As much as I hate to admit it, basketball is probably the most difficult sport to officiate because it moves at such a fast pace and it is very difficult for officials to always have the best angle on a play. Also, basketball officiating might be the most objective officiating of all the sports. It is not really cut and dry like other sports and there are quite a few bang bang plays that could go either way. I am not saying that I agree with the way basketball games are officiated because I certainly am not happy when a call goes against the team (Ohio State) that I want to win.
Holtmann was asked on his radio show if he thought a fourth official might be needed in basketball but while he probably thought so, I think his response of it would probably be too much, or something to that extent, was accurate.
Given the volume of fouls called in basketball fans can always find calls to complain about, it's just the nature of the game. Message boards have fans who are convinced the refs are out to screw their team, it's just the nature of the internet. You could put 10 refs out there and those things would still happen.
My biggest gripes are inconsistency and indecision. I hate touch fouls, but if you're going to call them then do it for 40 minutes or don't call them at all (preferred). As for the last 2 minutes or so of close games, it's mind-numbing. While officials don't have the authority to change archaic rules that encourage intentional fouls (that are rarely, if ever, called as intentional yet everyone watching knows better), they can make a damn decision. Stop running to the monitors to spend 2-3 minutes reviewing calls similar to ones made a dozen or so times during the previous 38 minutes without hesitation or interruption. Make a decision and keep the game moving (without giving free time outs to teams who don't have any).
