2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

i'm sure it's already been said, but i think the committee's decision of bama vs. osu will be rather easy, provided, of course, a buckeye win over the badgers. the conferences determined that when two or more teams are deemed comparable enough to be more or less the same, then the committee should weigh the teams based on four primary factors:

1. head-to-head (n/a; push)
2. strength of schedule (after wisconsin, osu should have the edge; let's say push anyway)
3. common opponents (n/a; push)
4. conference championships (edge: osu)

if dinich is correct that teams 5 through 8 are very close, then osu will be selected ultimately based on its conference championship. i won't cry or complain if bama is selected instead, though. a 31-point loss to iowa hamstrings any grievances we'll have.

I stupidly entered Twitter last night (I've sunk so low...). However, one guy who's a fan of neither team pointed this out after voting for tOSU in some bullshit poll.

"Do you really want to see these games... Auburn/GA, Auburn/Bama, Auburn/GA, Auburn/Bama?!"

Also:

"Auburn/Clemson or Bama/Clemson (for the 3rd time)"

I know we've already played OU, but come on. Put Bama in and OU is the only team that wouldn't have a possible rematch. SMH.

1. head-to-head (bama and osu haven't played each other; push)
2. strength of schedule (after wisconsin, osu should have the edge; let's say push anyway)
3. common opponents (n/a; push)
4. conference championships (edge: osu)

5. tv ratings (edge/big edge: osu) With either Auburn/Georgia/Clemson/Miami in the final four no need for another southern team to captivate the national audience. The last thing the committee wants is a southern circle jerk!
'bama fans will still watch hoping the Buckeyes/Auburn/Georgia get clocked and the force is strong re: nationwide Buckeye hatred.

Buckeyes = ratings as it's basically that simple ...

they're 3rd already so there's no way they drop 1 spot and stay above conference champion TCU. So only way OU stays in the playoffs if they lose is if TCU is 3rd and OU is 4th, and we all know TCU isn't climbing 7 spots with a win.

"Spots 5-8 are really close"... not "spots 5-11 are really close"

With Fresno they just beat Boise last week and will have to do it again this week. It's hard to beat a team twice in a year let alone in two weeks. Once again I like Boise to avenge their loss.

I was mostly just kidding about Mayfield. I'd love see that jerk lose in the game that truly mattered.

I looked it up on Google Maps and Clemson is about a 5 hour drive from Tuscaloosa. Not to mention, two teams from the same state! Who've already played-- A WEEK AGO!

If I take off my Buckeye glasses...

This team was pushed all over the field by Oklahoma - at home - in a game more lopsided than the score indicates.
They were outplayed by a five-loss Iowa team, and lost by more than 4 touchdowns.
They needed an unbelievable 4th quarter to get by Penn State.
Michigan was within a field goal of the lead until late in the 4th quarter.

If I accept all the accolades bestowed on the team's personnel, not one of the teams they played had more talent, only two - Penn State and Oklahoma - had comparable talent, only one, Oklahoma, had comparable depth.

Maybe a CCG victory earns a spot in the playoffs, but I won't shed tears if it doesn't happen, especially if it results in a bowl game against Body Count and the Irish, or USC someplace not named Los Angeles.

Just saw the schedule. Pretty disappointed in the timing of these games. Two huge Championships on at the same time? And I know the Fresno St/Boise Game isn't very important to ppl but I don't want to flip back and forth. They've put lots of games on Thursday, why not that one? Should spread them out as much as possible...

Agreed. I don't know the ins and outs of the NY6 Bowls, but I'd love to see OSU v Miami. Wrap that turnover chain around their necks and choke the living shit out of em. 15 years later.

Nobody on the committee who decides will be wearing Buckeye glasses. Having already said a couple times the Buckeyes probably don't deserve to make it and also sayin' don't be surprised if everything falls in favor of the Buckeyes they still get left out, I'm fine w/the committee's decision, yea or nay.

But when it comes down to 'bama/Buckeyes, I'll take the Buckeyes up and down year notwithstanding. And yes, the Buckeyes have the talent to win every game. The Iowa game will remain a conundrum/mystery/enigma 'til the end of time.

More good news for us...apparently Hocutt talked to Heather Dinich after the show.

Heather Dinich ESPN Senior Writer

I asked Kirby Hocutt how big the gap is between No. 5 Alabama and No. 8 Ohio State. He said, "Reflecting on the discussions over the last two days, obviously there's three spots that separate them right there, but it's close separation from team No. 5, Alabama; 6, Georgia; 7, Miami; 8, Ohio State. Those teams are close. Very little separation in the committee's eyes between teams 5 through 8."

Heather Dinich ESPN Senior Writer

Typically, the selection committee chair doesn't give much insight into what the group might do, as they don't like to "project," but Kirby Hocutt offered some insight as to what winning the Big Ten could mean to Ohio State. "Well, obviously it would be an impressive win that Ohio State would add to their body of work," Hocutt said. "It would also be an important designation to have on their resume when comparing them to any comparable team. That being said, that's probably as far as I would feel comfortable going in just trying to speculate what may or may not happen this coming weekend. But obviously a conference championship being added to the resume is important when being compared to comparable teams."

1975 the Buckeyes beat UCLA badly game 4, but lost the rematch in the Rose Bowl.

Overall they won the total point margin so they still shoulda won the NC. Bad analogy?

Apologies to old-timers re: bad memories ...
Arguably they should have, but it is definitely true that late season losses mattered a lot more than early season losses in the poll system of 1975 (or the BCS system, for that matter). I don't think we know the extent to which late losses matter more than early losses in the current system, but I think we know that the difference in importance between late/early losses is less than it used to be; maybe much less. That is why, for example, they don't come out with playoff rankings until much of the season has been completed, and why (as I understand it) they redo the rankings from scratch each weak, rather than adjust the previous week's rankings based on the latest results, as they used to do.

I have a hard time mustering up any bile against Miami. Its a boom or bust program. They don't recruit that much outside of the state. But Notre Dame and USC are the darlings of the media. USC only needs to poach an occassional midwest kid, but they can pluck a five-star with the glamor and glitz that Columbus can't hold a candle to.

Notre Dame manages to play the private school card superbly. "We're in the ACC, but just when it helps us." "We've got our own network." "How dare you suggest we should ahare." And then there are the Heisman awards - Paul Hornung, and national championships - 1966. They recruit heavily in the midwest and nationally. They have one foot in the door at Catholic high schools. Ohio State can't ignore their presence because it is one program that can go from zero visibility to maximum exposure in a flash. I shudder to think of what they'd look like if Urban had gone to South Bend instead of Columbus.
