2017-2018 Ohio State Men's Basketball (24-7, 15-3, #2 Seed in B1G Tourney)

Pic from the other day. Funderburk doesn't look too overwhelmingly suspended...only Young wasn't there of the scholarship players.

i guess beverly was concerned about his future given that holt has been pursuing ayala and that holt was spitballing tate at point guard. throw in the stated need for more than one guard (point or otherwise) in the '18 class, and beverly likely saw the writing on the wall. better to cut ties now than sit and stew. my guess is holt & co. didn't plead for him to stay.

as far as funderburk, well... that sucks. we have zero post depth this season, which is pretty much a write-off anyway.

can't at all see how the '18 class stats at four...

in the long run this might be good for the program but in the short term it hurts. we now have a total of 2 guards. 2! only one that can remotely play PG. as of right now, I guess Jae'Sean Tate is our back-up PG. so, uh, let's be praying that we get Eric Ayala for 2017 because right now we have ZERO guard reserves, lol. a couple injuries and we won't even have guard play on the team!

we also now have nothing that resembles a third-string or emergency center. I don't think the situation is desperate enough that you reach real hard on a multi-year player, like a HS or JUCO big, but maybe there is some grad transfer big body out there that we can have come in just to be like, a big body that we hopefully don't have to play more than a couple minutes per game. MAYBE you can play KBD, Tate, or Young a little in the post, if you absolutely have to. Young might be the best option of those three, he can mix it up inside and is pretty strong, while having 3 inches on Tate.

on the plus side, we now have more scholarship and an even MORE wide open roster situation to offer guards and bigs.

"My team is on the floor."---Coach Norman Dale

Funny, I was thinking the same exact thing when I saw the news. I was thinking that Coach Holtmann must be a fan of "Hoosiers."

"Have fun, Coach, trying to win with five...well, make that 4 1/2 players." - Hoosiers (1986)

If this gets the Buckeyes closer to the long-term goal, I'm all for it. If they weren't up to the standard Holtmann wants, then Holtmann should make changes.

The thing is... will any of them really have made an impact? Maybe Lyle but that's about it.

We need better talent is what this tells me

AFTER DEPARTURES OF BRAXTON BEVERLY AND DEREK FUNDERBURK, OHIO STATE'S ROSTER IS AWFULLY THIN FOR 2017–18

Ohio State basketball took another hit Friday night with the announcement of Derek Funderburk's dismissal and Braxton Beverly's transfer.

With the two players no longer in the fold, the Buckeyes now have just eight recruited scholarship players on their roster for the 2017–18 season. It's far from an ideal situation for Chris Holtmann in his first year as head coach.

In a recent meeting with reporters, Holtmann said he was unsure if Ohio State would add another player to its roster this late in the process. That was before the announcement of Beverly and Funderburk's departure, however.

"We certainly don't want to compromise on them being what we feel like are Ohio State guys, and we don't want to compromise on talent or ability," Holtmann said then, via cleveland.com. "That handicaps you in the future. Because of that, I don't know that we'll add another one."
