2017 tOSU Defense Discussion

Yeah, just the like the 2015 team was going to be the greatest OSU team ever assembled... Let's get through this year first before saying a statement like that.

As much as this game showed a dominant defense, I'm not ready to get so excited about a team that needs a loss to get motivated. I wish they would take care of business and play up to their potential (like this game) weekly. This score SHOULD'VE been the Iowa score. We can't have a two faced team if we expect to win an NC. I honestly don't know if the team played that good or if MSU was that bad after last week. Hate to be Debbie Downer, and I know wins make everyone forget about the losses, but that Iowa game is still in the back of my head. But congrats to the D

Can't disagree with anything you said. The biggest hurdle this program now faces is finding the consistency of play needed to contend at a championship level from week to week without major letdowns or blowouts. It sucks because I didn't think that lack of focus would be a critical weakness Meyer or of this team in particular. But it is.

Just not sure everyone needs to be reminded of something no one has forgotten. If anything, this win just highlighted the flaw of this team even more. It's just a lot more fun to talk about the beatdown against a team that ruined the 2013 and 2015 seasons. I still want answers from Urban as to why the same mistakes are being made in crucial games. I still want to know how a talented team with an all star coaching staff was beaten soundly at home and then embarrassed on the road. I still want Bill Davis gone. But that was all we talked about last week.

I hear you, and it is fun to talk about wins. But from reading posts, its almost like Iowa didn't happen and this win made us improve those deficiencies. That Iowa game that we may want to forget is what may keep us from a CFP berth. I never thought a Meyer coached team would lose motivation either, but that's what happened(it seems). I hope this team plays like yesterday for the rest of the season, because they've shown they're not only one of the best, but also have great depth. But work still needs to be done with DBs

With all LBers healthy, I think the best 3 LBs are Borland at MLB and Baker and Worley outside. We will be facing teams that are ground and pound type offenses(I'm not including Illinois because they honestly aren't much to consider) and that combination offer the best chance at stopping those types of teams

OHIO STATE HAVING CONVERSATIONS ABOUT POTENTIAL LINEUP CHANGES AT LINEBACKER

87892_h.jpg

Among the many reasons why Ohio State suffered a 55-24 loss to Iowa two games ago, one of the biggest reasons why was the poor play of the Buckeyes’ linebackers in that game.

Even Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, who felt his team’s linebackers had played "very solid" and "at times very good" leading up to that game, acknowledged last week that the linebackers’ performance in that game was a problem.

"They didn't play very well," Meyer said last week. "This past week was not good at all."

Considering the linebackers in question in that game were the Buckeyes’ regular starting trio of Jerome Baker, Dante Booker and Chris Worley, there was reason to be concerned that the Buckeyes’ linebackers would be even worse against Michigan State this past Saturday, when it became known just hours before kickoff that both Baker and Booker would miss the game due to injuries.

Yet despite being without two of their veteran players at the position, Ohio State’s linebackers played significantly better against the Spartans, as Ohio State’s defense stifled Michigan State’s offense – which seemingly should have, at least on paper, presented a tougher challenge than Iowa’s offense – en route to a 48-3 victory.

With Worley starting in place of Baker at weakside linebacker, Tuf Borland starting at Worley’s usual position of middle linebacker and Malik Harrison in place of Booker at strongside linebacker, Ohio State’s starting linebackers combined for 22 total tackles – including four tackles for loss and three sacks – and suffered none of the coverage issues that plagued the Buckeye linebackers in Iowa City and some of their other previous games this season.

Considering how well Ohio State’s linebackers played against Michigan State, and how poorly they played the week prior, should the Buckeyes make permanent changes to their linebacker lineup even when Baker and Booker are healthy?

Came on to pose the same thought: For all the early season worry of the secondary being the teams biggest worry it has been the LB's who have been the weakest unit on the team IMO. I had concerns coming into the year on the O Line but it has been fine, even after Knox stepped in. Pre season I was not super confident in the RB room because Mikey had the lingering injury and Dobbins hadn't Dobbinsed yet.

Really disappointing about the LBs though. I hope Urb makes the right call and goes with Borland in the middle with Baker and Worley. Mix it up coach. Sometimes that's what is needed. Oh, and run the damn ball. (with the RB's please)

I am in favor or Borland and Harrison seeing more time. I know this is not how UFM likes to opperate but my eyes don't lie, either.
There was a play in the sparty game that stood out on so many levels and it probably went unnoticed by a lot of people. It was a jet sweep to the right. Harrison engaged the edge blocker and pushes him back and set the edge. Borland flowed down the line and met the runner cutting back into hole for a 2 yard gain. Nothing spectacular about the play until you diagnose how Booker and Baker have played that exact play. Booker would dart inside to try to make the tackle and would be easily blocked in that direction by the TE or WR on that edge. Baker instead of flowing and meeting would take the poor angle and cross the line and not catch the runner. This play went for 15+ yards at least twice against Iowa.
I agree with the poster above...LB has been the weak link this year.

No shit I saw that too... what sold me was sold me was on a cutback by Scott there was Borland sitting waiting.

Some people have it and some people don't. Borland has it I know... I want to see more of Harrison.

Jerome needs another year in college tho because he's not even close to ready

Paralysis by Analysis. With Tuf iin the middle, the LBs just attack and ball out. With Worley there, too much thinking and indecisiveness. Instincts can't be taught just harnessed and promoted. Keep the lineup and add some Hilliard to the rotation with Booker and Baker.
