a different story.
