2017 tOSU Offense Discussion

Not a lot of conversation so far on this. It's still amazing how little faith the staff had in the run game. And we have seen it before with Zeke in the loss to Sparty, the other loss to Sparty by Brax, etc. For all of Urbs great qualities he has flaws and the constant reliance on the QB run Is one of them. The benefits of the math are completely marganilized when you are so predictable. And I say Urban, not Beck/Warriner because, as we have often heard by Urb himself....it's his offense. Really hoping Wilson and Day completely have control. I suspect they will. As Urb has said, with Wilson it's different because unlike his predecessors, his resume is stacked.

I believe this conversation does exist in many of the game threads, and 2015 and 2016 offensive discussions.

Every coach has a comfort zone, a play they think their players can execute at a high percentage. Tressel had the power run game with the RB and Urban has the QB power. There's a reason, despite multiple OCs, that when the going gets tough, the QB runs get going.

Does Urban trust Kevin Wilson? I guess we'll find out.

To UFMs credit he admitted they only go power QB on a team when literally everything is failing. Only reason it's been failing so much over the past few years is now in Texas and Minnesota respectively.

At least as fans we now know if we abandon everything and start running JT 20+ times we should be concerned.

Just an observation and someone please tell me you dont notice this....

When I watch highlight videos I don't see a lot of JT... And to be honest I'm a little concerned about that. Most highlights have seemed to be defensive in nature but I'm not seeing a ton of JT in there either way (even when they show offense).

I have this concern that JT is the flawed QB we have struggled to watch the past two years, and not the coaching deprived stud we watched in 14'. This first game cant come soon enough because it will personally tell me a ton about what we can expect from JT and this team.

If JT still has troubles the first game then I'm not confident he will somehow come around. Not saying he needs to go 31-34 for 300 but at least a 17-25 for 250 yards and a few scores wouldn't hurt.

Just my .02:

I don't believe you normally see a huge jump from a known starters JR year to SR year so I don't expect it for Barrett. That said, we don't really need a huge jump. He needs to be more accurate and everything coming from camp, including quotes from Meyer himself says that is what is happening.

Going back to Urbans mantra about QB being a product of those around him, I think we see better OL play, better WR play and better offensive tempo/play calling. You get those things going and Barrett (or any other QB) will look better.

All in all I am optimistic. Talent, experience, depth, better coaching...it's all there.

True. To have an idea of what is possible, let's look at Troy Smith from 05 to 06.

Troy made some significant strides from 05 to 06 in his passing game.

1) The greatest improvement came in terms of TD / INT:
- 16 / 4 => 30 / 6.

2) He also improved, although more modestly, in:
- total yards: 2282 => 2542
- completion percentage: 62.9 => 65.3

3) Interestingly, his Y/A and overall rating actually dropped slightly (0.8).

Anyways, if Barrett can improve his passing this year in proportion with Troy, we should be very pleased indeed.

I'll admit I have been a little worried about that as well. The one thing that has reassured me is the fact that, from all accounts, JT has been by far the most impressive QB through Spring and through Fall. Given the talent of those he is competing against, that (to me at least) is reassuring.

On the other hand, it is certainly possible that JT is a camp stud who does not live up to those performances during actual games. His performance in the Spring Game, for example, didn't really jive with what we were hearing from camp.

I guess we will see in a few weeks.

While I think that would be typically true, I truly think coaching at that position is critical. Simply put, Beck was a terrible QB coach and even worse coordinator. JT was not put in the best position to succeed last year. We know he can be lights out and accurate, he did it under Herman his freshman year, but then regressed under Beck noticeably. I think we see a big jump from the offense in general with Wilson and I think Day will be a big improvement over Beck from everything I've read and heard. Hell, can't be any worse than Beck. Of course this is just all speculation and doesn't mean anything until we hit the field, but my confidence in the offensive staff is lightyears ahead of where it was heading into the season with Beck/Warriner running the offense.

I do think you could see a noticeable jump for him. I watched some of last season's games and even though the regression was clear, he still had some pretty clutch moments for us and I think the largest source of frustration for fans was knowing he wasn't playing to his potential. If he could just play to the level he did his freshman year before being injured, or slightly above, I think he's likely in the Heisman talk and we're sitting pretty. Jmo and I need to compare the stats from his freshman year with last year, it just seemed like he was much more accurate in his first year.

And, if he doesn't take that step up, then we'll see Coach Meyer's Plan B. I really hope Barrett gets better line support and nails it this year.
That's what I'm worried about... not that JT can't win games because he clearly can. I'm worried it will take a loss or two early to force a change if JT somehow is the QB we have seen from the past 2 seasons.

I think it's more likely he goes back to the 14 JT but if he's really not the QB that we hope is... are we going to make the move quick enough to ensure we don't lose

I will take another Boeckman vs Pryor like bet right now with anyone who wants to; There is no way in hell Meyer benches JT Barrett. None.

PM me with details for bets if you feel strongly to the contrary.

I didn't mention it because I think the odds of JT getting benched are astronomically low. However, you have to think that one of Burrow or Haskins would be pretty darn good should they be needed.

I hope you're right... unfortunately I'm a "prove it" kind of person so I won't be at ease until probably after week 2

And there is this. On paper we should be better, but you don't know until you actually see it. I am only saying I feel a hell of a lot more optimistic heading into this year with Wilson/Day than I did with Beck/Warriner.
