2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

Read my post above.

5 of the other conference title games are rematches......and those conferences all have division play. Division play doesn't even remotely automatically = no rematch games in the conference title game.

Why should OU get a free pass because they have to play a rematch? Why wouldnt Auburn get the same luxury considering they already threw the smackdown on UGA a few weeks ago? It's just poor logic......that I doubt the committee would employ

In a situation like this I believe the conference title outweighs the other aspects.
I did read your post above. I assume you read mine, and therefore you already know that I am not basing this rationale only on it being a rematch, but also on the facts that, if TCU wins, it will result in equal overall records and head-to-head records between the two. Is there another conference in which this is true?

No, I'm offering the opinion that the BigXII championship game specifically should not have a weight substantially beyond a "regular" game, in the scenario where it equalizes the record and head-to-head between the two teams. The BigXII championship game is somewhat unique here, because it is always a rematch and because the two opponents have always played the same conference schedule. Aside from that, your Auburn example is not the same, because it does not equalize the overall record between the teams. If Auburn loses, they have 3 losses to UGa's one loss. That is a significant difference.

So, I am not saying conference championship games don't, or shouldn't, matter. I'm saying they are not all the same and that sometimes, particularly in the BigXII, it is reasonable to treat them substantially like a regular-season conference game.

I think it sets a pretty dangerous precedent and gives some serious advantage to the Big 12 if that's how the committee thinks.......Basically they would be saying the game never mattered in the first place and it's ok that OU lost because they already beat TCU earlier in the season.

So basically in further years the #1 team in the Big 12 just has to make sure they beat the other team they face in the CCG in the regular season. Then it doesn't matter if they win or lose the conference title game. As long as they have equal records to said other team.

I don't think you give special consideration to the Big 12 because of how the Big 12 themselves decided to work their title game format.........

even if that team has absolutely no good wins and scheduled a FCS team.. It all just depends what they decide they want to look at really.
I wasn't making the comparison between us and Alabama, but rather us and any other 2-loss team.

I do think Alabama would get the nod over us simply because of the way we lost to Iowa, because I think the way we lost negates any slack otherwise given to us for having one more loss than Bama. Had we played both Oklahoma and Iowa closer than we did, then I'd agree we could very well get the nod over a one-loss Bama that has only one win over a top-25 opponent and also played a mediocre FCS team.

1975 the Buckeyes beat UCLA badly game 4, but lost the rematch in the Rose Bowl.

Overall they won the total point margin so they still shoulda won the NC. Bad analogy?

Apologies to old-timers re: bad memories ...

Man, the ESPN-ness of this situation has us up in arms with this mess. I vote we just kick the living hell out of Bucky and bring the Big Ten trophy back to Columbus.

Yeah, yeah, I know... “fight me, bro!”

The funniest part of all of this is how Bama fans and SEC homer nation are going to be huge Ohio State fans this weekend.

Wisconsin winning kills the dream of "GAWD DANG SEC DOMINANCE!" and 2 teams in the playoff.

I totally forgot this but GS is on the committee. I have no idea how I forgot that, but that has to be advantage for us.

I believe they said a few weeks ago that whenever a team is discussed where a coach or AD has or has had some involvement, they are omitted from the conversation bc of potential bias. I don't believe GS will be able to do much lobbying for tOSU. I don't know how that works bc he obviously has to be included in the final say of where teams should be seeded.

That was the first bowl game I ever watched. It still stings.
The 1st bowl game I remember, not sure I watched it, was the 1965 Cotton Bowl Arkansas 10 - Nebraska 7. Arkansas' only NC. Years later learned Jerry Jones, Jimmie Johnson and Barry Switzer were on the roster.

IIRC the 1st bowl game I watched start to finish was '69 Rose Bowl.

I digress ...

Thinking about this, it may seem crazy but this could hurt Ohio State’s chances. What’s the perception going to be if they put the Bucks in at #4 with Gene sitting right outside the door? If they do put them in, there will be plenty of talking heads calling for Gene to be out due to his influence.

They may want to avoid the backlash altogether and set a precedent.

We could do this all night.
