Game Thread 2017 Cotton Bowl: OSU vs. USC - 12/29/17 @ 8:30 ET (ESPN)

Yeah I don't understand. Its the most "prestigious" bowl outside of the CFP and its still not considered a NY6 bowl?

How about moving the 2nd rate Citrus bowl to Dec 29th?

It IS a NY6 bowl though. The dates have nothing to do with their status. Peach, Cotton, Fiesta, Rose, Orange, and Sugar. The only NY6 outside of the semis on NYD is the Peach Bowl, and that's because the Rose and Sugar bowls are locked into a 1/1 or 1/2 5PM and 8:45 kicks respectively.

Cotton and peach weaseled their way into being New Years 6 bowls. Fiesta, sugar, rose and orange are historically the top bowls, but we needed 6 so there we go. A traditionalist will say WTf. Future generations will see cotton as great.

Hmm, I was wondering. Playing on December 29th just has the feel of a serious letdown on the traditionalist side of things. Maybe I am just missing the history or the recent trend by being 29 years old on the prestige issue, but it has always been disappointing if we are not in a New Year's bowl game. And I definitely don't feel that is entitlement...I was so excited to play Notre Dame in the Fiesta two years ago, Oregon in the Rose Bowl in 2010, Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl in 2011, etc. And in all of those games we had no chance to win it all.

I just hear Cotton Bowl and expect two unranked teams with 3-4 losses, not two conference champions that narrowly missed the playoffs. To me, this has the excitement of a 2001 matchup against South Carolina in the Outback Bowl rather than any of those games. But then again, that is why we have been spoiled recently and perspective is important. It is a fun matchup at least and maybe I can afford to go to this one. Get the younger guys some playing time and send the seniors off with a team that we historically die to beat. That's fine.

Also, felt it necessary after that diatribe to point out this is not directed at you at all, just my general thoughts

Well first off thanks to all you youngsters for your discussion regarding the historical irrelevance of the Cotton Bowl. I now feel like the old fart I am for having to say that.....

Actually the Cotton Bowl was from it's inception one of the 4 "Major" New Years Day bowls historically (along with the Rose, Orange and Sugar). It tied in the Southwest Conference Champion (Yes that was a thing too). It often had National Title implications when the Southwest Conference Champion (in particular when Texas) was highly ranked. Its relative demise as compared to other bowls coincided with the break up of the Southwest Conference. That break up left the Cotton to tie in the runner up of the newly constituted Big 12 conference leading to all those forgettable games you young whipper snappers remember (shit, you guys are likely to not understand that sarcastic reference as well)

Joe Montana's legendary performance comes to mind.
