2016 tOSU Really Basic Defense Discussion

Yep...they had given up five red-zone rushing TDs all season going into The Game and we put five on them...
Bottom line is scum for the most part has not played a ton of teams early that are any good. Certainly Bama, and Utah are the exception and look how those games turned out.

They play absolutely no one all year until the end and always are in shock the first time they face a truly great offense.

And IIRC, during the game we equaled the number of rushing TDs in the Red Zone they gave up all year. Playing butter soft schedules like they have can hide a lot of problems... in stats and frankly, from coaching.

I think the biggest factor will be whether the UFM offense has specific plays that work well against the 2016 tSUN schemes and blitzes and whether JT will get rattled making the reads.

We will know a lot more after Oklahoma but if you told me pre season that they could hold BGSU and Tulsa offenses to a FG each I would have never believed you.
Not in a million years would I have believed it. Not with a team this young. Hell I would have been ecstatic if you told me we'd give up 20 points the first two games on defense. I think what's also exciting is that the defense isn't giving up a lot of yards at all.

Rewatched the first couple of drives from @BUCKDUBBS007 Youtube channel (It's Woody's work you do sir. Woodys work)

Some initial observations about the defense;
  • As we had been hearing all camp, the young interior DL are light in the seat and don't stand up all that well to the double team.
  • Dremont Jones seems the most moveable right now
  • Nick Bosa came in on the 4th down goal line play and blew it up
    • He lined up head upon the Tulsa LT and just blew shit up. He gets off the ball faster and harder than anyone else up and down the entire LOS
    • The testaments to his strength are obviously not just hyperbole. When other large moving bodies run into Nick, they stop.
  • If we had landed Dexter Lawrence to go with Nick Bosa there would be no weakness in this defense.
  • The athleticism of the back 7 just jumps off the screen at you and it has nothing to do with the opponent.
  • As it stands right now, imo, a very physical OL and run game could hurt this defense.
  • If a team gets behind and has to pass a lot or is a pass first team by design, this defense is going to be a huge problem for them.
So all in all it looks like the type of defense built (almost) to specs for an Urban Meyer team. It is designed to play with a lead and create turnovers. Ideally you have the monster(s) in the middle to firm up against a determined running opponent but that isn't there right now. The interior DL don't look terrible, they just don't look great.

I agree with a lot of that Jax. The Wisconsin game is looking the most daunting right now.

However, I really liked what I saw from Landers. He's got a little Michael Bennett to him. Dre'mont looks like a SSDE doing his best to fill in at DT. I'd prefer to only see him at DT for the rushmen package. Otherwise, Hill, Landers, and Hamilton should be getting the majority of the DT snaps.

I also get the nagging feeling that Erick Smith is a better option than Webb at safety. He seems to provide more physicality and instincts to the position. I'd rather see Webb at nickle.

Who was the last team to straight up beat OSU by just running the ball? Feels like we worry about our run defense every year yet teams are never able to make the Buckeyes pay for it.
